..................................

Travelling home for christmas always felt good, the warm feeling oozed into her body despite the bitter chill outside of the car, having the heaters full blast helped too. Thankful for what would be some rest and re-cooperation with family, it's been few years.

Y/n had spent previous holidays with college friends families or has only briefly been able to spend christmas at home for a couple of days instead of over a week. Y/n had got lucky with her work vacation days this time. Having had a turbulent time when she first started the job in commercial property just over a year ago, to now she has established some rapport with co-workers and clients.

Pulling into the gated community where she grew up, being met with various houses on the street decorated in an array of flashing lights. It was pretty, it was nostalgic, it was....home.

The only thing missing was snow.

Her family knew she was going to arrive a little late to the pre-christmas get together, unfortunately traffic wasn't very forgiving this time of year and the drive home took an extra hour.

Y/n had a whole sack load of stuff in the car, she was hoping she could sneak in grab one of her parents to help with the load before being distracted by everyone.

Parking up on the drive next to her dad's car, she sighed out in relief. Taking a look from the outside you would think nothing was happening on the inside, but she knew from previous years rooms would be full of belly laughter and christmas cheer from her neighbours all gathered.

Y/n checked herself in the pull down visor mirror making sure she looked presentable after a long journey. Exiting the car she eased towards the front door, slowly opening it and peering in immediately being hit with warmth and aromatic smells of homecooked food along with distant chatter.

Fully entering, the dog was the first to notice her, he was at the bottom of the stairs lying down until he heard the door standing alert. He eyed her before his tail started wagging so vigorously his whole backend moved along with it.

A smile broke out on Y/n face and she bent down on one knee greeting him with cuddles and scratches. "Hey old friend, long time no see. Missed you Buddy.......look what they have done to you, turned you into a reindeer huh..." Y/n cooed as she noticed the reindeer antlers on his head.

"Y/n!?" Came a deep voice.

She glanced up to find her dad coming down the stairs, the dog must have been waiting on him.

"Hey dad....." Y/n greeted warmly standing up, once he took the last step he pulled her into a hug.

"Glad you're home, come on let's go see everyone." He said happily.

"Me too! Wait can you help me get everything out the car first otherwise I'm going to go in and never get out." Y/n chuckled knowing because she hasn't seen a lot of them in a long time and doesn't want to be rude it's best to get all the stuff from her car first.

"Okay, yes good idea." He replied throwing his shoes on and they unloaded the car together swiftly, simply placing it all at the bottom of the stairs to take up later.

"Alright time to relax kiddo." He smiled which Y/n returned and followed him through the house to where she presumed most of the guests were.

"GUESS WHO'S HERE." Y/D/N announced happily stepping aside out the way once they were in the conjoined kitchen and dining area which was big enough for a large gathering.

It was only a few seconds before Y/n mum had engulfed her in a hug which Y/n reciprocated, her siblings were a little less enthusiastic because that wasn't cool, but there was still love there as she hugged her younger sister and brother.

Y/n was caught up in greeting everybody seeing old faces, then she got to her closest neighbour who they had met up with alot more than any other of her neighbours. Both of them giving her a warm hug.

"Chaeyoung is here too."

Breaking the hug Y/n eyes were surprised, she hadn't seen Chaeyoung in years, longer than any of her other friends.

Right on cue their daughter returned to the room confused at all the commotion before the pair locked eyes across the room. Ofcourse surprise was evident then it morphed into a sweet smile, Y/n stood there in a trance casting her eyes upon her.

Her childhood friend was known as the quirky art kid throughout school, always had her own plan and didn't follow the crowd. She was always on the shorter side often referred to as cute like a little tiger cub. Her style in clothes was different to the trends, furthermore changing hairstyles numerous times throughout their time at school.

Slowly navigating her way through people Chaeyoung came face to face with Y/n. There was evident change in the girl, now woman. She still had her own fashion style along with the dainty frame, which made her adorable giving the instinct that she needed protected. In hindsight she never needed protection, despite her stature and aura she could always stand up for herself.

