A Few Weeks After Chapter 15*

Elizabeth's POV*

Aunty Katarina, Erina, Soma, and I were in the mansion watching Eishi nervously make his address.

He nervously came on the screen and asked, "Are we really going ahead with this? I've said it before... I'm not the type to make public speeches...".

Rindo sat him down saying, "Start talking, Eishi!".

She walked off-screen and Eishi said, "If only Isshiki or Erina were here... And how much more time do I have before we go live?".

Nene off-screen said, "The cameras are already rolling.".

Eishi freaked out and said, "What?!".

He grabbed his papers and nervously said, "Um, hello. I'm Eishi Tsukasa from Central. I'm here today to tell you all about the major event awaiting high-school first-years at the end of the second semester... The Advancement Exam. Last year, more than half the first-years left the Academy due to this excessively rigorous exam. But from now on, that'll change. Headmaster Azami has liberated you from unnecessary weeding. You can easily pass most of the exam by demonstrating mastery of the techniques we have taught you in class. You are no longer bound by the old, outdated system. If you side with Central, you can all become first-rate chefs! But the exams will also clearly demonstrate what happens to those of you who do not fall in line with Headmaster Azami's vision. Um, well, that's it. Whew, I was so nervous. Next time you should do it, Rindo.".

I stood up and said, "He just declared us rebels. This is tantamount as a declaration of war against us.".

Aunty Katarina said, "Either submit to Azami or be expelled.".

Soma said, "Oh?".

Aunty Katarina left the room to make tea and the three of us discussed the fact that old man Sorichiro trained or inspired all three of us.

I admitted that I use about fifty-percent of what he taught me when I think up a dish for one of the black books but the golden book is my own personal art and that I learned all he knew within two months which made Soma hum at me not believing me.

Erina admitted it was he who showed her the beauty of food before what papa Azami did.

Soma didn't need to explain since he was his dad.

I said, "The three of us.".

The two of them looked at me.

I smiled and said, "That old geezer really inspired the best didn't he?".

Erina expressed that she was lost and I pulled her into a hug and said, "You're not lost, Erina. I found you after all this time.".

Some said, "And don't worry, I'll whip you up some Yukihira food to make you feel better.".

Erina started complaining at him about whether or not that'd make anything better or not and I just sat back and watched.

I smiled thinking maybe the old man's got some tricks left to teach.

I mean if he could train someone like Soma, that definitely means the old man's got a few tricks left to teach me probably.

No matter, someday I'm gonna beat that old man.

Soma asked me for some help with the Tempura Bowl he was making and I helped.

After we made the bowl, we presented it to Erina and she became head over heels for it.

Aunty Katarina came in with the tea and said, "You three make an interesting picture.".

She showed Soma the picture of me, Alice, and Erina in the hot tub and started making fun of me.

I growled angrily and Erina sat laughing at us all joke around.

For some reason, Erina found her confidence and wanted to assemble all of the Kyokusei first-years tomorrow mourning and she had a look that meant we shouldn't cross her.

When Soma left to tell the others what to do, she conveyed to me that she was gonna teach them how to cook better.

The Next Mourning*

We stood in front of Kyokusei and Erina and I stood side by side in front of them.

She started to sound like Soma and me as she inspired the troops.

Once she was done they were cheering.

She sighed happily and I put a hand on her shoulder and said, "That's how you should be, Erina. The world deserves to see you smile.".

She smiled at me and I smiled at her.

She, Hisako, and I would help improve our fellow first-years skills to combat this exam while I assumed papa Azami was off brainwashing more students to his cause.

Hisako sat us all down and said, "It is tradition to hold the annual advancement exams for first-years in Hokkaido.".

Soma said, "Hokkaido, huh.".

Megumi asked, "Is it going to be like the training camp from hell?".

Hisako said, "There are many similarities, but there is one major difference. We will be changing locations after we clear every topic. We begin at the prefecture's southern tip, then continue moving north as we clear each stage of the exams. The academy possesses many lodging facilities across the prefecture, you see.".

I said, "So we're gonna travel all over Hokkaido. That's pretty cool.".

Hisako said, "There are points when the route diverges, as well. The final stage of the exams occurs on this isolated island at the very north. There's no doubt that the ingredients Hokkaido is known for will be featured this year, as well. But the situation has changed drastically, given that everything is now under Central's control.".

Erina said, "Yes, that's why you should prepare. Prepare so that you can be flexible when you get here! For the next seven days before your departure, we'll hold a Hokkaido seminar for you!".

I asked, "We?".

Erina said, "Yes. You're going to assist me.".

I nodded and Soma asked, "A Hokkaido seminar?!".

Erina said, "Elizabeth and I have been exposed to a wide variety of ingredients from across Japan and across the world. Those from Hokkaido are no different. I am going to impart my knowledge to you. Elizabeth may not be able to impart all of her wisdom... But we're giving you all more ammunition! The ammunition you can use to get through the exams! Also... I'll be a bit harsh, but I will not allow any complaining. I trust you will keep up?".

