50: The Day I was Ambushed
Biya's POV
The day I had to go back to work was bittersweet. I didn't want to let go of Geno but I had to in order to protect him. My parents promised they'll visit me in Rome so I can have some time with my son and I appreciated that from them. I didn't want to leave Geno with Maria apartment. It was safer this way. The Moretti Mansion is a place full of security personnel due to the high profiles of my family. It's better this way. This won't take long. I'll catch who Vicenzio is as soon as possible. I kissed my son one more time on both cheeks before bidding goodbye.
"Be safe, okay? Call me if you need anything." Mom spoke while trying to make Geno calm down. He was crying loudly and it broke my heart to leave him this way. I really don't want to leave him.
"I will. I'll see you soon!" I said.
"Emil! Take care of her. Remember what we talked about." Dad spoke this time, his eyes shooting at Emil with a death glare.
"I will, Sir. Thanks for having me."
"Be safe!" They both waved goodbye and I went to his car. Emil opened the door for me and I thanked him before going in. He closed the door and waved a hand again at my family before rounding the car, opened the door and got in.
"Are you ready?" He asked pulling his seatbelt on. I was reminded of that and did the same.
"Yes." I looked at the side mirror and watched mom calm Geno down. My vision began to blur and a second later, tears streamed down my face.
"I don't want to go back." I cried, my hands covering my face as I broke down.
"Biya." I heard him speak my name before I felt his hand gently hold my wrist.
"Can I hold you?" He has never been like this to me before. I froze for a second, looking at him in surprise at his action before nodding. He would do whatever he wanted with me before, only asking permission when we're in bed. He was an impulsive man, a ruthless one in the business world and a man wanting to dominate everything in his path but why was he like this now? Was he soft too in public? His hand let go of my wrist, slid to my hand and intertwined our hands together. He held me tight and he pulled my hand gently with his and kissed the back of my hand.
"It's going to be okay, Biya. This is just temporary. Do you want Geno to stay with you? We can do something about that without risking your safety and his safety." He suggested and I looked at him for a second.
"You'll do that? He's my son, Emil. He's my responsibility. Not yours." I replied and he smiled before leaning towards me.
"Biya, you love your son and I have grown to love him too. I will do what's best for you and your son. You don't have to do this alone. I spoke to your dad about your well-being and I mentioned Geno too. I'll do everything in my power to protect you both." I broke down as he finished his sentence and he unbuckled his seatbelt and gave me a hug.
"Let's go back to Rome and arrange everything there. Then, we can take Geno there and make sure you will never have to worry about him getting hurt by Vicenzio. "
"Thank you, Emil. Thank you so much." I sobbed and I felt his hand rub my back.
"It's not a problem, Biya. For you and Geno's, I will never let anyone hurt you both." His voice was full of promises and I knew he was determined to make it possible. Emil, you're the man who didn't just focus on me but you focused on my son's well-being as well. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I hugged him back. A moment later, we broke out from our embrace and in the perfect time, my dad knocked on Emil's door.
"Hey. Are you both okay?" Emil rolled down the window for us to reply properly.
"We're good, Sir. Biya just had to take a moment." Emil replied for me and I sniffed, wiping my tears away.
"Be safe, dad. I'll see you as soon as possible." I promised him and he smiled, the corners of his eyes wrinkling.
"Don't worry, Biya. We'll be safe here. You should be the one worrying for yourself. Emil, if she ever gets in trouble, I'll see you in my office." He warned the man beside me and I could see Emil's Adam's apple bob as he swallowed.
"Yes Sir. I will take care of her." He promised my dad. Dad seemed convinced at that and nodded at him before telling us we should go. We bade goodbye again and this time, I was now calm. I was appeased. Emil buckled his seatbelt again.
"You okay now?" He asked and I nodded, a smile now etched on my lips. I was now content, soothed by his words and plans.
"I am. Let's go." I told him and he nodded before he began driving away. As he drove away, my parents' figure went smaller and smaller until they were out of sight. I'll be back. I promised that to myself and I took a deep breath letting the anxiety and fear go. My family is with me. Emil is with me. I can face Vicenzio now.
Days have passed by and it seemed quiet. Too quiet for my liking. The feeling of impending danger was deeply drilling in my head and I couldn't help but feel agitated by it.