She had become more refined and mature. She had a blazer on with the sleeves rolled up slightly, a christmas shirt underneath. A similar colour skirt and thin black tights on with some ankle boots.

Y/n straight away noticed the tattoos on her arms, not exactly surprising considering how into art she is. It was clear in the years away from one another Chaeyoung had become a beautiful young woman, but when she smiled she still had that cute little tiger cub features and ofcourse she still had her dimples.

"Hey, long time no see....." Chaeyoung spoke bringing Y/n out her thoughts going for a hug. Y/n stood a good couple of inches taller then Chaeyoung as she wrapped her arms around her aswell

"Hi Chaeng, it really has...." Y/n breathed out contently and the affectionate hug brought everything flooding back for Y/n.

Y/n disconnected from the embrace casually as she could. "How have you been?" She asked, Chaeyoungs full attention on her.

"Good, really good. I got back here a couple of months ago and things are going well. I started a teaching job. What about you? Have you just got here?" Chaeyoung caught her up a little bit.

The pair kind of already forgetting about anyone else, absorbed by their own conversation straight away.

"Well it looks like you two have some catching up to do." Mrs Son interupted giving them a smile before walking off she gave Y/n subtle motherly like smile hooking arms with her husband and Y/n felt a little exposed wondering if she knew about her feelings for her daughter back then.

"I guess she is right...." Chaeng chuckled.

"Yeah.....I just travelled back today, but this time I have until the new year off. It's been interesting after graduating Uni I got a job in commercial property it was tough when I first started but now I've settled."

"How good are my odds in saying you're an art teacher? Where do you teach at?" Y/n said raising an expectant eyebrow.

Chaeyoung gave a light chuckle. "Hmmm I'd say two to one. You hit the nail on the head.....and I teach at our old middle school which brings back alot of memories."

"I think that might have been the only predictable thing about you. Oh and your height." Y/n joked with a cheeky grin, which earned a groan in protest.

"I tried my best to grow." She whined as the two naturally fell back into old habits. It gave that warmth and fuzzy feeling to Y/n, one hug and one conversation so far had ignited her feelings again, feelings which she thought had passed and got over once they went their separate ways and lost touch.

Y/n repressed those feelings for now, she just wanted to catch up with an old friend. "Should we go somewhere more comfortable? Its getting a little rowdy in here...." Y/n proposed and Chaeyoung nodded.

"Sure, have you eaten? You need a drink in your hand too!"

Y/n laughed shaking her head. "Am I a guest in my own home? Do you live here now?"

"Oh come on its not as if I wasn't over here multiple times a week. It's like my second home......" The shorter one beamed.

Home it certainly felt like home right now, a few memories of Chaeyoung making herself at home, coming over unannounced crossed her mind as she smiled to herself.

"So drink? Snack?" Chaeyoung raised her brows reiterating the question, bringing Y/n back to the present.

"Oh, yeah I could definitely eat and I think I will grab a beer too." Y/n quickly swiped a plate and threw some random food on her plate from the party food buffet her family had cooked. She returned to where Chaeng had been who was already waiting with a beer in hand to give to her while she had a glass of wine in hers.

"Thanks Chaengie."

The two left where the crowd was, settled in the living room which was quieter. Faint christmas music and conversation could be heard but it was a lot easier to converse.

"I see they have fallen right back into their old dynamic, its like they haven't been away." Mrs Son pointed out to Y/ns mum after watching the young pair leave the room.

"Indeed.....maybe they will figure it out this time." Y/M/N pondered, she always thought Chaeyoung was a good kid and how close hers and Y/n bond was, she was a little somber to find out they had lost touch once they headed of to university.

"Y/n is the only acceptable partner for her." Chaeyoungs dad shared his thoughts and his wife rolled her eyes.

"Do you hear yourself? Not everything is about status and background. I always said to Chaeyoung along as she was happy with fulfillment in a relationship I'd be okay with whoever she chose........but honestly I swear the way they look at each other........" Chaeyoungs mother wistful words carried to the other three.

"I just want them to be happy even if that means they don't end up together, it's clear they still care about each other even with the time apart." Y/M/N shared giving her friend a caring squeeze in the arm.

