The dragon skimmed over the tops of the trees, flying silently. Three black streaks were powering along below him, dodging through the trees easily. Lumbering along behind them was three more blurs, not moving quite as fast as their elders, but silent all the same.

The dragon flew higher into the air, beating his powerful wings and gaining height quickly. A herd of Feldunost were grazing in a clearing. There were no dwarves near them so the dragon assumed they were wild, but just to be sure he examined their minds. They had never seen a fence in their life.

Grinning in the only way a dragon could he sent a mental picture to the Shrrg on the ground. He showed them a series of images. Him flying down to the Feldunost on the opposite side to them. The giant wolves spreading out to form a wall of fur and muscle, the younger ones on the side. He showed them the giant goats as they ran towards them, and once he got a sense of acknowledgement from the wolves below he put the plan into action.

He swung around behind them; banking heavily, then closed his wings quickly, and dived. He fell through the air and he closed his eyes in pleasure. The emotions in his head spiralled out of control as the full pleasure of flight took over him. Just before he hit the ground he opened his eyes, and his wings shot out. The pull of muscles in his wings made him wince, but it was worth it.

The Feldunost still didn’t notice him, and proceeded with there grazing without a care in the world. He snorted; he was about to make himself noticed. He opened his maw and let out the loudest roar he could. The sound echoed throughout the valley. It took two seconds for the Feldunost to realise the sound, and two more seconds to start there stampede in the opposite direction to the horrifying sound of a dragon’s bloodthirsty roar. The thing was, they ran right into the six Shrrg.

The wolves instantly picked out the weakest of the herd and went for it. The two from the front dove into the herd, diving through the goats with ease. They managed to get their target out of the herd towards the left. Two wolves came from the side, one of the more experienced ones and a newly matured pup. Together they took down the goat. The pup got the honour of her first kill, ripping the Feldunost’s throat out.

The dragon felt the cubs pride in the kill, and sent her a gentle feeling of gratitude, telling her well done. The cub howled into the air with victory, and was soon joined by the other four. Together they feasted on the goat and began to drag the remains back to their den. The dragon decided to go for his own kill, swooping down a picking up his own goat. It struggled for a few seconds before it stopped, dead.

He sent an image to wolves, telling them that he was just going to be eating on a mountainside. They acknowledged him once more, they were used to his often disappearing. He was naturally a solitary creature after all.

He landed on the side of the mountain and began to wolf down his meal. He was still growing rather quickly. Another month had passed since his meeting with what he now knew as a human. Her name was Angela, and had been teaching him all she knew about the dragons, and also how to speak with his mind and shield it. It was tough at first to adapt the new life but he found himself a quick learner and the language of humans was coming easily. He felt he remembered some of it from when he was within his egg as well.

As he went through his thoughts a flicker of blue caught his eyes. Frowning he looked up from the bloody remains of his meal, and froze. There, flying through his valley, was another dragon. She was slightly smaller then him, with a longer tail and neck. Her scales glittered the colour of dark blue sapphires and her lighter underbelly the colour of the sky. Her wings were beating beautifully, catching every updraft without the slightest difficulty.

‘Beautiful,’ was the word that came to his mind.

He was about to fly out and meet her when he spotted the human on her back, as well as what looked like a human attached to her underside. The human on her back had a look of worry as he urged the dragon beneath him to go faster. She obliged, grabbing the air with huge beats from her wings.

The green dragon hesitated to fly out. She was one of the dragons with a rider. A rider that shared a bond with her so deep if one died the other would likely die to.

Making his decision he started to climb higher up the mountain where the air was frigid and occasionally it hurt to breath. When he was high enough he opened his wings and took flight, flying over the beautiful dragoness below. She didn’t notice and instead continued flying.

He trailed her for over an hour, until she came to a stop, flying down to a clearing below. Her breaths were coming out in ragged gasps of air. The green dragon circled over them, keeping his body within the clouds.

Before long another human joined them. This one was riding a strange hooved creature with long hair on its neck. The dragon frowned, he wondered if such an animal would taste nice. The two humans mingled with each other, talking. He was to high up to here them but he could see that they were on a disagreement about something.

It wasn’t until then he realised he was in an enemy territory. He had never been this far into the mountains before and he could even smell the sent of unfriendly Shrrg from up where he was flying. Making a split second decision he turned around and began to wing his way back towards his own familiar territory.

