Upon arrival I was surprised to see Basen and Lily both immediately stood from their seats rushing towards me, hugging me on the spot.
"I'm so happy you're finally awake, hyung-nim."
"I'm glad you're finally healthy again, hyung-nim," Basen said a bit slower to approach, I let out a long sigh before I patted both of them on the head.
"I'm sorry I made you all so worried."
"Yes everyone missed you dearly, it's nice to finally get to see you healthy." I turned to see Lady Violen speaking still seated with her perfectly kept hair seeing a small smile grow on her face.
Honestly, all this affection still felt a bit foreign to me especially since it technically isn't towards me. I only nodded and sat in my place next to Cale.
"Ahem Cale are you, enjoying the food."
"Yes father, it's delicious." Violen, Basen, and Lily's eyes turned to Cale slightly widened from shock but both Cale and I just ignored them, it was none of our business.
As meal time finished Cale decided to go visit the training ground to do some light exercise which he offered for me to join but I refused. I want to be a slacker and besides I need to plan everything I need to prepare for the upcoming war. More specifically, how to get the ancient powers I plan to retrieve. The Birth of a Hero had mentioned the location of several ancient powers, some of which were taken by the future heroes of the Western continent. Though most of these powers ended up useless for them so it shouldn't be a problem if I take them first. Especially upon learning today's date.
"Unfortunately, I couldn't save Harris Village but that does mean Choi Han will be arriving soon." 2 days from now Choi Han will arrive at the city gate. Although I know now why Cale insulted Harris Village to Choi Han I still need to make sure that Ron, Beacrox, and Choi Han meet. Though I should probably check in with Cale once he regains his memory.
"Ron, I'd like to go to study." Ron looked at me with a slightly awkward expression.
"If you'd like to do so I'll make sure the servants clean it quickly for your use." Cale had trashed the room during one of his drinking sessions.
Once the study became available I went to write everything I needed to remember and do in Korean then burned the notes once I finished it's not like I can forget anyway. By the time I had finished, I was so tired I ended up skipping supper and sleeping in the study. This worried father so he assigned aspiring deputy butler Hans to watch over me. Though since it was the following day when I went back to my room I wasn't surprised to see Cale waiting for me with a serious expression. He must have regained his memories of the previous timeline.
"Ron, Hans, please leave my brother and I alone. I'd like to have a private conversation with Kim."
"Of course, young master." Both left the room and I was met with a piercing gaze.
"Who are you? I checked the date, you should have been dead by yesterday, there is no way for my brother to have miraculously survived his illness with some form of intervention by the Gods, are you my brother based on my memory of yesterday although you are incredibly similar you don't feel the same." guess his twin senses kicked in, so I don't see the point in hiding it
"You are right Kim should have died yesterday, but similarly to you, Kim agreed to a deal with the God of Death. Since Kim's illness was connected to both his soul and body the only way for him to survive was by transmigrating into another world and switching his soul with someone else. After the God of Death said he knows of someone who would be perfect to switch places with and could help you after your regression he chose to accept the deal hoping to lessen your burden. Though I have no idea why the God of Death chose me." Cale looked a bit hesitant, almost disheartened though I had expected this reaction. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
"At least he is alive now... Then who are you?"
"My name used to be Kim Rok Soo. I used to live in a very different world than this one, called Earth. My world had no magic or magical creatures and society had evolved to become semi peaceful, this is the world where Choi Han came from. But when I had just turned 20 something we referred to as the cataclysm occurred and monsters began to invade our world causing millions of deaths and people started gaining special abilities to fight against these monsters. I lived through this world until I was 38 having become a team leader that worked at a company specializing in killing monster threats." Cale scowled
"Seems you're aware of some of the future events?"
"Yeah, I was given a book series that I read till volume 5 which ends at the point just before the start of the war."
"Okay then how good is your memory?"
"I am someone who cannot forget." Cale paused for a moment almost as to process the information I gave him
"Wait, is that a power you have from your world?" I nodded in confirmation "What an awful but useful power. Anyway, I can't blame you for taking my brother's place as it was his choice and not your own, besides he would have died otherwise. But honestly, I don't know how I should treat you. We're the same age mentally and now physically..." Cale looked at me with a mix of complicated emotions. I only sighed, placing my hand on top of his head.