It was the first time Y/n sat down all evening letting out a calm sigh. "So I take it you have fully moved back home?" Y/n asked as she started to eat, her stomach had been shouting to be fed.

"Yeah, as much as it would be easy for my parents to contribute to buying or renting, I want to save enough so I can do it myself. Trying to be independent you know." The shorter one answered cooly.

"You have always been independent though, doing your own thing. It was almost like I was your sidekick." Y/n retorted comfortably.

"I guess." She said amused.

The duo for a while caught up in conversation, interested in what each other had been up to over their time at uni and now their respective jobs. New people they had come across in their life and ofcourse a few nostalgic moments reminiscing the past as teenagers.

"Do you want another drink?" Y/n gestured towards the ebony haireds empty glass.

"Yes, I will come with to see what selection of wine you guys have."

"Pfftt you really are a resident here huh." Y/n let out.

"Practically been over here numerous times since I've been back, you're parents missed me." Chaeyoung shrugged smugly leaving Y/n shaking her head fondly as they navigated their way back to the kitchen area and pantry.

A few people had filtered out and headed back to their homes, Y/n had grabbed another beer and was eyeing up some more food deliberating what to eat, her back was towards Chaeyoung.

Suddenky Chaeyoung started reading aloud in a different language comfortably and fluently as she read the back of the bottle for the description.

"What language is that!?" Y/n spoke impressed and confused at yet another new thing learnt about her old friend.

"Its Italian.I did a gap year in Italy. Not many better places to appreciate art and wine." Chaeyoung smirked as the Italian language effortlessly flowed out her mouth while Y/n stood there with a blank expression making Chaeyoung giggle.

"Come again? All I got was 'it's italian'. This time translate."

"I had a gap year in Italy. Basically a great place to appreciate art and wine." Chaeyoung clarified as her eyes sparkled talking about her favourite time in her life.

"Wow.....impressive." Y/n let out in adoration.

"I want to go back......you should come next time, I can show you around." Chaeyoung spoke with a sense of wishfullness and something else Y/n couldnt quite put her finger on, nevertheless it set a little flutter in her heart.

"I....would love too." Y/n gave a warm smile which Chaeyoung returned before going back to her task with the wine.

It was mere seconds later Y/n younger brother slithered into their presence but Y/n hadn't realised he was there yet. "Hey Chaeng.......I just want to tell you, you're so beautiful you could be a sculpture by michelangelo......and your eyes are like van gogh starry night.....mesmerising." he cheesed clearly a little under the influence.

From behind them, all that was heard was an obscene choking noise as Y/n held her hand over her mouth mid choke on her food, but simulataneously trying to hold in a laugh. Chaeyoung heard and tried to keep a straight face as she bit the inside of her cheek to stop herself, keeping composed she smiled at Y/n brother clearing her throat.

"That's sweet.....ummm maybe tell that to someone more your age yeah?"

He chuckled. "But I like older women."

Finally Y/n managed to composed herself and whipped around putting an arm around her 17 year old brothers shoulder, who was verging on being taller. "Come on champ, I'm sure those words would be much better use on a young lady at school." Whisking him away and pushing him out the room.

"I can't believe my brother just hit on you. Is this what happens when i'm not here?" Y/n said face palming to a rather amused Chaeyoung.

"He's been allowed a few drinks, leave the kid alone." She sipped on her wine. "Anyways I dislike that kind of courting shall we say."

Y/n eyed her sceptically before playfully scoffing. "Oh please don't kid yourself Chaeng. Miss poetry central over there, you secretly love all that romantic stuff and even better if they have a way with words." Raising a challenging brow at her leaning her hands on the counter opposite her and god Y/n thought she was so beautiful right now as she stood there in her casual demeanor but she saw the faint blush on her friends face.

Too soon the evening ended as guests dissipated leaving Y/n and her family. The night ended with some light teasing from her family about the young tattooed woman.

It only expanded her thoughts as she lay in her bed in her room, staring at the ceiling while her mind replayed scenes from the night along with memories from school just like an old cinematic reel. Her heart certainly only belonged to that one person.

