The weekend had flown by in a blur, leaving me feeling like I barely blinked before Monday morning already rolled around.
The classroom buzzed with early morning chatter, sunlight streaming through the windows and casting golden streaks across the wooden desks.
I sat down on my seat next to the window in the last row, my bag dropping onto the floor with a soft thud. Yoimiya and Thoma were already there, sitting at the desks in front of me.
Yoimiya had her head leaning against her hand, looking like she'd rather be anywhere else. "It's too early for this." she groaned, turning around to look at me. "I swear, the weekend went by way too fast. How are we supposed to recover from the festival hype and go back to this?" she sighed.
"Tell me about it." I replied, pulling out my books. "Feels like it's still Saturday."
Before someone else could reply, Itto strolled into the classroom, as energetic as ever. "Morning!" he announced with a grin, sitting down next to me. "What's the gossip today?"
Yoimiya let out a dramatic sigh. "The gossip is that's it's Monday, and I already want to go home."
"Same here," I said, covering my mouth as I yawned.
"Well, that makes three of us." Itto said with a laugh.
I looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "You sure? You sound pretty energetic for it being a Monday morning."
Itto shrugged. "What can I say? Even if I want to go home, I can still bring the energy. Can't let Mondays get me down!"
I chuckled and shook my head. "Guess some people never lose their energy."
Thoma, sitting in front of us, turned around. "I swear, this place is like a second home... But I still don't want to be here. Usually, school is okay but today? No, I'm not in the mood for it."
I chuckled, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, today's like one of those days where you just wish the weekend could've lasted a little longer."
"And it's not even like we're doing something exciting today, just the usual boring classes." Yoimiya said, spinning her pen between her fingers.
Itto leaned back in his seat, stretching his arms behind his head. "Hey, as long as there's no surprise quiz, I'm good."
I grinned. "Don't jinx it."
Itto chuckled, turning to me. "Oh, come on. I'm not scared of a little quiz. Sure, I'd prefer if we don't have one, but I would still ace it if we do. We'll do it together."
I rolled my eyes. "Ace? Yeah, right. You're the one who usually ends up getting distracted in class, so I'm not sure how much help you'll be."
Itto gave me a dramatic gasp, placing a hand over his heart. "Hey, I'm just saving my energy for the important stuff. Like... you know... being awesome!"
"Uh-huh, right." I said with a laugh.
The bell rang, signaling the start of math class. The room quieted down as the teacher walked to the front.
"Alright, class," the teacher began, adjusting her glasses. "today, we're going over the next section in algebra, which focuses on solving equations with variables on both sides."
I sighed, getting more comfortable on my seat and trying to pay attention. Itto, however, was already scribbling something in his notebook, completely uninterested in the lesson.
The teacher went on, explaining the basics of the new topic with a clear, steady voice. I could tell she was doing her best to make it simple, but all I could think about was how long the lesson was going to last.
The equations she used were really simple, as she was trying to make it understandable for us. And that was only for now, the basics. It would get much harder later on.
"And now," the teacher continued. "let's see who's paying attention. Who can tell me the solution to this equation?"
She quickly wrote a simple equation on the board: 2x + 5 = x - 3
Itto, still drooling on his paper, didn't notice when she randomly called on him.
"Itto," the teacher said, looking at him expectantly. "What's the answer?"
Itto blinked and looked up, his eyes widening slightly. "Uh..." He glanced at the board, his mind clearly racing as he tried to figure out what was going on. He had no idea what the equation meant, having been too busy drawing something on his notebook.
I could see he was struggling, so I nudged his shoulder softly. He glanced at me from the corner of his eye. I moved my hands down a bit, making sure the teacher wouldn't see. I made a minus sign with my left hand and pointed out three fingers with my right.
Itto understood and then said the answer out loud.
"-3," he said confidently.
The teacher looked at him for a moment, then nodded. "Correct," she said, moving on.
Itto let out a small sigh of relief and glanced at me, giving me a quiet, appreciative look. He mouthed "Thanks" without making a sound.
I smiled and gave him a nod, glad that I could help him. He returned to scribbling in his notebook, but I could see a small smile tugging at his lips as he settled back into his seat.
The rest of the double lesson math felt like an eternity. Every time I thought we were finally done, the teacher would continue talking that made my brain want to shut down.
