Chapter Four
When Angie got downstairs, everyone acted normal. They set a place for her like they used to when she was younger, and saved her the same seat she always had when she was younger. Her seat was in between Jared and Kate, across from the space that would have been for her Mother.
"Did you get everything unpacked?" Maya asked, setting the rest of the food on the table.
"Yes I did, thank you," Angie muttered. She sat down next to Jared, and he wouldn't even look at her. She put some food on her plate, and then waited for grace to be said. But Angie forgot that the Shay family wasn't religious like Angie was. So silently she prayed in her head, and then dug into the chicken and the mashed potatoes.
Then the screen door swung open, and slammed shut. "Allie's home," Kate sighed, giving me a small smile.
Allison Shay stormed into the kitchen, and took her seat where her high chair used to be. "Allie, we have a guest," Maya hissed.
"Hardly," Jared scoffed, and I kicked his leg under the table.
"I hate everything," Allie grumbled, "The world sucks."
"You don't mean that," Maya sighed.
"Yes I do," She argued, "I wish I wasn't a girl! Why couldn't you have made me a boy so I could shrug things off?"
Angie smiled, and looked down at her food. "We all wish you were a boy," Jared commented.
Maya shot Jared a glare, and then rested her hand on Allie's hand. "What happened baby?" Maya asked.
"It's all his fault," Allie yelled, pointing across the table to Jared. Jared's eyes widened, and he sat up straighter.
"What did I do?" Jared snapped.
"No one wants to hang out with me anymore," Allie cried, "You ruined all of my friendships. Kids are scared to come over here Jared, they're scared of you. I get the side glance from every parent that watches me. Now every time someone just sees Seabrook, they know you're here!"
"Why?" Angie whispered in Kate's ear.
"Didn't you notice the big circle with the J in it?" Kate asked, "On the sign? Jared created that after our Dad died."
"Even dogs are scared of looking at me," Allie sneered, giving a laugh of disbelief, "I hate you, I hate you!"
"Allison," Maya gasped.
Allie stood up from her chair, and screamed, "I wished you died instead of Dad! You know what else? Huh Jared, you know what else?"
Jared just stared at Allie with cold green eyes. "Huh Jared?" Allie screamed, "Do you know what else happened today?"
"What happened?" Jared whispered.
"I met one of your jail bodies," She sneered, "They told me to tell you hi."
"So?" Jared asked.
"Then they got closer," She hissed, "And closer, and closer. Know what they tried to do?"
"Allie," Maya whispered, "Did they do something?"
"NO I ran," She screamed, "I wouldn't have had to though if I had a good older brother. A good older brother would have killed that guy, especially a big guy like you."
"I'll talk to him," Jared growled.
"Oh after he tried something?" Allie sneered, "Thanks that means everything to me."
Jared's face grew tough, and he gripped his hands into a tight fist under the table. "Go ahead Jared," Allie continued, "Go tell your jail friends to stop hitting on your younger sister."
"Allie, stop," Angie whispered.
Allie snapped her mouth shut, and looked over at me. "Excuse me," She hissed.
"I said stop," Angie repeated, "That was wrong what that guy did, but Jared couldn't have controlled what that guy was doing. It was just a coincidence that Jared knew him."
Everyone was silent, and Angie could feel the heat rushing to her cheeks. "And everything else?" Allie challenged, "Is everything else that happened not his fault?"
Angie looked at Jared, and then thought of all the things Allie had said. "No that was his fault," Angie agreed, and then started eating her meal again.
Allie smiled triumphantly, "See, even Angela agrees with me and she's hasn't been here in nine years. That should tell you something."
"Didn't you hear? She goes by Angie now," Jared hissed, and Angie blushed again.
"God I hate you," Allie growled.
"The feeling is mutual," He snapped, then pushed away from the table.
"Where are you going?" Maya whispered.
"I told you I was going out," He snapped, "I'll see you tomorrow morning."
"Be safe," Maya warned, and Jared just brushed her off. He grabbed his jacket, and was out the door. The engine started, and then gravel was flew everywhere.
Angie winced, and stared deeply at her food. "Jerk," Allie muttered before sitting down at the table. It was quiet for a second, and Angie didn't want to say anything, because she felt this was all her fault. Everything was her fault, and no one would know it.
"I'm sorry Angela," Allie whispered.
Angie looked up at Allie, and gave a warm smile. "It's alright," Angie told her, "I shouldn't have intruded like that. I'm just so nosy, and need to get my nose into everything."
Allie laughed, "It's good to have you back."
Angie gave her a small smile, and wanted to tell her it was good to be back, but so far it wasn't. Just seeing the old house made Angie feel guilty with the bad memories it brought. She wanted to go home, and lay in bed with her little kitten. Jess had forced Angie come though, and now that she was here, there was no way of going home until the funeral was over.
Soon dinner was over, and Angie got up to wash her plate off. Her eyes wandered off, and she noticed the large fence in the background that blocked off the beach. "What's the gate for?" She whispered, "It was never there before."
"It holds Jared's German Sheppard," Kate muttered.
"Chester?" Angie asked. Angie didn't remember Chester being a German Sheppard. She remembered him being a loveable Golden Retriever.
"Oh no," Kate said stiffly, "Chester's gone. You'll have to ask Jared about that though. That dogs name is Gina."
Angie pulled her eyebrows together, and looked outside. "The dogs vicious though," Kate continued, "So I would watch out. She only likes Jared, and so far I haven't even had the guts to try."
"Wow," Angie whispered.
"So watch yourself," Kate winced, "I have to go clean my room, but I'll see you soon."
Angie waved goodbye, but continued to look out the window. She didn't see a dog, but she wasn't going to test anything.
After her dishes were clean, Angie slowly walked up the few stairs and down the hall into her room.
The Shay house was a special house. It had a long driveway way, with a house at the bottom. Behind the house was a beach, a beach with an ocean that flowed through the woods. The woods were the reason why Angie didn't come back. They scared her, and to have them right there made things even worse.
The woods freaked Angie out, and there was nothing anyone could do about that. Angie was scared, and alone. That's what she dreamed of when she tried to fall asleep- the lonely woods.
