You woke up with a groan, not wanting to leave the comfort of your own bed. You were the only runner getting up because Alby wanted you to run the maze with him that morning. You swing your legs over the bed, and stand up with a frown. You were thinking about everything that had happened yesterday, and the thought brought tears to your eyes, but you didn't let them fall.
You stood up, and slowly walked out the door, wanting to prolong the inevitable for as long as possible. You walked down the stairs, and out of the homestead towards the kitchens where you were supposed to meet Alby. You were surprised when you got to the kitchens because not only was Alby there, but the greenie was to.
"Hey (Y/n)," Alby greets you.
"G'morning," Newt says while waving.
You went to sit down at the table with them, and you gave Alby a weird look. He just gave you a soft smile, and did something that surprised you even more. He got up, and walked out of the kitchens, leaving you with Newt. You looked up at the greenie and said, "Good morning. What are you doing up so early?"
"Thomas woke me up. Told me to meet you here for some reason," Newt tells you, and a light blush comes to your cheeks. The others never, and you mean never, let you be alone with another boy.
There was a minute of silence between you two before you spoke up. "Thank you. For yesterday I mean. I might of run into the maze again if you hadn't been there," you tell him with a soft smile.
"Ya I'm sorry about that," he tells you in a sincere tone. You look up at him, and you stare into each other's eyes. You smile a little before looking back down at your lap, wondering what you were supposed to do now. You didn't get to decide because Alby came back through the door.
"Time to go (Y/n)," he tells you, and you walk out of the kitchens, the greenie following right behind you. All three of you walk up to the maze doors, and Thomas is there waiting for you guys.
"Hey Thomas," you say with a smile. He returns it, and walks over to Alby to talk with him. You turn around and your standing right in front of Newt.
"Be careful out there," he mumbles while looking directly at you. You nod at him with a soft smile, and wrap your arms around him. He seems startled at first, but eventually he returns the gesture, holding you to his body. You rest your cheek on his chest, and you take a deep breath, feeling content in that moment.
You hear the doors rumble to life, and you look up at Newt, and step out of his arms. Quickly before you lose your nerve, you plant a quick kiss on his cheek, and without looking at his reaction you run into the maze with Alby.
Your blushing like crazy while you run, and your hoping Alby thinks it's from the heat. You guys run through the maze with no problems for about two hours, but just like yesterday, luck is not on your side. You guys turn a corner, and you stumble to a halt when you see a dead griever. At first you guys glance at each other to make sure your not just hallucinating, but eventually you walk towards it.
"What the shuck," you whisper as you get closer to its creepy legs. It's body is turned over, and it's legs are curled towards its stomach. Alby is standing right next to you, observing the creature in front of you when suddenly the monster jumps up. You don't have time to react as it stabs its needle like leg through Albys arm. It scurries away right afterwards, and your left with your mouth hanging open.
"No," you scream as you run over to Alby who's leaning against the wall. He's gripping his arm tightly, and your having flashbacks of yesterday. You start shanking, and wheezing, not wanting to lose another friend while running. As you wrap his arm, he passes out, and you remember what Ben did yesterday.
You tie off the bandage, and grab your knife. Your holding it backwards by the handle, getting ready to ram it into his head before he has the chance to run off. Just as his eyes start to flutter open, you smash the handle into the side of his head. His eyes roll back, and he goes back to sleep.
You want to cry because of what you just did to your friend, but you don't let your tears fall as you hoist Alby onto your back. It wasn't very easy considering your about three fourths his size, and half his weight, but your able to wrap his arms around your neck, and drag him back to the Glade.
You just hope you can get back in time with the extra weight on your back, or your both gonna be griever food.
Newts POV
I'm working in the fields with Thomas and Zart when it starts raining. All the boys run over to the kitchens or the council hall, not wanting to get soaked. I look towards the doors, waiting for (Y/n) to come running through them. After a few hours of just sitting there worrying, I walk up to Thomas who's leaning against a pole of the little pavilion were standing underneath.