"You okay, Biya?" Lia asked, a pen spinning on her fingertips effortlessly. We were at the office reading a medical report of a patient. I couldn't focus and with Ronaldo keeping an eye on everyone and by everyone- I mean- everyone in the room, it felt like Vicenzio was just around the corner ready to pounce without seeing it coming.
"Your guard is more uptight than that Milos guy. Sheesh!" She commented looking at Ronaldo who was watching a patient in a freaking walker pass by. I let out a deep breath, closing my eyes as I huffed.
"Something's going to happen. I swear. I can't stop thinking about it."
"Girl, we're here for you. No matter what happens, we'll do our best to be there for you, okay? Just tell us if you need anything." She tried to comfort me and I sent her a smile even though I still was not convinced that this was just me overreacting. I have a feeling in my guts and I couldn't deny it.
My shift finally came to an end with Blaze giving me an earful of lecture. Do this. Do that. Watch your back. As if I wasn't watching my back already. Ronaldo was already waiting for me by the door when I got out of the office, his back stiff and his eyes on high alert.
"Ronaldo, will you relax? You're not helping me." I told him as he gestured for me to walk first.
"I will once we're out of public. You're too exposed for any threats right now." He replied as we walked by the hallway. All eyes were on us and it was obvious it was because of his intimidating presence. If Milos was here, we can walk out of here with people stopping by their tracks. Milos was a tense guy and I thought Ronaldo was more relaxed but when he's on his job, Ronaldo was pretty tough to break out of his goal which was to protect me.
"Dotoressa Kairis?" An intern approached me with her eyes full of uncertainty. She was clutching a folder full of papers and she looked flustered. Her hair was pulled into a bun secured in a hair net and her face was clean of any make- up. She's pretty and she looked innocent, a fresh face in this world full of pressure.
"Yes. That's me. Can I help you?" I sensed my guard took a step beside me and she stepped back, taking a glance at him before her attention went back to me.
"Dotoressa Speranza wants to see you?"
"What for?"
"She says she has a patient in her clinic duty. She wants to talk to Dotorre Blaze but he's out now. You're the one available at the moment and she needs to talk to one of his team as soon as possible."
"Is the patient in the clinic already?" I asked and she nodded multiple times.
"Yes, ma'am."
"Okay. Good. Ronaldo, please wait here for a moment. I'll check the patient."
"But..."
"It's a patient and they need second opinion. Don't worry." He sighed and he grabbed his phone before checking the time.
"Okay. I'll wait for you there. Signore Carini will be here any moment now." Wait. He's coming here? What for?
"Why? Why would he come here?"
"He's taking his grandfather here for a check- up."
"Oh. Okay. Just wait there. I'll be out as soon as possible. Oh! By the way. Can you go back to the office? I forgot my white coat." I smiled at him and he nodded. He told me he'll be back as soon as he can and dashed back to the office. The intern directed me to where the patient was waiting and she told me Speranza was there also. I just hope she won't start asking for any gossips again because I'm tired of here making things up and giving information to the media. Elda was so angry when she found out she was getting interviews because of my relationship with Emil as if I was close with her. Elda even called her a leech and well, I won't say it doesn't fit her. The intern knocked on the door and announced my arrival. A faint "come in" inside was heard and it was my cue to enter. Turning the knob around, I opened the door and stepped inside. I froze on my step, silence making a deafening sound in my ears. How could this be?
"Sorry, Ma'am!" The intern cried meekly before she pushed me forward and closed the door. I turned and tried opening the door but it was held shut.
"You like to run away from your problems, don't you, Beatrice?" Dotoressa Speranza chuckled making me stop struggling to open the door. I turned around and faced them, my body going tense as seconds passed by.
"You like to hurt people, don't you, Doctor Speranza?" I addressed her with anger. How can she do this to me? Clearly, she was entertained by what she had done by the way her lips curved up in a sadistic smile.
"What? You don't want me bringing Ezekiel here?" She cackled like an evil witch. This woman was a sadistic one. She liked hurting interns and torturing them and here I was not an intern anymore but she had caused me pain.
"What are you doing here, Zeke?" My voice was stern not wanting to waver at the man who physically abused me. I clenched my hands together into fists, trying my best to control my anger at the both of them.
"I came to visit. I'm still the owner's son here. Fired or not, I can still visit."
"Then go walk around and visit. I don't have time for this." I was just about to turn when he spoke.
"Please, let's talk, Beatrice. I miss you."
