The next morning was Friday, which was the day Josh's doctor was going to release him. Tyler didn't exactly know if he was going to be going to school, or if he was even going to go home. He was just happy he was out of the place that smelled like hopelessness and sterilized tools. But anything was better than seeing him cooped up on a hospital bed with nothing but a bouquet of flowers and few letters and balloons to keep him company.
When Tyler woke up, his head was on fire, and his ears were ringing. It wasn't from last night- it couldn't have been- it was because it was Friday. Friday was the day his mind started to self destruct trying to find what was wrong with it in the first place, which- to Tyler's understanding- never really works out. He could barely peel himself off of the floor when he finally gathered enough will to sit up. He felt his body shaking, and he felt a million pounds heavier than he should've been, which didn't help his case. When he finally stood up, he couldn't walk at first. The ringing in his ears only grew louder, and his head started burning even more.
He fumbled for his medication. Everything was there except for his migraine pills and the meds for his synesthesia. Although he didn't mind going through tasting and feeling colors, and having to describe things in an indescribable way, the migraine pills were something he couldn't live without. It felt like his head was bout to burn to a crisp. He angrily took what was left of his medications and struggled to hold himself up, grabbing onto the sink for support. His mom goes to work early on Fridays, and his dad hasn't been around lately. He was stuck without relief for the next 6 hours.
He was in almost no hurry to get to school, especially since he'd have to talk to Jenna about last night, which was more than a blur to Tyler. He grabbed his journal and sighed, his head still on fire. He wrote across the top of the page Migraine and started writing:
Am I the only one I know
Waging my wars behind my face and above my throat?
Shadows will scream that I'm alone, lone, lone...
He doggie eared the page and closed his notebook, looking at the time. He struggled to get uo again and got dressed in his darkest clothes. The sun wasn't out quite yet, since it was so foggy and cloudy today. He didn't expect Josh to be at school- he almost didn't want him to show up. Him showing up meant he wasn't on pain killers and would be able to ask him about the kiss that happened only a few days ago. When he silently rode the bus to school, walked through the miserable, lonely hallways, finally reaching his homeroom, he realized he felt really alone. Jenna didn't show up, Debby didn't either. He was really truly alone, and that scared him more than anything.
He though it was going to last the whole day, when Josh came slightly limping through the doorway. He felt his whole world either freeze or crash- it might've been both- as he watched Josh take his normal seat next to him.
"Josh! You're...You're okay!" he struggled to get the words out, his eyes welling up with tears, and he had no idea why. Josh looked at him with a smile, a smile he had seen before. It was the signature smile he always gave him, only something felt off about it- it felt...awkward.
"Hey, Tyjo. It's been a minute since I sat here hasn't it? It feels so great to be back..." His voice wasn't cheery, nor was it gloomy. Tyler scanned him at least twice. "Dude, a-are you okay? You seem...d-different somehow..."
Josh didn't seem to find it important to answer, so Tyler left it alone. That was when his worst nightmare became a reality. "Hey, Tyler...that kiss that happened a few days ago..." Josh started, and delayed finishing, "What are we? I mean, what am I to you?" Tyler felt his heart stop. "Erm.....I-I mean, you've kinda been my best friend that I've had a crush on for the longest time, b-but after that I'm just as confused as you are..." He looks down at his desk. He could feel Josh's stare.
"Well...I felt something there, and I mean, maybe it's too early to tell, but I think I felt something more....I think I want us to be something more..." He almost whispered the last part, and it danced through Tyler's ears, strangling his brain, and stopping his heart. He felt his whole face start reacting, flushing a deep red and burning. He swallowed thickly and looked over at him. "Wait...you want us to be l-like...a couple...?"
Josh nods, smiling a little, the missing something in it reappearing, making it more familiar all over again. Tyler didn't know how to feel, and he didn't know what to say. He just knew that Josh said all the right things and he was about to say all the wrong things. So he kept it as simple as possible, which probably seemed a little insensitive.
"Me too." Just two words, and he got what he wanted, which wasn't usually the case. Because he's had to say plenty of words in pairs of two, and none of them ever got him anywhere good. "I'm depressed" put him in therapy. "I'm dying" put him in a facility. "He's back" put him on medication. But all he said was me too, and he ended up with Josh Dun. He was going to start saying it more often.
Josh kissed him. It was a happy kiss, which was something Tyler could feel in his lips. When he pulled away, he felt all of his senses crash and burn at once. It wasn't scary but it wasn't comforting. It was unexpected and pleasant. Definitely the best kind of surprise. He couldn't say anything afterwards, however. He was too busy trying to figure out what was going on in Josh's head. He wasn't speaking either. That wad scarier than it should have been. But he looked around their classroom and saw everybody staring. Everyone stared at him, everyone stared at Josh. Tyler hated it, having everyone's eyes on him. That was why he spent the rest of the day with his head hung low, avoiding the watchful and judgemental teenagers' eyes, because he feared that if he looked it left room for the awful things he only imagined being said to be shot into the air for everybody else to hear and agree to. His worst fear wasn't even the things he knew they would say, though. It was what they'd do to him, and what they would do to Josh.