The only thing that kept my sane was the occasional glance at Itto, who was still scribbling on his paper. He was doodling different stuff next to the equations on his paper. I smiled at the sight of that.
Finally, the bell rang, signaling the end of the second math lesson. I quickly packed my stuff and then stood up. I was eager to stretch my legs and breathe something that wasn't equations.
"History time." Yoimyia muttered, looking as though she'd rather take a nap than go to the next class.
"I mean, history is better than math." I said with a slight smile as we walked down the hall toward the history classroom.
All the classrooms, except chemistry rooms, had the same seating layout. So, we sat down at our usual places.
The classroom was pretty loud as everyone filled in, but I could tell we were all still a little drained from the math lessons.
The ten minute break felt like it was over in the blink of an eye.
"Alright, everyone, take your seats." the history teacher called as he walked to the front. "Today, we'll continue with our topic about the French Revolution. I hope you've all done the reading in the history book.
I sighed softly, taking out my books and other stuff I would need.
Itto leaned over to me, a small grin tugging at his lips. "You gonna survive this lesson?" he asked in a whisper.
I shrugged, a tired smile on my face. "I don't know. At least it's not math though."
The history teacher began his lesson, detailing the rise of the revolution and the causes that led to it. She spoke with a passionate tone, clearly excited to teach the material. Despite her enthusiasm, I could feel my mind drifting. I was fighting to stay focused.
~Itto's POV~
The teacher's words blurred into the background for me. My focus had wandered somewhere else entirely.
Or rather, someone else.
My eyes drifted to (Y/N), sitting just to my left. She had her notebook open, pen in hand, and even though she was looking at the teacher, I could tell her mind wasn't fully there either.
I found myself smiling without realizing. It was strange—I had never paid this much attention to anyone before. (Y/N) wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary, but somehow, even the smallest things she did managed to grab my attention. The way she brushed her hair behind her ear or scribbled something on her notes.
It was distracting, to say the least. And it wasn't the first time, either. Lately, she'd been on my mind a lot more than I'd like to admit. I couldn't figure out why. She was different from anyone else I knew, and that made it impossible to ignore her.
I sighed quietly, tapping my pen against my desk. This was ridiculous. I needed to focus on class, not her. Bus as much as I tried to think about something else, my thoughts kept circling back to her.
My mind was all just pictures of her. I tried to think about food or something, but no. My mind just went back to (Y/N).
Her voice snapped me out of my daze, and I dropped my pen. I grabbed it quickly and turned to her.
~(Y/N)'s POV~
I glanced at Itto, who was playing with his pen, tapping it against the desk in a lazy rhythm. His gaze was fixed on nothing particular, and it was clear his thoughts were far from history class. He had that kind of look—soft and absentminded, like whatever he was thinking about had completely taken him away from here.
Curious, I leaned toward him slightly, lowering my voice. "Hey, what's on your mind? You've been zoned out for a while."
Itto blinked, startled out of his thoughts. His pen slipped from his fingers, rolling to the edge of the desk before he caught it. His cheeks turned a fait shade of red as he laughed awkwardly.
"Huh? Oh, uh, nothing! Just, you know, thinking. About... stuff."
I gave him a small smile. "Stuff? That's vague. Come on, tell me."
He fumbled with his pen, spinning it between his fingers as he looked anywhere but at me. "It's really not that interesting." he said, scratching the back of his neck. "Just, uh, random thoughts. You don't wanna hear it."
I rested my chin on my hand, looking at him. "I do, actually."
Itto hesitated, his blush deepening as his eyes flicked to mine for a short second before darting away again. "I dunno... It's nothing, really. Just... thinking about, uh, how boring this class is."
I raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. "Boring, huh? You seemed pretty lost in thought for someone who's just bored."
He chuckled nervously, the color on his cheeks not fading. "Well, maybe i was thinking about something more interesting than history, okay? But it's not a big deal."
I tilted my head, amused by his flustered state. "You're really bad at dodging questions, you know that?"
Itto laughed softly, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah, well... let's just say some thoughts are better kept to myself."
I smiled, deciding to let it go. "Alright, if you say so." There was something endearing about seeing him like this.
We both turned around attention back. Itto looked at his book again, playing with his pen. A small smile was tugging at his lips.
