Chapter 7

I wake to sunlight blinding my eyes. I sit up, and groan. I shade my eyes with my hand, and look around the small tent. Carl must've woken up already, since his sleeping bag is empty. I crawl out of the tent with a pair of jeans and one of Carl's T-shirts in my hand, along with my knife. One bite can kill you. You can't be too prepared. I walk into the woods, and find a large bush to change behind.

I quickly slip off my pajamas, and put on the clothes Carl had loaned me. The woods next to the campsite has many large, strong trees, so I decide to climb a sturdy oak tree. I find a fork in the branches, and make myself comfortable. I see a mocking bird, chriping and mimicking any sounds it hears.

Seeing the bird, I decide to sing a song. It was one of my old favorites.

"My girl, my girl, don't lie to me

Tell me where did you sleep last night

In the pines, in the pines

Where the sun don't ever shine

I would shiver the whole night through

My girl, my girl, where will you go

I'm going where the cold wind blows

In the pines, in the pines

Where the sun don't ever shine

I would shiver the whole night through

Her husband, was a hard working man

Just about a mile from here

His head was found in a driving wheel

But his body never was found

My girl, my girl, don't lie to me

Tell me where did you sleep last night

In the pines, in the pines

Where the sun don't ever shine

I would shiver the whole night through

My girl, my girl, where will you go

I'm going where the cold wind blows

In the pines, in the pines

Where the sun don't ever shine

I would shiver the whole night through

My girl, my girl, don't lie to me

Tell me where did you sleep last night

In the pines, in the pines

Where the sun don't ever shine

I would shiver the whole night through

My girl, my girl, where will you go

I'm going where the cold wind blows

In the pines, in the pines

Where the sun don't ever shine

I would shiver the whole night through" I sing peacefully.

I climb down from the tree, and pick up my belongings. Beginning the trek back to the camp, I hear a rustle. Being the little ninja I am, I sneak to where I heard the noise.

I see Glenn emerging from the gap in the fence leading into the city. When I see who is behind him, my mouth drops.

"Holy shit."
