Soren adalah kota nelayan yang tidak pernah benar-benar ramai, tetapi juga tidak bisa disebut sepi. Ia berdiri di antara dua hal yang selalu saling mengawasi: laut dan hutan. Rumah-rumahnya berjejer mengikuti garis pantai, sebagian dari kayu tua yang menghitam oleh garam, sebagian lagi dari beton yang dibangun seadanya. Tidak ada gedung tinggi, tidak ada lampu kota yang menyilaukan-hanya cukup untuk disebut tempat tinggal.
Pagi di Soren dimulai dengan suara mesin perahu dan bau ikan segar. Pasar hidup sejak matahari belum tinggi, dan semua orang bergerak dengan ritme yang sama, seolah waktu di kota ini punya batasnya sendiri. Siang berlalu cepat. Soren tidak pernah suka berlama-lama di bawah terik matahari.
Menjelang sore, kota mulai menutup dirinya.
Jam enam bukan sekadar penanda waktu, melainkan kebiasaan yang diwariskan dari ketakutan lama. Toko-toko menurunkan pintu. Anak-anak dipanggil pulang. Jalanan yang tadi ramai perlahan kosong, bukan karena perintah, melainkan karena kesepakatan diam-diam yang tidak pernah diperdebatkan.
Laut di Soren tenang di permukaan, tetapi tidak pernah benar-benar bisa ditebak. Para nelayan tahu kapan harus berangkat dan kapan harus kembali, bukan dari jam, melainkan dari perasaan yang tidak pernah mereka jelaskan. Ada hari-hari ketika laut dibiarkan begitu saja, tanpa alasan yang masuk ke akal orang luar.
Tak jauh dari permukiman, hutan berdiri seperti batas yang tidak resmi. Jalurnya dikenal, tetapi kedalamannya tidak pernah benar-benar dijelajahi. Tidak ada pagar, tidak ada larangan tertulis, namun semua orang tahu sampai di mana kaki boleh melangkah. Hutan itu tidak mengancam, tidak pula mengundang-ia hanya ada, menunggu, seperti sudah terlalu lama mengenal kota ini.