"They should be back by now," I tell him, and he glances at me with a sad expression. "We need to go out there and find them. What if they don't make it?" I ask when he doesn't respond.
"Their gonna make it," he says, but he sounds like he's telling himself more than he's telling me.
"Ya and how do you know that," I ask in an annoyed tone, wishing he would send someone in after them.
"There gonna make it," he says in a sincere tone as he looks at my worried face. My face has a sad expression on it as a give him a small nod. I walk back over to the side of the pavilion, and sit down facing the doors, waiting for (Y/n) to come back through the doors with Alby.
Time skip
Once it stops raining, all of the boys gather at the North entrance, waiting for their two friends to return.
"Guys can we send someone in after them," I ask, starting to feel kinda of desperate at this point.
"We cant. It's against the rules. They either make it back or they don't," the boy with the scary eyebrows, who's name happens to be Gally, says.
I look over at Thomas to see his reaction, but he just speaks up when he sees me looking at him. "Can't risk losing anyone else," he tells me, but I can see that even he wants to go find (Y/n) and Alby.
Suddenly the doors rumble to life, and they start closing slowly.
"Oh no," Chuck mumbles, and all of the boys seem to tense up. My breathing becomes heavy, wondering where they are, but my question is answered when I see a figure come around the corner.
"There," I shout while pointing towards (Y/n).
"Wait somethings wrong," Thomas says, and that's when I realize a large figure is on (Y/n)s back. She's stumbling towards us, but the doors are closing faster than she can walk.
"Come on (Y/n) you can do it," Chuck screams, and then all of the Gladers start cheering her on.
"Hurry up (Y/n)," Jeff.
"Your almost there," Minho.
Suddenly she stumbles, and falls forward to the ground. She scrambles back to her feet, and grabs Albys ankles, dragging him to the doors. The boys are still cheering her on, when I hear Thomas say, "There not gonna make it."
I can see (Y/n)s pained expression on her face as she pulls Albys body closer to the doors, and the Gladers shouts of encouragement are drowned out by the ringing in my ears.
The doors are feet from closing, and I can tell their not going to make it. Without really thinking, I run in between the closing maze doors. Thomas reaches out to grab my arm, but his fingers slip on my shirt sleeve. I turn to my side, and shuffle through the doors. I jump through the other side of the doors before I get crushed, and the doors close right behind me with a loud boom.
I look at the doors for a second before turning around and looking at (Y/n). She's laying down next to Albys body, and panting. She doesn't seem to notice I'm here yet, so I crawl over to her to make sure she's ok.
"(Y/n) what happened," I ask, and her eyes snap open and focus on my face.
She gasps, and jumps away from me so her back is against the wall. Her hands go up to her face, covering her mouth and nose. "No. No no no no no no no no no," she mumbles while I look at her.
"What are you doing here," she shouts and stands up while bringing her hands away from her face. I stand up and take a few steps towards her.
"You were gonna be trapped in here," I tell her as I come a little closer.
"No. No you shouldn't have come here. You should have stayed in the glade. You were safe there," she says in an angry voice, but she also sounds like she's holding back tears.
"(Y/n) it's gonna be fine," I tell her as I walk closer to her, so now I'm standing right in front of her. "It's gonna be fi-" but I'm cut off by her grabbing my shirt and spinning us around and her shoving me against the wall.
"It's not gonna be fine!" She shouts at me. "You shouldn't have come in here! No one survives a night in the maze, ok! You should have just left us! I've already lost my best friend in here, and now Ally's probably gonna die! I can't lose anyone else!" Slowly I see the anger fade out of her eyes, and after a minute, her grip on my shirt loosens, and she's just resting her hands on my chest. She leans her head on my shoulder, and she whispers, "I can't lose anyone else," in a broken sounding voice. That's when I realize something.
