The next few days flew by pretty quickly for Maja. The girl kept herself busy with house chores and working at the café, also finding the time to watch some more ski jumping videos since she really started to enjoy them. Her first day at work turned out to be much better than she had expected. Most of the people who worked at the café were extremely nice and the whole atmosphere in the café was great. It almost didn't even feel like work to her, she even started to quite like the way the all black uniform looked on her. The shirt was perfectly tailored even though it was just from a random shop and the pencil skirt clung onto her hips pleasingly.
It had been over a week since the whole fire alarm situation and the bonding with Stephan and Andi. She had only seen the two boys on the staircase once or twice since then, so she somehow managed to calm herself down about the whole friendship situation. If it didn't work then there was not much she could do. However, the truth was, she was desperate for a true friend, that's why she cared so much about bonding with people. She never really had a true friend and whenever she thought she had finally found one, it turned out to be just another betrayal. There were times she was even sick of people, she thought she didn't need friends, but deep inside she knew only close people could keep her sane.
Today was a bit of a harder day at work for Maja. The café was much busier than it had been since she started working here, some of the customers were nastier than others and she overall seemed to not be in the best mood today.
"The usual please," a handsome guy spoke, smiling at her. She saw this guy here regularly, he managed to even make her day better a few times with a small joke or just a few nice words. He clearly must live somewhere nearby since he came in here so often, or so she thought. She thought he kind of reminded her of Richard Freitag, one of the ski jumpers she saw in the videos, but this guy had no moustache, so it couldn't be him.. If he had the moustache then maybe he would look more similar.
Maja made the usual latte for the guy and placed it in front of him once it was done. She was just about to tell him the cost when a group of guys walked through the door, laughing quite loudly which caught her attention. 'Damn, must have been a funny joke' she thought sarcastically. She glanced in the direction of the door with a frown on her face because the laugh seemed too familiar to her. Four guys walked into the café, the first two she saw; she could have sworn that she had seen them before somewhere. That's when she noticed two definitely familiar faces. Andi and Stephan greeted the handsome guy who was a regular customer. A slight glimpse of hope appeared in Maja, maybe, just maybe it was Richi since the guys all knew each other. She didn't even notice she was staring at them. She finally recognised the other two guys as Markus and Karl, therefore the handsome guy must have been Freitag after all. She felt like facepalming herself, how was it possible that she had not noticed this before, she had served him at least four times now.
"Maja! Go collect the orders, we don't have time! What are you waiting for?!" Amelia, one of Maja's co-worker's urged her with a strict tone. It took Maja a moment to snap herself back to a functioning state from this. She cleared her throat and headed back to the table with a smile on her face.
"Hello guys, how are you? May I take your orders?" She spoke politely, still forcing on the smile despite the stressful shift. They all looked up at her at the same time and she had to fight the anxious feeling, she took a deep breath and made sure she held her head up high.
"Four beers please Maja," Andreas answered almost instantly. She scribbled it down on her notepad even though she would remember it anyway.
"Daytime drinking, how typical of you," she joked, shooting him a wide grin. Maja began to walk away from their table without looking back at them, but she stopped in her tracks when Andi spoke up again.
"Seems like you're loving your new job. It needed someone confident like you in here, they're always too nice to us," Andi said, also quite playfully. 'Confident' she scoffed in her mind. Although, she had to admit that she was quite satisfied with his impression of her being confident, even though it wasn't exactly the truth. She liked to seem confident though, since it meant that people wouldn't be malicious towards her, most of the time at least.
"Wait do you know each other?" Richi asked the other boys, a confused look on his face. Maja was ready to open her mouth and answer, but she took a second to realise they were not the only customers who were waiting to get served in here and with every minute passing, the place was getting more full.
"I'm sorry guys, I'd love to keep my job so I should get back to it," she sighed, giving them one last small smile before she finally walked away and started to take more orders from other customers. She couldn't help but feel like they were talking about her and their eyes were on her the whole time, but Maja was certain she was just too paranoid and it wasn't actually true.
Meanwhile Andi and Stephan explained to the rest how they knew Maja and they even went on to talking about how great she seems so far. This also didn't go by without the other boys making a comment about the girl being attractive. However, they shut up instantly when she came over to the table which made her even more nervous.
"Here are your beers, next time please don't stare at me the whole time as I am pouring them, thanks!" She laughed a little, trying to slightly loosen up the atmosphere, mostly for herself since the guys were not the ones feeling uncomfortable. She could finally breathe when the guys began to grin and laugh along.
Surprisingly Maja's day seemed to go by faster since the male group appeared in the café. It was still just as busy and she was still pretty stressed, but whenever she walked by their table they would make a quick, funny remark which would keep her going for the next few minutes, it was something she was incredibly thankful for. Unfortunately, this didn't stop Maja from being completely exhausted when she finally made it into her apartment building.
She was rummaging through her handbag, searching for the keys to her apartment which seemed to have vanished four metres deep in her bag. She huffed to herself while walking up the stairs, she was so moody she didn't even notice the two boys who were coming down the stairs. They only just caught her attention when they spoke her name out loud the second time.
"I'm so sorry, it's been a long day," she mumbled, finally fishing out the set of keys from the bottom of her bag, letting out a sigh in relief. "Can't wait for my day off tomorrow." Maja admitted, tiredly leaning against the handrail.
"I can imagine, you look like you've been through hell and back." Andi chuckled, earning himself a glare from Maja. "Oh cheer up sunshine, I'm just kidding," he added, a charming smile tugging on his lips.
"What are you planning for your day off?" Stephan questioned curiously, trying to divert her attention from Andi's previous remark, which actually seemed to have worked just fine.
