Every human walks around with a certain kind of sadness. They may not wear it on their sleeves, but it's there if you look deep.

Chapter 1 - Another Year
Sighing, I walked in through the school doors, dreading another awful year of school. I got to school a few minutes late so that I wouldn't have to wait for the doors to open. Even though I absolutely hated being at home, I despised being at school more.
I groaned as I joined in the long line to get class schedules. It's such a pain to wait in long lines, especially this one. The line this year is so much longer than the line from last year. I guess there's more freshman this year than there was last year.
My eyes lit up as I caught a glimpse of Gene, Sasha, and Zenix. Even though people say that they're bad influences, I still hung out with them. They're the only ones who would really talk to me.
"Gene!" I yelled, squeezing my way through the crowd of people.
"(Y/N)," He smirked, leaning back on the brick wall, "Glad you could join us. Do you have your class schedule?"
"Actually, no. The line is just so long that I thought I could hang out with you guys until it dies down a bit."
Gene huffed, pushing himself off of the wall. "Well, you don't have to wait in line if you don't want to." My eyebrows furrowed in confusing but Gene just rolled in eyes, taking my wrist and walking over to the class schedule desk. "She/He needs a schedule," Gene spoke, acting annoyed.
"O-Oh, sorry Gene!" The man who was working the desk apologized. "What's your name?"
"(Y/N) (L/N)."
After a few moments, the man pulled out a folder, grabbing a piece of paper from inside it. "Here you go." Gene took the paper from the man and dragged me away before I could thank him.
"You could have thanked him," I scolded Gene.
I wasn't afraid of Gene like some other people in Phoenix Drop High. The reason being, I've known him for quite a while now. He dated my sister for a few months and ever since I kind of felt like he was the brother I never had. Correction- The brother I wish I had.
"Thank him? Psh, he doesn't deserve to be thanked with how slow he's working today," Gene retorted. "Anyway, let's compare schedules." Even though Gene and I only had one class together, I was happy nonetheless.
"Why are you placed into the werewolf class?"
"What?" I questioned him, leaning over to look at my schedule, "I'm in the werewolf class?"
"Is there something you're not telling me (Y/N)?" He chuckled, raising an eyebrow.
"I'm not a dog, Gene," I sneered.
"Your sister sure was."
"Gene!" I screeched, catching everyone's attention.
"I'm just kidding," he laughed, "Now go to homeroom... unless you want to skip with us."
"You know I don't do that," I sighed, "I actually need a good job some day."
"Yeah, yeah," Gene said, walking back over to Sasha and Zenix, "Go on before I drag you with us."
I obliged and made my way to the home room. Room 127? Okay then. My next class is also in there... ugh chemistry.

As I was making my way to the park after school, I ran into Zenix who told me that he lost a bet, so he had to buy snacks at the convenience store. "So, you and Gene," Zenix snickered.
I looked at him confusingly, "What about Gene and I?"
"Are you two together or something?" He asked, raising his voice.
"No, we're not, and don't start screaming again," I huffed, looking the other way. Zenix was always the one to yell, even if there wasn't a point to it. After a while, I grew used to his screaming but it bothered me a bit because it caught a bunch of attention.
"Shut up! I can yell if I want to!" He shouted as we approached Gene and Sasha.
"Don't tell (Y/N) to shut up," Gene spoke, moving his black hair out of his face.
"Then what should I do!" He yelled at Gene.
Gene rolled his eyes at Zenix's behavior and made his way over to me. "Ignore him, he's just mad that he had to go to the convenience store to buy food." I heard Zenix growl at him but he stopped as soon as Gene looked back, glaring at him. "What are you doing here? Yesterday you told me that your dad wanted you to go home early," Gene pointed out.
My heart sank when Gene mentioned my dad. I'll just say that my dad and I don't have the best relationship. "You know that I don't want to see him," I said, walking over to Sasha and sitting next to her.
Gene sniggered, sitting down on the blanket next to me. "So you're going to defy your father's rules just to hang out with us?"
"It's better than eating dinner with him," I confessed while grabbing a chip bag that Zenix bought.
"Hey, that was mine!" Zenix complained.
"We can share-"
"Sharing is for people who actually care and frankly, I don't care." Zenix glared at me and swiped the chip bag away from me. (A/N: Swiper no swiping! ...I'm sorry)
I rolled my eyes and grabbed another pack of chips before leaning back on the hill behind us. "Now, that was mine but I'll let you have it," Gene gave me a small smile.
"Than-"
"Shadow Knights!" I heard a voice squeak from ahead of us. Turning my head, my gaze met a guy with black hair covering one of his blue eyes.
"Ah, it's Emo Kid again," Gene groaned beside me, draping one of his hands over his eyes, "Why don't you go scurry off somewhere?"
"I want to be a part of the Shadow Knights!" The 'Emo Kid' said, determination in his eyes. (A/N: I swear you Undertale fans, don't you dare say it...)
"You're not going to, now go away," Gene responded, obviously annoyed.
"Please just listen to me, I can do everything! I'm as evil as you guys!" He yelled. I have to admit, the person did intrigue me for some reason.
"We're not accepting any freshman this year so you can stop trying," Gene retorted, uncovering his eyes.
"You have a freshman right next to you, don't you?" 'Emo Kid' argued.
Gene glanced over at me and laughed, making my cheeks pink. "If I didn't know (Y/N), I would think she/he is a freshman too considering how young she/he looks but no, (Y/N) is a sophomore."
The freshman seemed to be at a loss for words, not sure what to exactly say. I heard Sasha start to laugh, then start standing up. "I think that we should go to the bridge now," Sasha finally spoke, walking in the direction of the bridge.
"Fine with me," Gene replied, getting up to follow her.
"Fine!" Zenix screeched, "Leave me to grab the snacks!"
I sighed, standing up also. "I'll help you Zenix."
After a few seconds, I saw the freshman start to walk away, leaving in the other direction. "Hey, freshman!" I stopped him.
The boy turned around, not really happy. "What?" He asked bitterly.
"What's your name?"
"Zane," He answered me before resuming to walk away.
"Zane," I murmured, a smile growing on my face, "I'll remember that."
