Charlotte and Marjorie hopped in Charlotte's car and booked it to the hospital. Marjorie played with her wedding band and engagement ring, silently cursing herself the whole way there.
Vivian then called Autumn, and Autumn raced to the hospital, leaving her daughter and niece with Winter. Vivian got Reece settled in a room; hooked up to a monitor and an IV. She stitched up his forehead and covered it, and gave him something to help with the pain.
"You are such a fucking idiot!" Autumn shouted, swinging the door open.
"I'll leave you to it." Vivian said, taking her gloves off.
Vivian gently shut the door and pressed her back against it, eavesdropping in on Autumn yelling relentlessly. Charlotte and Marjorie arrived, Marjorie running faster than Charlotte. Marjorie met Vivian at the door, breathing heavily.
"Autumns currently tearing him a new one." Vivian smirked, tapping on the door. "One second. Stay here."
Vivian walked back in the room and shut the door, hearing it click shut. The siblings looked up at the nurse, both raising an eyebrow at her.
"Marjorie's here." Vivian said, putting her hands in her pockets. "She was at Char's place. She's okay. Disheveled, but okay."
Reece let out a breath he didn't know he was holding, and looked up at Autumn and nodded. She crossed her arms and walked past the black-haired nurse, meeting Marjorie and Charlotte in the hall.
"He's all yours." Autumn said, clearing her throat.
Autumn grabbed her keys out of her pocket and walked down the hallway, abruptly leaving. Charlotte looked at Marjorie and shrugged her shoulders, before opening the door gently and ushering Marjorie in.
"Press the button if you need me." Vivian smiled, leaving the couple alone.
Marjorie pressed her back against the door, hearing it shut. She took in a huge deep breath and sighed, closing her eyes.
"Marjorie...." Reece started, his lip slightly quivering.
"Don't." Marjorie said, holding her finger up. "Let me talk."
Marjorie walked over to the hospital bed, sitting down at the edge. She placed her left hand on his leg, rubbing it gently through the blanket.
"I'm sorry." Marjorie started. "What I said was completely out of line. I didn't even know I was going to say that. I was so angry. Not at you, but at the world. For treating me so badly. For killing my mother. The one person who was supposed to make me feel safe and raise me right. Hearing those words sent me back to when they told me my father died. The anger I felt, the pain I felt. He was the only person who loved me right. Until I met you. I knew exactly what I was getting into when you asked me to be your girlfriend on that walk we took in my neighbourhood. I leapt into your arms and your bed. The night you proposed to me, and when you consoled me when my mother's words washed over me. I do not regret marrying you. I do regret not marrying you sooner. I am so sorry Reece. You've brought a light back into my life that I thought I would never see again. Please, forgive me. If not for me, for our daughter. For Clara."
Marjorie looked to the side as she tried to keep it together. Reece let a few stray tears fall, looking right at Marjorie, studying her. He looked at the rings on her ring finger and smiled to himself, taking her left hand in his. Marjorie looked at him, her lips quivering.
"It's okay, gorgeous." Reece said, pulling her closer. "I cannot imagine the pain you are feeling. Being told your mother was murdered, by Janice and at the dirty work of my father. I cannot stand to see you hurt, Marjorie. Your words hurt me, but I know it was because you were hurting. I love you. I love you so much it hurts. I cannot breathe without you. Clearly I can't drive without you," Gesturing to his head and laughing. "Come here."
Reece moved over to the side and patted next to him. Marjorie nodded and cuddled right up next to him, immediately relaxing the second he put his arm around her. Marjorie let the waterworks go, turning to the side and burying her head in his chest. Reece rubbed her arm and placed one hand on the side of her head, kissing it gently.
"How is he?" Charlotte asked, leaning on the counter to the nurses station.
"He's fine. No concussion, no major trauma." Vivian said, taking a swig of her coffee. "He got really freaking lucky. I am keeping him overnight, just to make sure."
"Okay." Charlotte nodded. "I'm gonna go. Thank you."
"Of course. Bye Charlie." Vivian smiled, watching Charlotte walk away.
Marjorie had finally settled down, her breathing getting slower. Vivian quietly walked in the room, checking on him.
"Leave her be." Reece whispered.
"I wasn't going to change that." Vivian whispered, throwing her hands up in defense. "How are you feeling?"
Reece looked down at Marjorie sleeping peacefully in his arms and smiled.
"Better now that she's here." Reece said, kissing the top of Marjorie's head once more.
"Do you need anything?" Vivian asked, crossing her arms.
"No." Reece shook his head. "I'm okay. Thank you."
Vivian nodded, shutting the lights off and walking out the door. She wasn't expecting Siobhan to be at the other end.
"Darling!" Vivian exclaimed, pulling Siobhan into a tight embrace. "What are you doing here?"
"You didn't answer your phone." Siobhan smiled. "It's after 10."
"Shit." Vivian muttered. "I'm sorry. Reece is here and him and Marjorie had this whole blowout and I got caught up."
- the next morning -
"Hey." Marjorie said, rubbing her eyes.
"Morning gorgeous." Reece said, kissing her lips gently. "You alright?"
"Been better." Marjorie chuckled, putting her glasses on. "I should be asking you that."
"I'm alright." Reece said, yawning. "I'm ready to get the hell out of here."
On perfect timing, Vivian walked in, discharge papers in hand.
"Why aren't you in scrubs?" Reece asked, taking the clipboard from her.
"Do you think I work everyday?" Vivian laughed. "You're lucky you guys are family."
Reece shook his head and signed the discharge papers, handing them straight back to Vivian. Marjorie got off the bed and went to grab her keys, but then remembered.
"Wait. Your car is totaled and Charlotte dropped me off. How the hell are we going to get home?" Marjorie asked, running her hands through her hair.
"Relax." Vivian said. "Mia dropped it off last night. I may or may not have called the village."
Vivian handed Marjorie her keys, Marjorie sighing of relief. Vivian unhooked Reece from the monitors and IV, performing one last neuro check before letting the gentle giant go. Marjorie carefully grabbed his hand and led him outside to her car.
"Are you in any pain?" Marjorie asked, helping him in the car.
"No, I'm okay." Reece grunted. "I'm ready to see Clara."
"Me too." Marjorie said, shutting the door to the passenger seat.
Marjorie hopped in the drivers seat and drove to their house, keeping her hand on Reeces thigh. When they pulled down the street, they saw several cars piled up in their driveway.
"I thought we had more time until Clara got into the party era." Reece joked.
"No kidding." Marjorie laughed. "She's giving us a run for our money, quite literally."
Marjorie parked the car and helped Reece out. She grabbed his hand and led him to the front door, unlocking it. When she opened it, everyone was there. One thing caught Reece's eye though, a sight he thought he would never see.
"Mia? Cooking?" Reece asked, walking into the kitchen.
"Shut up." Mia said, taking off Reeces apron. "It's just Alfredo. Comfort food."
Reece laughed as he looked out into the living room, and saw Clara, Logan, and Quinn playing together. Marjorie, Autumn, Sorscha, Siobhan, and Charlotte were all sitting on the couch, laughing away. Carly, Clodagh, and Winter were all setting the table. And then Vivian walked through the door, joining last minute.
Reece sighed as he rested against the door, a big dopey grin appearing on his face. He thought about what Vivian called it earlier; the village. And she was right. It sure as hell takes a village.
