everyone was tired of how rough dean was being, and goldberg had enough. he started skating, saying something about how he'd take care of him, which made arabella scoff in disbelief.
everyone started to get together and argue, and arabella was currently just standing on the side, not wanting to start any problems. she was usually one of the best arguers, but she didn't want to show that side on her first time meeting these people. she got tired of standing and sat against the boards, laughing at everyone's arguments.
she wasn't able to enjoy the fights anymore because bombay blew his whistle, telling everyone to freeze. the arguments quickly stopped, and they all turned to face him. arabella knew he was going to start his long speech, so she stayed sitting. "we didn't come here to fight. we came here to play hockey!"
"yawn." arabella rolled her eyes.
bombay continued, "we're team u.s.a., you represent your country."
the man beside bombay, (what was his name?), agreed with coach, which made arabella raise an eyebrow. but bombay kept talking, and arabella thought she was going to die of boredom. what a great first meeting this is. "now i want you-"
the man cut bombay off, finishing his sentence. "to be all that you can be! right?"
bombay obviously was starting to get annoyed, but he didn't say anything. arabella wondered how long he could last. the man continued to talk, looking at bombay every few seconds. "you gotta raise yourself up, guys! you got-"
once he saw bombay's expression, he paused, which made everyone laugh a little. coach took his silence to state that they were going to have a scrimmage, and when he was about to blow his whistle, the other man blew it for him.
that was obviously bombay's breaking point, as he looked at the man with annoyance. he obviously got the message, saying he had to leave because he had an appointment with miss mackay, who was apparently the teams tutor.
as he was walking away, coach called him back. "don?"
"don? what kinda name is that?" arabella mumbled to herself. she was still sitting on the floor, so everyone else was behind her.
bombay took don's whistle, saying he would get it back after the season ended. bombay then told the ducks to show them what they got, then blew the whistle.
arabella let out a groan. she didn't want to get up yet. "can i just sit here? i'll be a ref."
coach shook his head, so arabella stood up and pretended to call things, like a ref did. she deepened her voice and started pointing at people. "number 44! penalty for not paying the 2 dollars you owe me! 96! penalty for being coach's favorite!"
charlie turned around and stuck his tongue out at her as a joke, and she did the same action back, laughing to herself.
bombay called arabella's name and told her to get on the bench already, seeing as they already had the first line. dwayne and jesse were against each other at the faceoff, and dwayne smiled at jesse.
poor boy.
"great day for hockey, ain't it?" he asked with enthusiasm.
jesse, being the sarcastic person he is, replied back with fake happiness. "sure is, cowboy!"
jesse got what was coming to him when dwayne skated through him, making jesse do a somersault. still on the bench, arabella started laughing, and what happened next made her laugh even more. dwayne had passed the puck to luis, who glided past everyone. he was about to score, but he ran into goldberg and the net because he couldn't stop.
arabella heard luis thank goldberg for breaking his fall, and goldberg just replied with 'anytime.' it was obvious that the new players were really good. whenever they tried to get a shot on goal, julie stopped it. at one point, arabella even cheered for julie, but the look coach gave her made her stop.
she continued a minute later when julie stopped another puck that was shot. "i love you julie!"
when the ducks players came to the bench for water, coach told arabella to get out there and play left wing, her favorite spot. he had a short conversation with averman about training in the off season, and averman took his helmet off. "you know, i knew we forgot something."
the only duck that scored so far was adam, and arabella wanted to kiss him. someone needed to show the other players that they were good.
deciding to show her love, she screamed, "i love you adam!". she got a few looks, seeing kenny turn around confusedly, but she just watched the scrimmage continue.
arabella watched as dean slammed fulton into the wall, and arabella skated over to him to help him up. she then watched as dean pushed guy and averman down. arabella sighed, giving fulton a hand before turning to dean. "stop being a dick, we're on the same team, you know."
he looked a bit taken aback, but arabella just skated off. she ended up skating with the puck, dodging the other players and defense. that part was easy, in her opinion. she just had to get past julie. she fake deked and shot in the upper right corner of the net, and julie just barely missed it.
she cheered before turning to julie. "hi, i'm arabella, and i literally love you so much."
julie smiled and laughed at how upfront she was about it. "hi arabella, i'm julie. and thank you, i love you too."
arabella blew her a kiss and waved goodbye as she went back to the faceoff circle. a few minutes later, fulton had the puck, and he went to score. arabella immediately stopped where she was and laid on the floor just in case he didn't make it, and it's a good thing she did.
he paused, and everyone went to go to the boards, trying to steer clear off the puck. dean stayed there for a second before he saw fulton's shot, and he ducked away just in time. however, don walked back into the rink and hadn't seen the puck coming, and it hit him right in the forehead.
"what an idiot." arabella slightly laughed as she got up, seeing kenny stand right next to her. he was holding a hand out for her, which made her cheeks slightly red. she tried to convince herself it was because she was right next to the cold ice a second ago, but she knew that was a lie.
she grabbed it, and he helped her get up. "thanks kenny."
"no problem. i was confused why you were on the ground at first, but then i saw his shot and realized."
arabella let out a small laugh. "he has kind of a wild shot. it's better to be safe than end up like don or whatever over there."
kenny laughed, then the two skated over to where the rest of the team was circled around don. a lady, who arabella figured must've been miss mackay, was trying to get him conscious again. bombay had grabbed some smelling salt to wake him up, and that's when they saw his eyes open slightly.
miss mackay asked if he was alright, and he looked confused. "oh, uh, i'll have the cheeseburgers, fries, and a chocolate shake please."
everyone laughed, and arabella smiled at how stupid it was. miss mackay stood up, then introduced herself. "i'm michele mackay, their tutor."
coach bombay smiled and introduced himself in a way arabella thought was a little stupid. "hi, i'm coach bombay. their coach."
at the sound of tutor, everyone started to get mad. adam was the first to express his dislike about it. "who said we need a tutor?"
everyone started agreeing, and dean was the next person to state his dislike. "i don't need no school."
"are you sure about that?" arabella guessed he probably wasn't the smartest person, but she didn't want him to attack her, so she said it quietly. kenny, who was right next to her still, laughed.
goldberg stepped up behind miss mackay and threw an arm around her. "miss mackay, we're america's team here. shouldn't we just be concentrating on hockey? may i suggest optional attendance?"
everyone agreed to that statement, but arabella thought it was kind of stupid. miss mackay surprised arabella when she said the next sentence, but then laughed. "well, that's not a bad idea! school will be optional. however, should you not attend, you will not be able to eligible to play."
everyone groaned at this, but finally stopped complaining. as they went to the locker rooms to change into their regular clothes and out of their gear, she was walking behind dean and averman. averman was standing next to dean, who was obviously taller. and scarier looking.
"is that a tattoo? is it real?" averman asked, and arabella knew he was going to get murdered.
"get away from me."
"yes sir." averman walked faster to get away from dean after dean barked at him.
when she was walking, fulton called her name. he was standing with jesse and guy, who were grinning. "come on, we're gonna try something!"
arabella followed them until they walked to the zamboni, and she quickly understood. "i call driving it!"
she ran to it and took the seat, trying to figure out how to start it while the other three were climbing on. "hang out, i got this."
apparently, she hadn't gotten it.
she had driven straight into the boards, crashing through. they thought it was fun, and they were all cheering, until they saw bombay and miss mackay standing on the ice, looking right at them.
"oh shit," arabella mumbled, before raising her voice. "it was their idea!"
