The last few days had been complete bliss after that one date. Aubrey was just waiting for the right time to propose now.
"I'm coming home early today just so you know," Keanna said, wrapping her arms around Aubrey's neck that morning. "Me and Kendrick are going to lunch."
"Why?"
"Because we're friends...?"
"I kinda thought we put the Kendrick thing to bed," Aubrey commented.
"I thought so too," Keanna replied. "Obviously you still want to talk about it so let's talk."
"I just don't feel comfortable with you going out to lunch with him," Aubrey stated. "Simple as that."
"Okay, but we're just friends, Aubrey. You have to trust me. I would never cheat on you, I promise."
"But-"
"But nothing. I don't want to be late so I'll see you later. I love you." She kissed his temple and blew a kiss to Shiloh before walking out the door.
Aubrey took a deep breath and did his best to ignore the situation. They just got out of a really rough patch and he knew they didn't need another argument.
Somehow, Shiloh fell asleep by the time he was down the street so there was no screaming and crying. Today was starting off fairly well oddly enough.
"Good morning, Mr. Graham," Donovan greeted as Aubrey walked in the building. "Hey, Shiloh."
Shiloh only buried herself in the crook of Aubrey's neck. She still wasn't comfortable around him.
"Party and them are already working if you wanna check on them. Also there's a meeting about a PR campaign for Majid Jordan at three o'clock," Donovan said following Aubrey into the elevator.
"Nice. I don't know what I'm gonna do with this one," Aubrey said, looking at Shiloh. "She's been pretty used to hanging out with me here but I don't know if she can stay with anyone else. I might have to take her to the meeting."
"I can ask Ryan," Donovan laughed. "She likes him a lot."
"Yeah, but I don't think she likes him that much."
Aubrey didn't want Shiloh to get too accustomed to tagging along with him to work but he also didn't want her sitting at home all the time.
"Oh, the girl is still here," Party yawned as Aubrey entered the room.
"I hope that isn't a problem," he said.
"Are you sure something's even wrong with her?" Noelle asked.
"What are you talking about?"
"How do you know she isn't faking this?" Ryan clarified. "Kids fake being sick to get out of school all the time."
"You guys really think my daughter would fake a social anxiety disorder so she didn't have to go to kindergarten?"
"You never know," Chubbs argued.
"I do know. She's my daughter, I would've caught that. Look, I'm gonna go check my email or something because it's too early for me to deal with your bullshit."
Aubrey waved for Donovan to follow him and walked to his office with an overwhelming amount of frustration. Why would anyone think Shiloh was capable of lying about something like this?
"You should get some new friends," Donovan advised.
"I'll look into that," Aubrey replied giving Shiloh blank paper and a pen. "Can you run a few errands for me? Be back by three for that meeting. I'll text you the list."
"No problem."
"Where did you and Mommy go last night?" Shiloh inquired as soon as the door closed behind Donovan.
"We went out on a date," Aubrey responded, smiling down at her.
"Are you guys friends again?"
He chuckled. "Yeah, you could say that."
"No more fights?" Her eyes lit up at the thought.
"No more fights, baby. I promise."
She grinned before going back drawing. He could get used to his daughter being this happy.
Three o'clock rolled around when Shiloh was on her fifth drawing. Donovan returned on time as expected and reminded Aubrey to go to the meeting. Shiloh continued drawing silently in the corner of the room.
Not even five minutes into the discussion, a flood of texts came in from Keanna. He responded discreetly and told her to talk to Donovan instead. She knew he was busy.
"Um, Mr. Graham," Donovan interjected, stepping into the room. "Sorry to interrupt but you should really take this call."
"Excuse me for a second," Aubrey said. "Keanna, I'm in a meeting right now, baby, you have to-"
"Aubrey, you have to come home now," she hissed. Her voice was quiet and raspy over the line.
"Are you okay?"
"No, Kendrick, he..."
It was silent.
"Keanna? Hello?"
"He's fucking crazy, Aubrey. I called the police already, just come home!"
"I'm on my way right now don't move."
Aubrey swiped Shiloh from off the floor and nearly sprinted out of the room.
"What's going on?" Donovan asked as Aubrey handed his phone back.
"I don't know but reschedule the meeting. Something's up with Keanna."
He pushed and shoved passed people to get to the elevator and smashed the down button. The descent to the first floor felt like eternity.
It seemed as though there were more police cars than usual on the street today and that worried him. He prayed that the cops made it home already to get Keanna out of whatever situation she was in.
"You're driving really fast, Daddy, don't crash," Shiloh said as Aubrey rounded a corner.
"I know, just hold on."
Emergency vehicles littered the main parking lot and Shiloh was more than happy to see so many firetrucks in one place but that only made Aubrey even more nervous. He carried his daughter inside the building and got onto the elevator up to his penthouse.
Paramedics and yellow tape. That's all he needed to see.
"Where's Keanna?" he inquired frantically at the police officer standing in front of the door. He could see streaks of blood on the living room floor.
"Who are you?"
"I'm Aubrey Graham. Keanna's my girlfriend and the mother of my child, where is she? This is my house!"
"Wait, you said you knew Keanna Miller?" the officer asked. His tone became softer and more somber.
"She's my girlfriend, I told you already."
"Sir, I'm really sorry but we confirmed her dead on the scene."
Aubrey blinked. "Excuse me?"
"I'm sorry."
"But I just called her about five minutes ago and-"
"It happened really fast, sir. We also found a black male in his early to mid-thirties who was also deceased, unfortunately. They both suffered gunshot wounds but the unidentified male was shot in the side of the head so we've ruled it as a suicide. We think he might've shot your girlfriend and then shot himself."
Aubrey put Shiloh down and drew in a deep breath. This was way too much information at one time.
Keanna was really gone. He didn't want to believe it but he forced himself to.
"Sir, do you think you might know who the unidentified male is? Was he friends with Keanna?" the officer asked.
"Kendrick," he mumbled.
"Pardon?"
"Kendrick. She went out to lunch with him today. They work together," he explained.
"We'll look into that. I'm so sorry for your loss. This is tragic," the officer said specifically glancing at Shiloh. She had no idea of what she just lost.
"What am I supposed to do?" Aubrey asked, bringing his daughter close to him.
"Don't go anywhere because we'll need to ask you some more questions. I think you know more information than anyone."
Aubrey didn't move. He couldn't. Keanna was gone and Kendrick killed her. It was almost ironic.
He wondered where the overwhelming amounts of sadness were. Aubrey didn't really "feel" anything right now. He was empty.
It was funny because right when Keanna became everything and more to him, she was taken away. The tears began to fall.