"Nothing, nothing at all." She spoke proudly as if it was the best thing in the world. The boys chuckled softly at her.
"We were wondering if you wanted to come kayaking with us tomorrow." Stephan began, but Maja felt quite caught off guard by the offer and she remained quiet. "We have one space left because something popped up for Karl and he won't be joining us until later on." Stephan continued since she gave no sign of interest.
"I- um... I don't know," the girl stuttered out. Maja just wanted to stay in bed all day and sleep, but that was mainly just because of the crappy day she had today. Although, if she looked on the brighter side of it, she did get to meet the German ski jumping squad and that was definitely something.
"Oh come on, you won't regret it. I promise." Andi almost pleaded. "We go every year around this time of year because it's usually the last period before it gets too cold," He paused. "It's kind of our way of saying goodbye to the last warm days in the year and hello to the cold," the blond explained.
Maja looked blankly at the two for a while, she wasn't too convinced about the idea. She had not been kayaking in a very long time and her memories from it weren't exactly the best. She was very clumsy when it came to kayaking, that's to say the least. Also, she would be the only girl which would probably mean much more embarrassment if something messed up. Not to mention the fact it seemed too late on in the year to go kayaking, but she had to admit the weather lately has still been pretty good.
"Lena, Markus' girlfriend will come so you'd have the chance to make another friend and you won't be the only girl," Stephan spoke up as if he was reading her mind.
Maja let out a small, quiet sigh. A part of her felt like she really should go, especially after worrying that she wouldn't get another chance to spend time with her newly met friends. She had to admit she enjoyed being around them. After spending the whole day in bed, doing absolutely nothing, she would most likely regret not going with them. She could either stay at home and watch ski jumpers, or she could hang out with some of the ski jumpers. In that moment, the answer became clear to her.
The guys were beginning to lose hope that she will join them, but that's when the girl smiled. "I'll come," she finally spoke up and turned to face Andi. "But if it won't be worth it, I want my wasted time back Welli!" She joked, playfully pointing a finger at him.
"Great! Be ready for 12 tomorrow," the younger boy beamed. Maja nodded with a genuine smile on her face before she pushed herself away from the handrail she was previously leaning on and she started to make her way up the last few steps.
"See you tomorrow boys," she yawned out, still slightly smiling. Despite the tiredness, she still managed to duck when Andreas was about to ruffle up her hair while she walked past him. She ran up the next two steps and stuck her tongue out to the guys before she gave them a small wave and disappeared behind the doors to her apartment.
The next morning Maja woke up in a surprisingly good mood, perhaps it was the fact she had around 12 hours of sleep so she felt well rested, but she still felt like she could easily sleep some more. The girl felt pretty excited about the day waiting ahead of her. When she pulled open the curtains, she was almost blinded by the sunlight. 'Perfect' she thought. If the weather wasn't great, there was a possibility that they wouldn't go kayaking, but since the sun was shinning brightly outside, what could go wrong?
After taking a shower, having a small breakfast and getting dressed, Maja was ready with ten minutes to spare. She packed a small bag with a towel just in case she somehow ended up in the water and just a few more other small things she could possibly need.
Just a few minutes later there was a knock on Maja's door. "Coming!" She yelled, gathering her stuff and making a last check that she had everything. She walked out of her apartment with a bright smile on her face, the two boys greeted her with ones just as wide.
"I see someone's excited to spend some time with us." Andi already began his teasing, making the girl roll her eyes. 'Who wouldn't be though' she thought instantly, but quickly shook that thought out of her head.
Maja followed the boys downstairs and over to Andi's car. Stephan took her bag and placed it in the boot, before they all got in, with Andi as the driver. They were meeting the other three at the starting point of their kayaking trip. Maja couldn't help, but feel slightly nervous. She knew Stephan and Andi for over a week, but she only knew the rest from yesterday at the café, so she wasn't sure the rest would even like her company.
The ride took just under an hour, thankfully the boys started goofing around which meant Maja wasn't sat there focusing on worrying the whole journey. When they arrived, she noticed the blonde girl with two guys before she even had a chance to leave the car. She took a deep breath and stepped out of the Audi, forcing herself to gather all the confidence she had in her.
"Damn, you're actually on time Wellinger, what is this?" Markus grinned at his friend as they all gathered round together.
"I made sure he wouldn't take too long on his hair because it'll get soaked anyway," Maja laughed, instantly moving away from Andi and hiding behind Stephan so that he couldn't do anything to her. Andreas made a joke in the car about how he would make sure she falls into the water if she would make another dumb comment about his hair being so messy.
"You must be Maja," the tall blonde girl stepped closer to Maja, extending her hand out. "I'm Lena, hi." She smiled sweetly. Lena was an incredibly pretty girl, not the 'magazine cover girl' type of pretty, just naturally pretty and she wasn't afraid of her flaws.
"That's me. It's nice to meet you." Maja smiled back and gently shook the girl's hand.
"We're going to sort out the kayaks, can you two girls get the life jackets out of the car?" Richard asked politely. The girls both just nodded in agreement before they started to walk to Markus' car. Maja felt some sort of tension between her and Lena, but she couldn't figure out if it was just because of the fact they didn't know each other yet. She searched her head for something to say to make it less awkward, but the other girl beat her to it.
"You do realise this will be a complete disaster, right?" Lena asked with a very amused look on her face, but Maja looked at her slightly confused. "Last year we had to end the kayaking early because they couldn't get their shit together and it started to get dark before we even got halfway." She continued, both of them beginning to laugh soon after.
"Oh great, what did I sign up to."
It seemed like there was one hell of a day ahead of them.
