My eyes were set on the camera as I ran into the swarm of abstractions. They were so closely smothered against each other that they could barely move, making it easier for me to worm my way through them. At the very center, I found the camera.
Heart hammering in my chest, adrenaline pulsing through my veins, I grabbed hold of it. The camera was strangely vibrating and I almost dropped it at first. Adjusting my grip on it, I held onto it firmly as I turned it around.
"Now, how do I fix everything?" I muttered to myself. As I turned the camera over multiple times, trying to figure out which button to press, I made sure to keep one eye on the abstractions around me. Each time they started coming at me, I made sure to jump out of the way.
It was hard to focus while at the same time keeping myself safe, but it was something I had to do. I had to set things right. It was all up to me.
None of the buttons looked like they were the right one. Although even if one of them was, I had no way of knowing. So, I decided to do the only thing I could think of and press all of the buttons.
I briefly hesitated. What if pressing all of the buttons only made the situation worse? I shook my head. There was no way it could get worse than it already was. It was worth the risk of pressing random buttons.
Unknowingly holding my breath, I started pressing all of the buttons, hoping for the best. None of them did anything to help the situation. Finally, there was only one button left: the one that caused this all.
I did not want to press this button but it was my last option. Maybe for some reason pressing it again would reverse everything that it did.
But before I could press the button, the camera began shaking more violently than before, startling me, causing me to drop it. As the camera hit the ground, a dark mass began to ooze out of it like a black cloud of dust. From the dark mass, another abstraction was formed.
The camera was still making them! I had to stop it now.
The abstraction turned to me and charged in my direction. I lunged out of the way and saved my fall with a roll. In one swift movement I sprung back onto my feet and grabbed the camera. "Here goes nothing!" I pressed the button.
Nothing happened.
The button was stuck. I tried pressing it harder several more times but it still stayed stuck. I tried everything I could think of to get the button unstuck but nothing would work. My stomach dropped. This was my last shot. I was doomed.
Suddenly, I was especially aware of all of the abstractions around me. The adrenaline quickly faded away, leaving me feeling vulnerable and cold. A creeping feeling shot down my spine, sending a chill crawling over my skin.
I wanted to curl up into a ball. I wanted to hide. I wanted to wake up and find that this all was just a dream. The abstractions were a dream. This circus was a dream. All I needed to do was wake up.
But I couldn't. This was not a dream. This was real. I couldn't hide. I needed to think. I couldn't give up. I had to do something.
An idea popped into my mind. It was crazy, but it just might work.
Smiling widely as the adrenaline slowly began to quicken my pounding heart, I gripped the camera tightly as I looked around at the abstractions. "Hey!" I yelled as loud as I could. Everything was suddenly still as the abstractions froze. Every single one of their eyes were glued on me. "Come and get me!"
I bolted towards the door. The second I moved, every single abstraction chased after me. When I got out of the room, I noticed that Jax was no longer there. I smiled. Good, he got help.
Right behind me, the abstractions began haphazardly filing out of my room. I looked over my shoulder to make sure they were following me as I continued running, not slowing down for a second.
Using the map in the camera, I made my way down a familiar path to a place that I never wanted to see again. But I had no choice.
As I approached the door to the room, I took a deep, shaky breath before opening it and stepping inside. And just like that, I was submerged in a chilling darkness.
Despite readying myself, my heart immediately felt like it stopped as my entire body became numb. Behind me, the abstraction copies poured into the room, coming face to face with their real counterparts.
The abstraction copies caught sight of the abstractions and their attention was immediately transferred over to them. As they rushed past me, I stood completely still, froze like a sculpture of ice.
I could not move. I could not think. I could not feel. I could barely even tell what was going on.
Everything was a blur. The loud pounding of my heartbeat ringing in my ears was the only sound I could hear. The sensation of pins and needles stabbing at my skin was the only thing I could feel.
It felt like the darkness around me was eating me whole. My bones felt like they had turned to lead. My veins had turned to ice.
A nonexistent pressure pushed down on me. I wanted to laugh in a twisted way that made no sense to me. I wanted this feeling to stop, for this all to go away.
Biting down hard on my lip, I was able to bring back enough of my senses to be able to get myself to move again. I did it. I lured all of the abstractions here. Now was not the time to lose my mind. All I had to do now was get out of here.
Forcing my fingers to peel off of the camera, I threw it further into the room. From the sound it made when it hit the ground I must have broken it even more now.
The sound caught the abstractions' attention, making them buzz around in a frantic frenzy. My body moving on autopilot, I ran towards the door. Several abstractions lunged at me. I was just barely able to duck out of the way, avoiding them in the nick of time.
When I made it out the door, I quickly slammed it shut behind me. Even though I was safe, my heart was still pounding rapidly in my chest. I figured it would take some time for it to calm back down.
With a shaky body and still slightly absent mind, I began to wander away from the room. I wasn't sure where I was going until I got there. When I saw him I stopped.
Jax smiled when he saw me. I was relieved to find that he was okay.
He began to walk towards me, but as he got closer, I was distracted by something else. There was a sudden pang in my heart. I could hear the sound throb in my ears. The pins and needles sensation came back a hundred times worse than before, making my limbs go numb.
The look on Jax's face contorted into one of concern and quickly grew into fear. Glancing down, I found my limbs were being eaten up by a dark mass that quickly spread across the rest of my body, eating me alive.
"Junie!" Jax called. Though he was standing right in front of me, his voice sounded like a muted whisper in the distance.
I opened my mouth to respond but nothing came out. My breath caught in my throat as darkness surrounded me and my vision was swallowed by black.
