Chapter Seventeen

Maybe Robert didn’t deserve to die to some people, but to Jared, he wished Robert burned in the pits of hell.

All Robert wanted, was a son.

So when Robert was given a son as his first child, he rejoiced. Then Jared started hanging out with Angela Nicolson, and became soft. Whenever her name came up, he was weak. If Angie wanted the world, Jared would have gladly handed it to her on a silver platter. It didn’t matter the Angie wasn’t as pretty as the other girl’s, but that she wasn’t afraid of him.

Jared sometimes just looked scary, and Angie wasn’t afraid of that. She would give Jared attitude if that’s what the matter called for. Jared liked that, and respected that. He loved hanging out with Angie, and his weakness showed to his Father.

Robert wanted a tough son, and this was what he got? Robert hated that, and was always angry at Jared for it. That’s why Jared hated his Father so much. Robert just never gave Jared a break, no matter how hard he tried.

The priest continued to talk, but Jared hardly heard any of it. Maya was sobbing at his side, and Angie kept taking in deep breaths. She wasn’t crying, but it sounded like she was hyperventilating.

Jared turned around, and put his hand on Angie’s shoulder. “It’s alright,” He whispered, “Close your eyes and take soothing breaths through your nose.”

Angie looked at him with her beautiful eyes. The pretty brown eyes that had green specks in them- they captivated him. He was lost in them, and quickly had to find himself again, because she was talking to him.

“I’m sorry,” She babbled, “I don’t even know why I’m crying. I didn’t know him that well.”

Maya leaned across Jared, and took Angie’s hand. Maya forced herself to smile at Angie, but anyone who knew Maya could tell it was fake. So Maya sat back, and put her arm around Kate, who was holding a tissue close to her face.

“How are you not crying?” Angie asked, “He was your Father.”

“We weren’t that close,” Jared explained shortly.

Angie looked at him, but Maya leaned over to answer. “Robert was sadly the one who sent Jared to jail when he was nine,” Maya explained, “But I prefer not to think about that when I think of him.”

Maya sat back in her seat, and sniffed loudly. Angie’s eyes widened, when she realized what Maya said. “Wait,” She whispered, “When you were nine…?”

Jared put his finger on her lips, and she immediately shut up. “Shush, we’ll talk about it when we get home,” He whispered. Angie’s cheeks became a faint pink, and she nodded.

Isabel leaned over in her seat, and narrowed her eyes at Jared. Jared ignored her, and turned back in his seat. Izzy’s eyes pierced through Jared, but he tried his best to ignore her. Jared was just hoping that Angie would forget about what Maya had said. That would mean less trouble for Jared.

Angie started shaking again, and her hand was quivering beside Jared’s leg. Jared sighed loudly, and then gently put his hand over hers. The quivering stopped, and Angie looked over at Jared.

Her cheek was blown up a little, bruised, and there was a scratch on it. Jared winced as if he hit her. It was Lisa though; he could see the outline of her ring. Jared had to remember that he was going to make Lisa pay for hurting her like that when she was only trying to help them.

When the priest was done talking, everyone went outside to burry Robert. Jared held an umbrella high, and Maya and Allie cowered under it. There wasn’t much room, but Allie pressed herself against her older brother for warmth.

Jared looked over at Angie, and watched her huddle closely to Izzy under a different umbrella. He wanted to talk with her, to hold her, but he couldn’t. He just couldn’t. Things would turn out badly if he did, well they would for Jared. Just looking at Angie made him ache.

Jared kissed the top of Allie’s head, and she looked up at him. Allie looked up at her older brother. She gave Jared a small smile, and then turned back to the casket. It was slowly being lowered into the ground, which only made Maya cry harder. Jared put her arm around her, and shielded her from the rain.

I’ll protect you, Jared wanted to tell her. I’ll keep you safe, and make sure no one hurts you. He didn’t though, because things would be weird for them.

Maya looked up at her son, and then Jared knew how much his Mother wanted him to say what he just thought. Her eyes were a pretty green, and her black hair was in curls, which were slowly being ruined.

Jared decided he would say something that would cover it all. He would cover everything he felt for his Mother, including the sorrow that he wanted to share with her. “I love you,” Jared whispered, and Maya broke into harder tears. “What did I say?” Jared asked, searching his Mother’s face for the answer.

Instead of answering, Maya held tightly to her son. “I never thought I’d hear you say that,” She cried, pressing her face into his shoulder.

“You know I mean it though, right?” Jared asked.

“Oh Jared,” She blubbered, “I love you too.”

Jared held his Mother tighter with his free arm. Jared watched as Father being buried, and didn’t feel the littlest bit sorry. He was sorry his family was upset, and he was sorry that his Father’s death brought out the Nicolson sisters. He wasn’t sorry that his Father was dead. No, he wasn’t sorry at all. In fact, if Jared had thought about it, he would have killed his Father himself.

“Come on Jared,” Maya whispered, “Let’s go home.”

Jared didn’t realize that the funeral was over, and people were starting to leave. Angie came over, and patted his arm before getting back in the car with her sister.

“Did you even cry a little?” Allie asked, wiping under her eyes.

“Not as much as you,” He replied.

          “It was sad,” She pouted.

Jared patted her head, and slowly walked back to the car with his Mother. “Do you want me to drive?” Jared asked.

“Do you even remember how to drive a car?” Kate laughed.

“Well of course I do,” Jared told her, giving her a small smile. Kate smiled back, and got in the front seat.

“Sure,” Maya whispered, handing her son the keys. Jared kissed the top of her head, and then got in the driver’s seat. He put the keys in the ignition, and started driving.

They road home in silence, and then Jared pulled into the log driveway. “I hate this driveway,” Maya muttered from the backseat, “Robert loved this house, and thought it was cool. That’s the only reason we got it.”

“I like our house,” Kate told her.

“So do I,” Allie chimed in.

“I like it too,” Jared whispered.

Jared stopped in front of the house. Angie and Izzy were waiting by the doorway. Angie wore a weak smile. Jared was glad that they were on the porch, protected from the rain.

Jared stopped the car, and got out with an umbrella.

“Mom, maybe you should get some rest,” Kate whispered, “Maybe we all should get some rest.”

“But what if I’m not tired,” Allie whined.

“It was just a suggestion,” Kate said defensively.

“I think we all need to take a breather,” Jared said, “I’ll see you guys inside.”

Jared got out of the car, and walked towards the house. He watched Angie, and when he was standing in front of her, he just stared. She looked up at him.

Jared wanted to say something, but before he could, someone drove down the driveway. Jared turned around, and saw that it was Ethan. “Dude, what’re you doing here?” Jared asked, as Ethan got out of the car.

“Don’t tell me you forgot,” Ethan yelled, “PARTAYY!”