Christmas day rolled around which was only 2 days after the party. With Y/n parents having a daughter in their twenties and two teenage children it wasn't a vastly early start on Christmas morning. There was no secrecy or magic anymore, Santa was long gone from this household. They all made their way downstairs sometime after 8am still clad in their matching pyjamas.

All of them gathered in the living room by the well decorated tree, handing gifts to one another. The morning was relaxed and filled with lighthearted jokes mixed with loving sentiment.

Then along came a ring of the doorbell. "I will get it." Haewon Y/n youngster sister chimed.

A few seconds later she came back. "Y/n it's for you." Gesturing behind her. Curious Y/n stood up and made her way to the door, the dog greeting the familiar person.

"Buddy come on! Go on, go in the living room." Y/n called him in a soft but commanding tone. He bounded back into the house obediently, wanting attention off Y/n before she coaxed him away and instructed the direction of her family.

"Morning Y/n, merry Christmas!" Chaeyoung greeted warmly.

"Morning Chaengie, merry Christmas right back!" She smiled fondly at the young woman wrapped up warm with her beanie on. "Thought this was your second home? You didn't just enter yourself?"

"I didn't think you would be into the whole hallmark matching families look these days." Chaeyoung countered eyeing Y/n still in her Christmas pyjamas.

Y/n ran a hand through her scraggly morning hair groaning at her friends words. "Fair enough......it was to appease my mother if you must know."

"Well this will please her even more." Chaeyoung said holding her arms out. Y/n took the tray which had a cover over it.

"Strawberry Santa's?" Y/n remembered to which Chaeyoung hummed.

"Thanks Chaeng."

"Oh!.......here this too." Handing over what looked like a wrapped tube, Y/n eyed it intrigued then looked back at Chaeyoung who had an unsure expression.

"You didn't have to.......shit I didn't think I'd see you this year, I'm sorry I didn't get you anything." Y/n felt completely guilty.

Chaeyoung shook her head. "Don't worry about it, I knew you were coming. It didn't really cost me anything but time......so......I guess if you could make it up to me by accompanying me out on Saturday?" Her tone sounding a little tentative. "You know just us two, catch up like old times." She added bunching her hands together fidgeting.

"Ofcourse anything." Y/n replied curling her lips up. "Want me to open this now?"

"Yeah......"

"Alright give me a second I will take this into the kitchen." Y/n said scooting off to place down the tray and hurried back to the front door.

Carefully Y/n tore open the cute Christmas wrapping, revealing a cardboard tube. Scanning it there was an open end which held a rolled up peace of thick canvas paper. Taking it out she undid the ribbon tie, delicately unrolled it revealing a painted picture of two people sitting on a giant rock at the beach. The background was minimalistic as the focus and detail was mainly on the two girls in the picture.

She focused on it the scene feeling vaguely familiar and then a light bulb went off in her head. "Is this......us?" She questioned in awe.

"Yes.....remember that school trip to the beach?"

Y/n laughed at the memory. "I do, that was the same day Dahyun got soaked by that wave. She was in a mood for the rest of the say until Tzuyu gave her a mini chocolate cake."

"Right! That day was nice and held good memories." Chaeyoung reminisced, Y/n gazed at her seeing something else in her face she couldn't quite put a finger on.

Y/n then stepped forward initiating a hug which Chaeyoung easily responded to, the touch of their bodies sparking Y/n heart to life again. "Thank you Chaeng, this is really sweet. I will frame it and put it up in my apartment."

"Really?" Chaeyoung sounded surprised.

The embrace ended and Y/n nodded assertively with a smile. "I will send you a pic once it's up."

"I would like that......anyways I will get going, gotta help my mum with the cooking. Tell your family merry Christmas for me." The shorter one voiced sincerely with a cute dimple smile which made Y/n melt on the spot.

"Will do and the same to you and your family. See you later Chaengie." Y/n said.

"Byee, see you around!"

Y/n closed the door feeling the chill now that her sunshine and warmth provider left. She shivered and shook her head