I never thought that she would think it was her fault if I died out here with her. She blames herself for Bens death because she was the one who couldn't find him after he got stung. And when she came around the corner carrying Alby on her back, it never occurred to me that, again, she was the one who was there with him, so if he died, she would blame herself again. Now I'm stuck in the maze with her, and she's under the pressure of keeping me and herself alive, because she doesn't want to lose another friend on her watch.
I wrap my arms around the small of her back, and gently hold her to me. I lean my head down on the top of hers, and mumble sweet things into her hair. "I'm sorry. It's gonna be ok. Were gonna make it out of this. I'm sorry." I just repeat these little things to her until her tears turn to sniffles, and she pulls away from me.
She wipes her eyes, and says, "Ok. We need to find somewhere to hide Alby," she states. I nod and start to look around. I look over at a wall covered in ivy, and I see a shadow underneath the blanket of vines where the floor meets the wall. I walk over, and find a small section of the wall has been taken out. It's just big enough to fit one person in it.
"Hey (Y/n) I think I found something," I call to her, and she runs towards me from around the corner. She looks at the small compartment, and nods. She stands up, and walks over to Alby. I walk up on his other side, and together, we drag him over to the section.
Were able to shove him in, and we cover the wall back up with ivy. Suddenly I hear a strange whirring noise, and I look over to see a terrified expression on (Y/n)s face. She jumps up, and grabs my arm and pulls me around the corner. She presses her back flat against the wall, and I copy her. She's breathing heavy, and shaking a little.
"Ok. When I tell you, your going to run around that corner, and don't stop. Do you understand me," she asks in a scared but strict whisper.
"What do you mean 'your'. I'm not leaving you here with that thing," I tell her in my own whisper, but it's a little louder than hers.
"I'll be fine. I'm gonna lead it away from you, and I'll find you later. Just whatever you do. Don't. Stop. Running."
She's about to turn back around the corner when I grab her hand. She looks back at me, and tries to jerk it out of my hand, but my grip is to tight. "Newt let go," she says kind of desperately as she uses her other hand to try and pry my fingers off of her.
I spin towards her, and pin her against the wall, one hand on either side of her head. I'm so close to her that my forearms are flat against the wall, and our chests are touching. She looks up at me with a scared expression, obviously not knowing what I'm doing.
"Please Newt. I can't lose you to," she says, and there's tears in her eyes. I still hear the griever sounds, but I'm completely oblivious to them as I stare into (Y/n)s eyes.
Without really thinking, I lean down, and connect our lips.
(Y/n)s POV
Newt surprises you when he leans down and kisses you. You immediately kiss him back, and your lips move in sync with each other's. Your hands wrap around his neck, and he presses you closer to the wall. His hand goes to rest on your hip while the other goes behind your head, and holds you closer to him if that's even possible.
Suddenly the griever sounds make it into your brain, and you turn your head away from him. "Please run. Please," you beg him, but it doesn't come out as desperate as you wanted it to.
"Only with you," he whispers back, and pulls away from you. You both run towards the corner he was supposed to go down originally, but you both stop in the middle of the path when you hear a griever come around the corner.
You slowly turn towards it, and when you look at it, you want to stab your knife into its slimy blob of a body, but you restrain yourself from the stupid action. Newts standing right next to you, so you reach over and grab his hand. You entwine your fingers, and hold his hand tight.
The griever rolls towards you, and that's when you shout, "Run," and you both run off around the corner. Your still clutching his hand, so it's easier for him to keep his balance when you randomly turn corners. You can hear the griever following behind you, and that just motivates you to run faster.
You try desperately to distract your mind by thinking about each turn you make. Left, right, left, straight, left, straight, right, left, right.
You turn another corner, and see a large gap in the wall starting to close. You drop Newts hand, and stop at the entrance. "Keep going I have a plan," you shout at him as he comes to a stop. Thankfully he listens to you, and he starts running to the end of the two walls. The griever spots you from around the corner, and chases after you.
