Daisy was running out of time. She knew it, too. The task was that Friday. It was Monday. She still wanted to throw her egg at the wall. She hadn't seen Cedric in a few weeks, so she didn't know if he had gotten it or not.
Lee had one last theory he thought she should test, his water theory. She knew of a prefect bathroom that was "out of order" on the 5th floor.
"I'll be back," Daisy huffed, storming out of the common room. Fred and George gave each other a concerning look, and they followed her.
"Where are we going?" Fred asked in a sing-song voice.
"I'm going to the prefect bathroom."
"You're not a prefect though, Diggory," George questioned.
"No, I'm not," she stopped in her tracks, "you two can go back to the common room, I'm alright."
They looked at her, then at each other, then back at her, "if you say so," they said in unison.
Daisy continued her walk to the bathroom, and once she got there she turned on the water, and a large portion of the bathroom turned into a large bath. She put down her bag, which contained the egg as well as a notebook, a book on the triwizard tournament, and her wand.
It was cold in the bathroom, shivers went down her spine as she slipped her clothes off and went into the water. She sat there quietly for a while, almost forgetting about the egg and letting herself calm down.
"Whatcha doing?" She heard the giggle of a little girl from somewhere else in the bathroom. Daisy's eyes grew wide, and she went to shovel what was left of the bubbles towards herself in an attempt to cover her up. It worked well enough, but she still considered herself quite exposed.
"Who's there?" she asked, taking her wand out from her bag and pointing it around the bathroom.
"It's only me, silly," she giggled as she popped out of the water about 10 feet away from her.
"Myrtle!" Daisy sighed, putting her wand down as she saw the ghost. Myrtle was a Hogwarts student, she died in the bathroom by the hand of Tom Riddle during her time here. She was odd, that's for sure. But no one wanted to make an enemy out of her, especially when you had to go to the bathroom, "Nearly scared me half to death."
"Oh, well sorry..." she began, moving closer to Daisy, "so, what's the shiny thing?" she looked closely at the egg, "the handsome one brought something like that here..."
"The handsome one?" Daisy thought, Myrtle was known to be a bit of a flirt, she thought everyone was attractive.
"Yeah, don't remember his name... he's a hufflepuff, though," she thought, keeping her eyes on the egg that was clutched closely to Daisy's chest.
"Cedric?" Myrtle nodded, "that's my brother!"
"Explains why you're both so pretty," Myrtle now looked at her.
"Dude, personal space..." Daisy pulled some bubbles back towards her, "I'm naked over here!"
"I don't mind if you don't... hehe," Myrtle laughed, sitting next to Daisy and resting her head on her shoulder.
"I do mind, I'm taken," Daisy shrugged, Myrtle left goosebumps on her skin.
"You do still like girls, don't you...?" Daisy didn't respond, "don't think I forgot when you came in here with that ravenclaw that one time and you two-"
"I'm here for a purpose, if you don't mind," Myrtle frowned at Daisy cutting her off and jumped away, diving into the water near the spot she appeared from.
Daisy looked at the egg and held it farther away from her, and she took a deep breath before she plunged under the water and opened the egg, bracing herself for a terrible noise.
To her surprise, the screech never came, and instead she heard the most beautiful singing she thought she'd ever heard. The voice sang:
"Come seek us where our voices sound,
We cannot sing above the ground,
And while you're searching ponder this;
We've taken what you'll sorely miss,
An hour long you'll have to look,
And to recover what we took,
But past an hour, the prospect's black,
Too late, it's gone, it won't come back."
Daisy took in a deep breath as she emerged from the water, quickly writing down what she heard from the egg. She hastily dried herself off and began getting dressed.
"You're leaving so soon?" Myrtle whimpered, "but we're having so much fun."
"I've gotta go figure out what that meant," Daisy mumbled to herself, picking up her bag and making her way to the door.
"You'll come back, won't you?" Myrtle floated in front of the door, "I get so lonely here..."
"Myrtle, I'm very busy this year," Daisy stated plainly, "if you don't mind, I've got to go."
"No fair!" Myrtle whined as Daisy walked away.
Daisy didn't care about Myrtle at the moment, she went straight to the library. To look for what, she didn't know, but she knew she'd be able to focus there.
Come seek us where our voices sound, we cannot sing above the ground...
"Can't sing above the ground, what lives under the ground?" Daisy thought to herself, "ok well the key to the clue was water, right?" she began, pacing back in forth near the table she had put her stuff on, "what lives in the water and sings?" she stood in her tracks, scratching the side of her head.
"A mermaid," a voice said from behind her.
"Victor Krum," Daisy said in surprise when she saw the Bulgarian leaning on a bookshelf, "can I help you?"
"No," he began, "but maybe I can help you," he smiled at her, and sat down at the table she had claimed
"You said a mermaid?" Daisy asked.
"I did, you guys don't study creatures here?"
"We do, there's just so many of them," she added, sitting down across from him, "you got your egg open?"
"I did a few days ago, the clue still confuses me though," he shrugged, seeing her egg was still a bit wet, "you just figured out how to open it?"
"Yeah I came right here after," he nodded, "want to figure it out together?" Daisy asked.
He nodded again, "sounds like fun," he smiled at her, "so what's the rest of the clue?"
"Well it says we've taken what you'll sorely miss..." Daisy began.
"So mermaids took something important to us..." Krum continued off her idea.
"An hour long we'll have to look..." Daisy started, "an hour under water? How are we supposed to breathe?"
"Suppose that's why we needed the clue then, isn't it?" Victor shrugged.
"And then the end of it..." Daisy read the last two lines out loud, "if we fail no one's gonna rescue them?"
"Yeah that's a lot of pressure," Victor laughed.
"So somewhere there's mermaids at hogwarts..." Daisy thought, "but where?"
"You've got any ponds or rivers or anything?" he suggested, talking absentmindedly.
"The black lake," Daisy scoffed, "so on Friday something important to us if going to be held captive by mermaids at the bottom of the black lake, and we've got an hour to get it or it'll be lost forever?"
"Yeah... I think you've got it," Victor looked at her, "we work pretty well together," he smiled.
"I agree, I've been trying to figure out that dumb egg since the first task," she laughed, "opening it was the hard part, the clue was pretty simple."
"Yeah, but now we've got to figure out how to breathe underwater for an hour..." his eyes wondered, "should be fun."
"Sounds like a tomorrow problem," Daisy laughed, which made him laugh, "thanks for the help, I'll see you at the lake on friday?"
"See you then," he smiled as Daisy walked away towards her common room. She'd never talked to Krum before. For a famous quidditch player, he seemed rather humble. Different person then the person who'd winked at her the first day he arrived.
"Why are you all wet?" George asked her when she arrived at the common room, "you look cold, come here," he pulled her towards the fireplace and sat her down on the couch.
"I figured it out," Daisy laughed to herself.
"Well what is it?" Lee asked in excitement, "was my idea right?"
George, Fred and Lee all listened intensely as Daisy explained where she went and how she figured it out, leaving out the parts where Myrtle flirted with her and Krum helped her. She didn't think it was important.
"I don't know what object they'll take for me, though... I don't have anything super important," She shrugged, "I've also got to figure out how to breathe underwater for an hour..."
"Well leave that bit to us, Rosie," Fred stated, "we helped you with the first one, we can help you now, right George?"
"Yeah we've got that," He put a comforting arm around her, "You do know how to swim though, right?"
"Oh shut up, you loser."