It took him far longer then he thought, and before long was hopelessly lost.  Growling in frustration he landed on a mountain, trying to gather his thoughts. He paced around the small clearing he was in, trying to remember the way he had gone, but his thoughts kept on drifting towards the rider’s dragon. The blue dragoness. He growled again, why was he so infatuated with her. Was it that she was the only other dragon he had seen? Or was it because she was female? He let out a draconic sigh and sat down on his haunches. He took deep breaths through his noes as he cleared his thoughts. A technique that Angela had taught him.

Once his mind was cleared he looked up into the sky again and took off. The area seemed familiar enough. It wasn’t that he had been here before but he was sure he had seen an area like this. Putting away the information he took a sharp right, flying through another valley. His eyesight zoomed in on a waterfall at the end of the valley, a familiar waterfall. He nodded to himself, proud he had got back to his own territory.

Swooping down he landed in front of the cave with a large thump, sending the Shrrg inside an image telling them that he was back. They acknowledged him and continued with what they were doing. Even if they were his family there mind was simple minded creatures. There was another presence in there, that felt very angry. Before long the two-leg… human, called Angela, stormed out of the cave.

“WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!” she yelled at the dragon, “I have been worried sick, gone for almost three hours you were. I was beginning to think that you had been captured by the empire.”

The dragon blinked, the words were coming to fast for him to make any sense of them, ‘I… don’t under… understand.’

Angela sighed, “Sharrag, where have you been.”

The dragon nodded in understanding, ‘I saw blue dragon… female. A human on back and another human with strange animal.’

Angela’s eyes widened in surprise, “A blue dragoness? Show me.”

He sent her images of what he had seen. The blue dragon flying through the air and the human on her back, as well as the one on her stomach. He showed her how he followed her for a while then realised how far he had gone, before turning back. Once it was all over Angela looked excited.

“That was Eragon! Oooh, this is interesting,” she said excitedly, “I knew he was a dragon rider, but of a female dragon. I can’t wait to see what will happen.”

She rushed into the cave and began packing her few belongings in the cave. Sharrag watched her with slight confusion, and the Shrrg inside the cave growled slightly with surprise.

‘What you doing?’ asked Sharrag eventually.

‘I’m leaving,’ Angela replied with thought, focused on packing her belongings.

His eyes widened in surprise, ‘Why?’

The human looked up at him, ‘Eragon is travelling to the resistance movement, or the Varden. He will need all the help he can get. Besides, I like to be places where interesting things are happening. I will visit you from time to time, but right now I think you can look after yourself.’

The dragon tilted his head, not quite getting all that she was saying, but realising what it meant.

‘Will you tell others about me?’ he asked.

Angela shook his head, ‘Not unless you want me to. But if I do you will be caught up in this war, and will have to choose a side.’

‘Good,’ replied Sharrag, ‘I don’t want to fight for what’s not mine, or meant to be mine.’

‘Spoken like a true dragon,’ She smirked, before hoisting a bag onto her back.

Sharrag watched her. He was sad that she was leaving. She was the one who had taught him about dragons and how to protect his mind, and speak. She had even given him a name, Sharrag, but he was also happy that she was going. He was a wild dragon and being in the company of two-legs, no matter what species, made him slightly uncomfortable.

“Would you mind flying me to the edge of your territory?” asked Angela, “The longer it takes for me to get to the Varden the less time I will have to help Eragon.”

The dragon tilted his head, ‘Okay, but hold on.’

She laughed, ‘Don’t worry, I will.’

Sharrag knelt down so it was easier to get onto his back. Angela climbed up easily. The dragon shifted underneath her. He was unused to having something on his back. Once he had gotten used to the feeling he walked out of the cave.

Angela clutched one of his back spines on his back, holding on as tight as she could. She had ridden dragons before and new the dangers of riding without a saddle, she just hoped she wasn’t hurt to badly by the end.

Sharrag launched himself into the air, flapping his wings largely. Before long they were flying along his valley. It wouldn’t take to long to get to the edge of his territory. They flew in silence, Angela focused on keeping herself from getting injured and Sharrag trying his best to fly smoothly.

They landed on the edge of his territory, in amongst some trees. Angela slid off his back and onto the ground. They stood together for a small while.

“Keep safe,” said the human eventually, “And remember to keep up your vocabulary. It wouldn’t be the best to come back and find out that you had forgotten all the words I had taught you.”

The dragon grinned a dragon smile, ‘You to wise one. I don’t want you die before you get to Varden.’

She pattered the dragon on the snout and smiled, “I seriously doubt that.”

She looked into the forest and hoisted her pack over her shoulder once more before walking into the trees. Sharrag sat there for a while, watching after her, before taking wing and flying back to his cave.