For a second, Tyler forgot about the burning in his head and the ringing in his ears. But, it came back, or rather strengthened, which left him wincing and constantly grabbing at his head in classes. His teachers were consistent with asking him if he was okay, and if he wanted to go to the nurse. Tyler was consistent with saying that he was just fine and that he didn't need to go to the nurse's office. But the burning in his head got to the point where he couldn't focus on anything. The ringing in his ears go so bad, he couldn't hear anything else.
Getting home was a challenge. Josh insisted on helping him walk to his house, and Tyler was in too much pain to deny his assistance. So, they walked to Tyler's house together. Josh held his hand the whole way there. It made Tyler realize something crazy about Josh. He didn't care about what image he put of himself to other people. Because while Tyler looked down and out the window the whole bus ride home, still hearing the pathetic name calling through his ringing ears, Josh said nothing. Either he didn't care, or he cared too much. He was still doing better than Tyler.
He might've just been dehydrated, on top of the fact that he didn't have any of his migraine medication, but he didn't understand why his ears were ringing. His ears never usually did that, and it was getting out of control before he could even find a way to control it, or even know what was causing it.
Josh sat awkwardly on Tyler's couch. Tyler would've sat next to him, but he needed to find a way to refill his medication. How he was going to explain how he ran out was beyond his knowledge at the moment, which was why he needed to think of it then.
"You okay, Ty?" Josh looked over at Tyler standing in front of the couch, staring at it. Tyler looked at him in an instant, confused for a second. "Hm? Oh...yeah...yeah, I'm okay..." He nodded and stared at the couch again. It wasn't really him staring, it was more like him thinking, but his eyes were focused on the closest object.
"Are you sure, because you're acting a little strange..." He hesitated this question, which forced Tyler to not hesitate his answer. "I-I ran out of my medication...i-it's no big d-deal..." He hesitated, and by that point Josh knew what that meant. "It's a huge deal, babe. Do you need me to drive you somewhere so you can go and get your medication or something?" Tyler's whole system crashed again, which sent him in uncontrollable giggles. "Did you just call me...Babe?" Josh blushed for the first time in forever, and that made Tyler giggle even more. "Yes...I did. Sorry, I didn't know if that was okay or not..." He closed his eyes and looked down. Tyler finally sat down next to him and kissed his cheek, smiling giddily. "No, it's perfect. I don't mind it if you don't mind it. I mean, I've never been called babe before...but, seriously about the ride to go and get my medication refill- th-that would really help..." He side hugged him, blushing. It was obvious that Josh was so willing to help Tyler with what he needed, and it warmed his heart. "Oh...of course! Let's go now." He stands, Tyler standing with him. Josh knew better than to leave his keys out of his sight, so he had them ready for use in the pocket of his jeans . They jingled as he swung them between his fingers, running his free hand through his dyed hair. It was still that really pretty periwinkle blue, which made Tyler blush a little more as he followed Josh out the door.
On their way to the pharmacy to get his medication, Tyler was fiddling with the rubber bands he put on his wrist. Josh glanced over at him every once in a while, each time his eyes growing a little darker. Tyler wondered how long it would take until his eyes portrayed a black kind of shade. He looked out of his window, unwilling to look at him. The ride was pretty quiet for the most part, which made Tyler kid of uneasy. Josh eventually turned on the radio, but neither of them liked anything that was on so he turned it back off. Tyler blinked slowly a few times, the motion of the car threatening to lull him to sleep until they came to a complete stop at a red light. Josh attempted to make conversation, but he was just as bad at it as Tyler was bad at controlling his stutter- he wasn't great, but he wasn't the worst either. It was like a toddler trying to make sense out of a sentence with words that don't go together.
"So....um..." this was how he attempted to start. Tyler knew the feeling, the feeling of trying to start a conversation before you even come up with what you want to say. It was really funny to him. All he could do was laugh as he car began to move again. "You don't have to try t-to speak to me in the silence, Josh. I-I'll be okay..." He felt accomplished, almost making that sentence without stuttering.
For a second, the ringing in his head disappeared. His body was still trying to self destruct. Tyler could feel it in his skull and throughout his bloodstream. It didn't really necessarily bother him as much as they parked, exited the car, and walked into the pharmacy. Tyler allowed Josh to speak for him since his mouth refused to open anymore, vomit suddenly threatening to escape his throat when he attempted to exchange words with the clerk. His medication was placed in a small plastic bag with a receipt with his name stapled onto it. Josh was a little shorter than Tyler, so he had his well built arms wrapped around his waist as they walked out of the pharmacy. It made Tyler get butterflies in his stomach, which replaced the nauseating feeling of anxiety. When he got into the car, he took the pills and swallowed them dry, leaning his head back and letting out an exasperated and relieving sigh. "Thanks, Jishwa...." he whispered, eyes in Josh's direction. He smiled as he watched his face slowly transform. "My pleasure."