Everyone besides Soma and me nervously said, "Yes!".

First, we were gonna use potatoes.

I held one up and said, "Potatoes. These are essential in any discussion of Hokkaido's culinary scene since I last visited.".

Hisako said, "Indeed. Hokkaido produces 80 percent of the nation's potatoes. Fifty varieties are grown there.".

Erina said, "To start, we'll have you memorize the characteristics of all the varieties.".

Yuki asked, "All fifty varieties?!".

Erina said, "After we're done with potatoes, we'll hammer in the knowledge of all other ingredients unique to Hokkaido, such as seafood, vegetables, beef, and wild game.".

One of the boys said, "But there's only a week left!".

I said, "That's right! So put your backs into it, people!".

Erina and Soma went to greet Ikumi, Isami, and Takumi as they arrived while Hisako and I got everyone started.

I set some out and began naming them off for the troops.

I said, "Toyohiro, Snowden, Kita Hime, Sayaka, May Queen, Toya, Kita Akari, Kona Fubuki, Early Starch...".

Hisako and Erina ground the rest of the other ingredients into their heads while I kept on them about memorizing it.

1 Week Later*

We were all standing in Hokkaido.

Soma and the others from Kyokusei were having a grand time in the snow while Alice, Ryo, Erina, Hisako, and I stood nearby.

Alice said, "They're all so innocent.".

Erina walked over and said, "Cut that out! Did you come here to play? Is now the time to be frolicking through the snow?".

Everyone besides Soma said, "We're sorry Erina Sensei!".

We all got on the transport busses and began heading to our assigned locations.

On our way, some lady announcer said, "First-years of Totsuki Academy, welcome to Hokkaido, anyone who fails to pass will be taken right to the airport by the bus you see to your right. They will be forcibly flown to Tokyo and immediately expelled.".

We arrived and she said, "Thank you for your patience. We have arrived at the first-stage examination hall.".

We got off the bus and began strategizing.

We were gonna split off into teams and go to the separate individual rooms.

It was that one group comprised of five would make one dish and if the team didn't pass all five of them would be expelled.

The teams, however, were already set up.

For my team, I had Soma, Alice, Ryo, and Megumi.

Erina was in the same rooms as us but on a team of random girls from our class.

Soma said, "Guess they weren't really subtle about it, huh?".

I said, "They wanna group the rebels up so they can expel us.".

Megumi asked, "But why include Alice and Ryo?".

Alice said, "It's all fine by me! It's a good chance to stick it to Uncle Azami. Right, Ryo?".

Ryo lazily said, "Uh-huh.".

Soma asked, "Are the other dormitory residents and Takumi's crew in another room?".

I said, "Yeah. They're all in the same boat as us and have been put into teams as well.".

Soma asked, "Where's Hayama?".

I said, "Don't know. I looked everywhere for him and Jun but they weren't home or anywhere on campus.".

This old lady entered and said, "Hello everybody. I am Hiroi, a Totsuki Instructor and this room's examiner. The topic for this room is Salmon! You'll pass if you create a Salmon dish that meets my standards.".

The class was for some reason happy with Salmon because apparently, it's what Azami made for them in class.

Hiroi asked, "Everyone here attended Headmaster Azami's class, right? As long as you can reproduce the dish you learned in that class, you'll pass without a problem. Just stay calm and start cooking.".

Everyone besides us said, "Yes ma'am!".

Alice hummed and said, "I see. Talk about obvious.".

Megumi said, "We'll pass as long as we can make something good!

I said, "Not as simple as that I bet.".

Soma said, "But why Salmon?".

Ryo said, "Fall is when Salmon is in season. Right now, there wouldn't as much of a haul, and the quality would be lower. Choosing Salmon as the topic doesn't make any sense.".

Alice said, "True!".

Salmon was brought in and from the first glance it looked top-notch but the Salmon we were given on the other hand.

I said, "This won't do at all.".

Ryo said, "Elizabeth's right. They're Hocchare, Salmon after the end of spawning their eggs with a flavor of the lowest quality.".

The examiner said, "Everyone has their ingredients, yes? You have till sundown. Let the cooking begin! Make the best Salmon dish possible!".

We all got started and Soma said, "Bet the other rebels are being treated the same in the other rooms.".

The old hag came over and said, "If you don't like what you were given, you can go find your own Salmon if you want. Of course, that's if you can still finish the dish before sundown. Put simply, it's absolutely impossible for you to pass now!".

She laughed and Soma, Ryo, and I got to work thinking of an idea.

The three of us sat in a little circle and began thinking.

Ryo said, "The maturation technique you used in the preliminaries isn't an option when we only have until sundown, too Soma.".

Soma said, "I think Erina mentioned something at the study group. If I remember, I think it's called...".

I asked, "I know what you're talking about Soma. Do you think we can find it if we look, Alice?".

Alice said, "Definitely. I'd bet money on it.".

