Therapy with a toddler was hard. That was the conclusion Hailey and Jay came to after Ava's second session. The little girl was talking through some hard stuff as she played with the therapist and the toys in the office, and she left both sessions in hysterics. Then she'd be clingy and unsettled the rest of the day.
Hailey was trying to take a shower the evening of Ava's second session when she heard the door handle turn, but with it locked, nothing happened.
"HAIWEY!" Ava started banging on the door and Hailey sighed.
"Ava, baby, go get Jay. I'll be out in a minute!" She called out, but Ava didn't like that. She hit the door again and screamed out for her with a sob.
Hailey tried to hurry, wondering what had her sister so upset. Jay found Ava sitting against their bathroom door, wailing into her stuffed rabbit.
"It's time for your bath, Ava," he said, crouching down beside her.
"Want Haiwey!" She cried, moving away from Jay even though it hurt her ribs.
He'd been about to put her in the bath when she ran off looking for Hailey, crying. He didn't know why she was upset, she knew the routine and liked baths.
"Jay, I'm almost done!" Hailey called out, getting the last of her body wash rinsed off then getting out of the shower. She dried herself off and threw on some underwear and one of Jay's tshirts before she opened the door.
Ava scrambled towards her, hysterical, and clung to her once Hailey had her up in her arms. Even her thumb wasn't helping her calm down.
"What happened?!" Hailey asked, alarmed, swaying with Ava.
"No idea. I was about to get her in the bath and she flipped out, hence the lack of her shirt. She wanted nothing to do with me," He was confused as well, Ava had really started to warm up to Jay.
"Weird. Ava, baby, can you try and calm down for me?" Hailey went to move Ava's hair from her face, but she flinched away, which she hadn't been doing as much.
It took half an hour to settle her enough to talk to them. And even then, she wouldn't look at them.
"Haiwey do baf," she sniffled. "Not Jay, Haiwey tonight. Pease? I'm sowwy I was bad, I just wanted Haiwey do it. No owies."
"Ave, what do you mean no owies?" Hailey asked, scared. Surely she hadn't been sexually abused?!
"No owies in my eyes in the baf. Dad would do that, talked about it today. I don't want that, men do that."
Oh thank goodness, they didn't go where they thought that was going. Her dad purposely getting soap in her eyes was bad, and he'd probably pushed her into the tub a few times, but it was definitely better than the alternative.
"Ava, I would never do that to you on purpose," Jay told her. "And if it ever happens on accident, I'll help you get the soap out of your eyes as fast as possible."
Ava looked over at him and whimpered but nodded. She still just wanted her sister to do her bath that night. It was still weird to her that Jay was so nice to her. The only man she'd ever been around was her father, who had barely been kind. He hit her almost everyday. She thought that's how all guys were.
"Do you want me to give you a bath?" Hailey broke her from her thoughts and she nodded slowly.
"I'm sowwy," she felt bad, Jay looked sad.
"It's okay, kiddo. I'm not upset, I promise. You're okay, you aren't in trouble," he smiled at her and she smiled a little back but stayed tucked into Hailey's arms.
Hailey got her bathed and into her pajamas then they ate ice cream and watched a movie before bed. Ava cried herself to sleep that night, breaking their hearts. She didn't want the nightmares so she didn't want to sleep, but she was absolutely exhausted. They knew it would be a long night, and it was.
Ava woke up 4 different times, screaming and crying. So they were all still asleep at 10:00 when there was a knock on the door, effectively waking Ava and Jay. He took Ava to the door with him, immediately regretting it when he saw the team standing there. Crap.
"Uh, hey," he coughed out, hoping Hailey would wake up. Ava was scared.
"Uh, hey yourself, man. What's with the kid? And why are you at Upton's house?" Ruzek asked.
"It's a long story. Ave, go get Hailey for me," Jay turned and set the shaking toddler on the stairs. Ava eyed the team warily then hurried back upstairs to find her sister.
"Haiwey, wake up," she shook her a little and Hailey sat up.
"What's wrong?" She asked, seeing how anxious Ava looked.
"People hewe. Jay saida come get you," Hailey hurried out of bed and put a bra and some shorts on under her shirt, then scooped Ava up.
"Hold up, we need to change you," Hailey went to Ava's room and got her out of her wet diaper and into an "up", then headed downstairs, tensing when she heard the voices of their team.
"She's definitely yours. How'd you keep your kid a secret for a little over a year?" Kim smiled, seeing that Ava was a carbon copy of her sister.
"Close. She's my sister, but she's in my custody now. Working on making it both of our custody," Jay's eyes nearly fell out of his head when he heard her say that.
"We're doing this now?" He squeaked out.
"Might as well, come sit down, I need to get her some Tylenol and food," Hailey motioned the team to the living room as she went into the kitchen.
They looked at each other and went to sit down while Hailey got Ava settled. "Who awe they?" She asked, not sure of wanting to be put down.
"They're the people Jay and I work with, and they're all really nice, I promise. Jay, and I are detectives, and they are police officers. They're not going to hurt you," Hailey tried to ease Ava's anxiety, but it didn't work well. Ava was nervous, but she let herself be placed in the booster at the table and took her Tylenol before eating some fruit.
"You can call one of us over if you need something, okay," Hailey waited for a nod and kissed Ava's head before going into the living room.
"She's settled, sorta, for now. Ask away," Hailey sat with Jay and waited for the questions to begin.
"Are y'all dating?" Kim asked.
"Nope. We're married, have been for 5 years," Hailey and Jay both laughed when their friends' jaws dropped.
"I'm sorry, married?!" Adam yelled, and Ava burst into tears.
"Please don't yell, it scares Ava, and I don't like it," Hailey requested as Jay went to go calm Ava down. She saw him lift her up and start swaying as Ava's thumb made it's way into her mouth.
"Sorry. Y'all are married? And never thought to tell anyone?" He asked again, quieter.
"Yup. Platt and Voight know, and both of our previous sergeants, but that's it in the CPD. Now y'all know, but please don't make it public knowledge. It's not that we were purposefully keeping it a secret, we just didn't say anything when I worked that first case with y'all, and now here we are," Hailey shrugged.
It took their 3 friends a good 10 minutes to get over their initial shock. Then the questions about Ava began.
"How long has she lived here? How old is she?" Kevin wondered.
"She just turned 4, and this is her 15th day here, but we met her 19 days ago. It was the day we both left work without saying anything. That was when Hailey got the call about her," Jay supplied.
They spent an hour talking about what happened, Hailey revealing her horrible childhood, and Ava even came over and climbed into Jay's lap, playing with his fingers while everyone talked. The two men made her nervous, and she wasn't super interested in their conversation, but she didn't want to be anywhere alone with strangers in the house.
Eventually, she heard her name and turned to look at Hailey, curious. "Can you say hi to our friends, Aves?" Ava nodded slowly and whispered a quiet "hi" but made no move to leave Jay's lap.
The three friends tried to talk to Ava, but she wasn't super into it, clearly shy. Everyone left when Jay's stomach audibly growled. He and Hailey needed food and to do something somewhat productive with the remainder of the day.
Ava played alone while they ate, then they got ready and went grocery shopping for the coming week. Ava fell asleep on the way home and stayed asleep when Hailey transferred her from her car seat to the couch, but woke up shortly after because she was hungry. Once she was fed, they took her on a walk, gave her a bath, and watched a movie until dinner, which was pizza. Compared to the night before, it was an incredible night, but there was a storm brewing for the next day.