"Call me hyung, Kim and I share similar names and I've come to accept this as my new body and world. Your brother asked me to protect you and I'm someone who always keeps a promise and I promised Kim to protect you. So consider me your new older twin brother. I also know what it's like to lose everyone. That was the life I lived as Kim Rok Soo so I promised myself I wouldn't let any of my people die anymore. Cale you're my younger brother now so you're one of my people now." Cale didn't know how to feel but before he could make sense of his own emotions tears of relief, hope, happiness, and longing fell from his eyes.
Cale, who had expected to carry the burden of the world's survival alone, discovered he would have an older brother to carry the burden with him. Although it wasn't his original older twin brother he now had one to support him in what he knew was going to be a difficult endeavor.
"Now before you go on to tell me what happened in the future I just wanted to say my ultimate goal is to be a rich slacker. I am a selfish person who prioritizes the safety of my people and myself above others. Everyone else comes secondary. I don't want to do something troublesome like training so I plan on getting some ancient powers to get strong enough to not get hurt by most people. Also instead of antagonizing Choi Han try to at least have a decent relationship with him. That way he can leave with Ron and Beacrox while we avoid trouble." Cale looked at Kim slightly astonished, recollecting a memory in the far past when his mother was still alive.
Kim always had a naturally gifted mind but had a bad habit of contradicting himself, often saying he'd avoid troublesome things but always ended up doing the most out of anyone. Cale's twin senses were alerting Cale that both Kim would act the same. Originally Cale had wondered how he would get comfortable with calling Kim brother but upon realizing both Kim's had the same personality he believed this would be a lot easier than he thought. However, one difference he had noticed is that Kim was more self-deprecating than his other brother. Cale had the feeling Kim formerly Kim Rok Soo didn't have a great life even before the cataclysm. He sighed and smiled at Kim and began to behave exactly how he used to with his twin before the illness.
"If you say so I'll follow you wherever you go hyung." Kim turned to him slightly confused as to what the hell he meant by that. "But back to your plans for the future, could you be the one to meet Choi Han? I don't think I could handle talking to him." Cale shivered at the memory of when he was beaten half to death by Choi Han.
"Sure it wasn't as though I was the one beaten up. But let me know if you change your mind." Kim said with a smirk Cale's face went a shade of bright red
"Shut quit embarrassing me, anyways what ancient powers are you planning on getting?"
"Well, there is a wood ancient power I plan on getting first located at the man-eating tree in the slums. I need to feed it lots of bread with the allowance I was given by my father. Then a healing ancient power that Taylor Stan had originally gotten but ended up being useless to him."
"Oh yeah, I remember he died not long after the Plaza terror incident. Is there any way to save him? He would be a very useful ally if he took over the Marquis Stan."
"Don't worry I already have a solution for that, I'm not such a bastard to take someone's last hope away."
"Okay if you say so though honestly it would be easier if Ron stuck with us I know he's a vicious assassin but he was there when father wasn't and with the wyvern brigade invading the Henituse territory first the strong people by our side the better."
"That'll depend on their decisions. I won't force them to stay if they decide to leave."
"Fine by me as long as they return before the war."
"Agreed, anyways we'll discuss more as time progresses Choi Han should arrive tomorrow so I plan on making connections with Billios Flynn and going start the process of feeding the man-eating tree."
"No problems with me. I plan on going to visit my mother's grave. I think she left something for us there so I plan to check it out."
"Fine by me I'll let you know how things go."
Kim goes on to go into to exploring the Henituse territory the entire stock of bread at one of the couple bakeries in the territory with a bag filled with bread Kim goes on to visit the slums followed by two siblings an older girl with gray hair and a younger brother with short bright red hair who followed Kim till the man-eating tree warning him that he'll die Kim being very well aware of how these children felt tossed to wrapped loaves of bread on the floor. The younger sibling quickly grabbed both loaves handing one of them to his sister but the older sister kept her distance still wary of him
"Don't worry I won't die if you promise to keep it a secret. I promise to give you bread if you keep quiet about anything you see every time I stop by here." The gray-haired girl still eyed him wearily but nodded in affirmation that she understood what he said and would do as asked for the bread.
Kim smirked. I hate helping people uselessly, but I guess this isn't too bad either.