Soma said, "Time will be pretty tight.".

Ryo asked, "Who do you think I am? When it comes to preparing seafood I'm second to none in speed.".

I said, "All right then!".

Soma smirked said, "We'll be the ones who'll make the best dish in this room!".

We came up with the idea and executed it by having some of us head down to the city to get the right Salmon before sundown and the rest of us to get the ingredients ready which was just Megumi and me.

When it came down to only being thirty minutes left Soma, Alice, and Ryo returned with a rare top-notch Salmon for me to go to work on.

I went to work on it with Ryo and Soma assisting me while Alice and Megumi prepared it and with our workflow, it was done within 10 minutes with 20 to spare.

We served up our Yuan-style Grilled Tokishirazu Salmon.

Soma said, "You're-".

Alice interrupted and said, "Please dig-".

I interrupted and said, "Please enjoy the Salmon.".

She took a bite and afterward begrudgingly let us pass.

She left the classroom in a huff and Erina came over to us.

The PA Lady said, "To those of you who passed stage one, you will be traveling to the stage two examination hall by train. You will board the train after dinner.".

Soma said, "A train, huh?".

After Dinner*

I was looking at the greatest train ever, the Tsukikage.

On our way to our destination, I kept Erina company while I was helping her relax even if that meant giving her a back massage.

After that nervous experience, we sat and watched the beautiful night sky.

I took her hand into mine as we watched the sky together and before the night was done we shared a star-lit dance and before she went to bed she surrendered her tenth seat on the council to me.

The Next Day*

We passed the city and stopped at the Sapporo Station.

We were all standing in a room awaiting the second trial to begin.

Our instructor said, "Hello students! You must be tired after such a long trip! I am Endo, Totsuki lecturer, and your examiner for the second stage. This stage will be an individual exam. Also, instead of specifying ingredients to prepare, you are going to make a noodle dish! Speaking of noodles, Hokkaido is famous for having a wide variety of ramen. Sapporo Ramen, Hakodate Ramen, Asahikawa Ramen, and so on. There are many restaurants renowned for udon and soba, too! Hokkaido is the top domestic producer of buckwheat by far, actually. Given how vast the prefecture is, it's not surprising that Hokkaido gave rise to a diversity of noodle dishes that reflect regional differences. With that in mind, let's try making a noodle dish today! But there are only basic ingredients here. We have many different kinds of noodles here. In addition to green onions and other basic vegetables, we have already prepared basic components such as broth and stock. But those aren't enough to construct a gourmet dish, as you know. So you'll be tasked with sourcing any missing ingredients. If you can present a single serving of noodles that can impress me, you'll pass! You have three hours! Now, enter the exam hall in the order in which your name is called and start cooking.".

Erina and I were sent to Hall A and we were away from the others.

Shun, Zenji, and Isami soon enough followed after everyone used the ingredient table up.

I sighed as I finished my bowl of ramen with ease and presented it.

I passed and Erina did to and we watched as Shun, Zenju, and Isami used our teaching to pass.

We all passed yet again and didn't suffer a single loss.

I smiled and we all went sightseeing.

Soma and Takumi ran off to try everything while the others went sightseeing.

Erina, Alice, Ryo, and I walked around.

Ryo and I challenged a chef to a food battle for the right to a free meal which we easily won and got a free meal for us all out of it.

We just sat after that socializing and whatnot.

Alice and Erina were being friendlier then usual and Ryo said, "Don't tell them that they're being friendly.".

I hummed and Takumi and Soma found us and said, "There you are!".

I turned to them and asked, "What do you guys want?".

Soma said, "We found a totally awesome-looking place, but there's way too much we want on their menu!".

Takumi asked, "You four haven't had dinner yet, right? Let's order a ton and share everything between six of us!".

I said, "We did yes.".

Soma said, "Dang.".

Erina said, "But we could go for seconds.".

Alice said, "Seconded.".

Ryo lazily said, "Whatever.".

I said, "Point me in the direction of the chef and I'll get us a free meal.".

Soma and Takumi said, "Heck yeah!".

Alice and Ryo headed off though claiming they wanted to try something else though before the train took off.

Another cooking battle later, there the four of us sat eating a crap ton of food that ranged from good to bad.

I feel like we were missing someone though.

Oh, right, Akira, whatever did happen to him.

A Few Minutes Later*

The four of us boarded the train but we were apparently on a completely different train according to the phonecall from Hisako.

Rindo came out of nowhere and asked, "What's there to be surprised about? You knew how things would go from the very beginning.".

We all turned and looked at her.

Rindo said, "Hey, it's really cold, isn't it?".

Our train took off and Rindo said, "The pamphlet mentioned that the train route would diverge, didn't it? In the worst case, you'll only see the others at the final stage of the exam. And that's if you all make it to that stage. And the third stage is coming up next, all the rebels will be going up against The Council of Ten! Let's make this a fun trip. Right, Elizabeth?".

She and I stared off as the train kept moving.