I shifted a bit in my seat, trying not to stare too obviously.
The rest of the double lesson history luckily went by rather fast. The bell rang, signaling the end of the class.
"Finally lunch time!" Yoimiya said with a grin. We packed our stuff and then headed out of the classroom.
"That was so boring, even Thoma couldn't concentrate." Yoimiya said and sighed softly. I chuckled at her words.
"Hey, can you blame me? I don't think anyone was able to concentrate." Thoma said and chuckled, too.
We walked down the hallway together.
The bell rang, signaling the end of history class. We filed out of the room, already looking forward to lunch. As we made our way toward the cafeteria, I spotted Ayaka waiting by the entrance, looking as composed as ever.
"Ayaka!" I called, smiling as I walked up to her. "I already missed you. How did the most competent person of the band end up in a different class?"
Ayaka chuckled, a soft smile playing on her lips. "You know, it wasn't by choice," she said with a lighthearted shrug. "But I suppose it does give me a bit more time to focus. It's been... a change of pace."
Yoimiya joined us, grinning. "Change of pace, huh? So, you're not secretly having fun without us, are you?"
Ayaka's eyes sparkled with amusement. "Of course not. I still miss the chaos, even if it is a little less... overwhelming."
We all laughed as we made our way to the cafeteria, the conversation flowing easily. Despite the busy day, it felt good to spend a moment with the group again, catching up and enjoying the break from the grind of school.
The cafeteria was buzzing with chatter as we found a table to sit at. Yoimiya was already chatting away with Ayaka. Itto and Thoma were eating.
"So, what's the plan after school?" Yoimiya asked, glancing up from her food.
I shrugged, taking a bite of my food. "Honestly, I was just thinking of taking it easy. Maybe do some homework later."
Ayaka nodded, her expression thoughtful. "Sounds like a good plan. I still need to catch up on some reading."
"Ugh, reading..." Itto grumbled, shaking his head. "You guys always make me feel like I should be doing something productive."
I chuckled. "Maybe you should, just saying."
The lunch hour passed quickly, and before we knew it, the bell rang again. We all gathered our things and headed back to class for the last stretch of the day. The afternoon classes felt like a blur—mostly lectures that seemed to drag on.
By the time 2:20 pm rolled around, I was ready to be done for the day. We all shuffled out of the building together. We exchanged goodbyes. As Ayaka and Thoma headed toward the bus stop, the rest of us started walking.
"Finally, freedom!" Yoimiya said with a bright smile. "I hate school." she added.
"I know, right?" I laughed, adjusting my bag on my shoulder. "I thought I'd never make it through today."
Itto, as usual, was in high spirits. "School is overrated. But it's fine as long as I get to see my friends."
After about seven minutes of walking, we reached a point where Yoimiya had to part ways and take another road.
"Well, this is where I leave you two lovebirds," Yoimiya said with a wink, her voice laced with mischief.
"Hey, stop that!" I said, giving her a glare. But I felt my heart do a little flip when she said that. Itto just chuckled, not bothered by her words.
She laughed and waved, disappearing down the side street.
I walked alongside Itto.
"Y'know, we should hang out more. You know, when we're not busy with school or... whatever." he said.
"Yeah, I'd like that," I said, giving him a grin. "We'll make it happen."
"Uh.. are you free on Wednesday?" Itto asked, looking at me.
"Wednesday? Yeah, I think I can make that work." I replied, curious now. "What do you have in mind?" I asked.
Itto's smile grew. "I don't know yet. We'll figure something out."
"I smiled, feeling a flutter in my chest at the thought. "Sounds like a plan."
We walked for a few more minutes, the street stretching ahead of us as the end of the day loomed near. But it wasn't until we reached a familiar crossroads that we both slowed down, the moment becoming a little bittersweet.
Itto turned to face me, his expression softened just a little. "Well, I guess this is where I leave you."
I nodded, my stomach doing that little flip again. "Yeah... guess so."
He flashed me a grin, hands in his pockets. "Take care, alright? I'll see you tomorrow."
"Definitely," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady.
We exchanged a final wave before Itto turned and walked down his street, and I stood there for a moment, watching him go. My heart was still racing, and I couldn't stop the smile spreading across my face.
I turned around and walked home, too.
Wednesday was going to be interesting.