You start sprinting as fast as humanly possible through the closing walls, the griever following close behind. You check to make sure Newt made it through the walls, and you see him with a terrified face, waiting for you at the end. The doors are still closing, and the griever is getting closer and closer to you. You somehow run even faster, as the griever chases after you. Just as the walls are about to close around you, you jump out from between them, the griever getting squished.
Unfortunately, Newt was standing right at the exit of the two walls, so you ran right into him. He tumbled backwards, you on top of him, and wrapped his arms around you before you both hit the ground. It made you blush that he was trying to help you not get hurt when he was the one who was going to take most of the impact.
You just lay on top of him for a minute, panting heavily, and just staring into his eyes. You let out a loud, exhausted groan, and drop your head onto his shoulder. He just chuckles while wrapping his arms around you.
"Please never do that again," he mumbles into your hair, and you smile into his shoulder.
"I won't unless it will save our lives again. Deal," you ask while lifting your head up, and staring into his eyes again.
"Nope," he announces stubbornly, and you chuckle at his answer.
You glance down at his lips, and back up at his eyes. He seems to get the message, and you lean forward and your lips ghost over his. He makes the bigger move by putting a hand behind your head, and pressing your lips to his. You wrap your hands around the back of his neck, and hold him close to you. He runs his fingers through your hair, lightly tugging on the ends, earning a moan from you.
He smirks into the kiss, and you smile. It just feels so right kissing him. It's like you had done it a thousand times before, but the memories were locked away somewhere in your mind that you can't reach. Suddenly your brain turns back on, and you remember that your still in the maze.
You pull away from the kiss, and Newt frowns. "We need to get back to the Glade," you tell him, and his frown turns to a look of understanding. That's when you remember that you left Alby in the little compartment. You jump up off of Newt, and grab his hand to pull him up.
When your both standing up, you don't let go of his hand as you start running back to the doors. You don't really have to focus on where your going because you've run the maze so many times, that your just on autopilot.
When you run around the corner, you see the wall of ivy that Alby was behind. You rush over, panicking over the thought that a griever found him. Your heart drops into your stomach when you see that the compartment is empty.
"No no no," you whisper as your hands cover your mouth and nose. You fall to your side, and your leaning up against the maze wall.
"(Y/n) what's wrong," Newt asks you while kneeling down next to you. He hadn't looked under the ivy, so he didn't know what you were freaking out about.
"He's gone," you whisper so quietly that you can't even hear yourself.
"Love what did you say," Newt asks while putting both hands on your shoulders, trying to get you to focus on him.
"He's gone," you say a little louder this time. "He's gone. He's gone. He's gone, and it's my fault!" You shout, and you start sobbing into your hands.
Newt scrambles over to the little space in the wall, and peels the ivy away, only to be met with an empty block of concrete. He slowly crawls back over to you, and sits next to you while wrapping you in his arms. You turn to him, and sob into his shoulder, not being able to contain your tears.
You've lost both Ben and Alby within two days, and both of them were caused while you were right there with them.
"I wish it had stung me. I wish it would have taken me, and let them live," you sob while holding onto him for dear life, partially worried that he would disappear if you let go.
"Don't say that. Listen I know Alby and Ben meant so much to you, but do you think either of them would willingly trade places with you? No. They cared about you to much. They wouldn't want you to cry over them. They would want you to pick yourself back up, and finish what started three years ago," he tells you, and his words make you feel a little better.
There's a minute of silence between you two, and you ask, "Please promise me one thing. Promise me I'll never lose you," you ask while lifting your head up to look into his eyes to see his reaction.
"Promise," he whispers, and starts to lean in. He connects your lips in a passionate but soft kiss, and somehow you can tell that he means it. And you realize that as long as you had him with you, you would make it through anything.
Thank you creators, you say in your head, wondering if you sound like a horrible person for saying thanks for sending another innocent boy down here. Your never going to lose him.
