Carol walked over to the cage slowly. Her expression was just insanity. She was crazy for all Hannah knew, and that was just another reason to escape this place.
"Tired? Confused? Don't worry, that'll be over soon." Carol said, smirking evilly.
Elly seemed to be stirring, and sat up, rubbing her eyes.
"What happened?" She asked.
Hannah moved over next to Elly. "Just stay calm. Whatever they say, don't listen. Because I'm not going to let anything happen to you, or any of our friends."
Elly, alerted by this, looked around. She took in her surroundings, and saw Carol standing there, smirking. A chill ran down the fourteen year old's spine.
"I guess you heard my plan, too. Just let me catch up for this young woman." Carol said. "You see, in this large community, we obviously don't have enough food. With the undead out there, eating anything that moves, killing an animal is rare. So we take the weakest here and recycle them to make the rest of us stronger."
At every word, Elly's eyes widened. Carol took enjoyment to see the fear grow in the kid's eyes. She suddenly snapped her fingers, and walked away. The men, at the snap, scurried around the room, grabbing different tools and running into another room. One man walked over.
"Just stay here," He said. "We're just getting your room ready." And followed the others into the room. The door closed, and the room grew silent.
"What do we do?" Elly said. Her voice showed that she was battling tears.
"It's going to be okay," Hannah said. "We're going to get out of here." Hannah stood up and walked to the metal bar door. "Think we can break it open?"
"I don't think so," Elly said. "It's metal, and it's obviously not old. We'd need a tool to get out."
"Think Hannah, think." Hannah muttered. She looked around their cell. Her eyes landed on a grate on the wall. She walked over to the grate, followed by Elly.
Hannah put her hands through the holes on the grate, and pulled. Elly helped. They pulled at the metal grate, but it was no use. It was too strong, and they had nothing to take the screws out with.
The door opened, and out came one of the men in white. He walked over to them, and held out keys.
"Promise you'll be good?" He taunted.
"I promise you nothing, you piece of sh*t." Hannah cursed at him. The man didn't flinch at the icy tone.
He put the keys into the lock, and opened the door.
"Now, uh, the younger one." He said, pointing at Elly. She whimpered.
"Why are you taking a little girl? Take me instead!" Hannah stood up.
"I have to take the 'little girl' because she's been longest with a bite wound. Now, come on." He said, getting annoyed.
Elly hesitantly stood up. Hannah hugged her, and let her walk out.
The man took Elly by the arm, while trying to lock the door again. But, before he did, Elly took her free hand and punched him in the face. The man dropped the keys and let go of her to hold his face.
With this chance, Hannah ran out the bar door, grabbed Elly, and ran to the door. She tried opening it, but it was locked.
Elly tapper her shoulder. She held up a card. Hannah smiled and took the card and showed it to the scanner. The door opened.
A hand grabbed Hannah's hair before they could walk out. She screeched.
"Your not going anywhere!" Said the man's voice.
"Let go you jerk!" Elly said, and kicked the man's groin. He doubled over in pain, and the two girls ran up the stairs.
They ran up the stairs, hearing the men chasing after them. They didn't stop until they saw a familiar door. Opening the door, the two ran down the halls.
"Where do you think the other three are?" Elly asked Hannah.
"I don't know. We'll just keep running until we'll either find them or get those men off our tail." Hannah replied.
Suddenly, the hallways turned red, and alarms started to blare. Then white men flooded into the hallways, and the two blondes ran.
Doors opened, and people came out into the hallways. They spotted Lewis, Duncan, Liam, Kim, and Kaeyi coming out into the hallway.
"Guys!" Hannah yelled.
"Hannah! Elly!" Duncan yelled in surprise.
"Hannah?!" Kim said.
"We have to run!" Hannah yelled. She and Elly ran, followed by the others.
"Where are we going? The exit's that way!" Kim yelled, pointed behind them.
"There has to be another way out of here! Let's go!" Elly said.
The now group of seven ran down the halls, men in white following.
The group took a turn, and there were construction signs everywhere.
"What is this?" Liam asked.
"They were expanding this place. I think they found an old mine shaft or something, and there are old elevators, too." Kim explained.
"Maybe that'll be our way out." Elly suggested.
The group ran down the halls covered in construction signs. As they ran, the ground turned to dirt, and there were more hazards to get around. They soon came to a dead end, with only an elevator, the white men catching up to them.
"What do we do?! We're trapped!" Kaeyi said. It was the first time she spoke since she learned of Martyn's death.
"We'll have to take the elevator." Lewis said. He opened the old elevator door, and the group piled in. Duncan pressed a button, and the doors closed, and the elevator started to go down.
"Yeah! We did it!" Kim said. "Now, what were we running from?"
"Those guys," Hannah said. "Were going to kill us. All of us. Me and Elly for research, all of you for food. Those guys are sick, and Carol is twisted in the head!"
Everyone was shocked by this news.
"I ate here!" Kim said.
"I did too!" Kaeyi added.
"I think I'm going to puke." Kim said, putting a hand over her mouth and one on her stomach.
"Calm down, we're going to be al-" Lewis began to say, but was cut off by the elevator jerking.
"What was that?" Liam asked.
Before anyone could answer, the elevator jerked again, and they started to fall. Everyone screamed, then the elevator crashed into the ground below.
***
Hannah opened her eyes a second time, the aching in her body tens time worse. She groaned and sat up, looking around.
Everyone else was awake or getting awake. Many had injuries, like a gash on the head or leg, or just scratches and bruises. The elevator was toast, all the walls broken, and the ceiling on the ground.
Everyone was up and trying to regain their senses, when someone screeched in terror. They all looked to where Elly was standing, hand over mouth, and eyes wide. They all followed her gaze, and they all gasped, too.
It was Lewis. He just barely breathing, and that was because a piece of metal bar stuck through his abdomen. The piece went right through his body from the back and ended straight through his stomach. He groaned in pain.
"Oh my god," Hannah said. "Lewis!" She ran over to his side, and held his hand in hers.
"We have to get him off!" Hannah said.
"How? He's stuck on there!" Duncan said.
"I don't care! We have to get him off!" Hannah argued.
Sound from above made everyone look up. The men in white were working their way down to where the group was. They didn't have much time.
"Come on!" Hannah said. She grabbed Lewis' shoulders and tried to pull him off. Kim, Duncan, and Liam tried to help, but it only ended in Lewis' screams of pain and getting nowhere at all.
"Stop! Stop!" Lewis yelled.
"We're going to get you off. It's going to be okay." Hannah said. By now, she had tears running down her face.
"No," Lewis said, weakly. "Go. Just stop and go."
"I'm not leaving you!" Hannah argued.
"Just go!" Lewis said, louder. "I'll feel better if you left, and are safe."
Hannah contemplated this, tears running down her face.
"We'll have to go soon," Liam said. "The men are coming." The men got closer and closer as each second passed.
"Okay," Hannah said, barely above a whisper. She bent down and lightly kissed Lewis on the lips. "I love you, remember that."
"I love you, too," Lewis replied. The color had totally drained from his face, and his heart beat and breath has slowed down too far.
"We have to go!" Kaeyi said. The men in white had climbed down, and were making their way towards the group.
Hannah slowly stood up, and ran away with the group down the mine shaft, tears running down her face.
