Doll sat in the snow, completely dumbfounded as she slowly comprehended what had just happened. The murder drone stood there with its head hanging low, the silver haired head it shouldn't even have considering that she had just vaporised it.
She got up, cautiously. Expecting the monster to reboot at any second and butcher her then and there, however it didn't. Well it did reboot, just it didn't decide to butcher her.
The murder drones yellow eyes looked around in confusion before settling on the worker drone in from of it.
"Umm hey, do you... know what just happened?" It asked her in an abashed sounding voice, it's clawed hand rubbing the back of its head.
Doll blinked at it a couple time as she was again dumbfounded by the strangeness of this murder drone.
"... What?" She asked as she stood upright, holding onto the Pulse Crossbow tightly with one hand. Doll was not the smallest Drone in the colony but she was still tiny compared the apparently passive murder machine that was a few feat away from her.
"Well, your new to our squad right? And I can't remember the past five minutes of my life so...?" The murder drone pointed on of its fingers at the hard hat wearing worker drone before continuing. He couldn't really tell what she was, his visuals only showing a black glitchy silhouette and a large yellow question mark over her but he put that aside.
"I haven't even introduced myself, I'm Serial Designation N. The third member of... pilot J's squad." N smiled warmly at her as he saluted, his hand up to his head and obscuring the damaged headband behind it. Something about the smile looked forced to Doll, was this all a ploy to make her trust him she mused?
Doll was about to say something back when the pain in her hand returned, the acid still slowly eating it's way through the metal and making an audible hissing noise as it did. She hissed through her teeth at this and dropped her crossbow on the snow as she clutched her wrist.
N saw this and sighed with barely hidden exasperation before telling Doll the very useful information of
"You know you can just pop your hand in your mouth, we have saliva that neutralises the acid.".
"... I think I... cut my tongue?" Doll responded, she didn't trust the idea of putting her melting hand into her mouth of all places and this murder drone would probably believe this excuse. Unfortunately the only place she was going to get some of their special saliva was his mouth, it would be very awkward to ask that. Awkward to the point that Doll had the stupid thought of just cutting the arm off instead of asking. N made the choice easy for her.
"... I... I could... Help. Maybe?" N sputtered out as he looked worriedly at the growing hole in his new squad mates hand.
So he did just that, both of them in the pod since Doll was curious of the inside and because of the shared thought that being seen in this extremely awkward position would be damaging to any reputation they had.
Doll slid her hand out of N's mouth after a minute, glad that it was no longer damaged at all but internally grimacing at the method of fixing it.
"Neat, I love doing new things... I guess." N said as the pair sat in the two chairs in the only room in the drop pod. One side of the pods inside being covered in a large undamaged screen display with a set of buttons under it while the other walls were mostly unadorned. Except for a set of stolen steel shelves, these had a collection of random junk on them.
Doll wipped the remaining saliva on her pants before asking
"Umm N... You said squad mates, doesn't squad mean four?".
"Yep, their are four of us. I can't wait to introduce you to all of them once they get back." N answered her question happily.
Doll had a sinking feeling. She couldn't even kill one and now there are four, this was very bad. The other three probably wouldn't be as nice as N was and Doll guessed that he was only this nice because of the damaged headband thing.
She had to get as much information on them as possible before she gets out of here so Doll asked.
"What, are the other three like?"
"Oh, you'll love them." He said with a wave of his hand as he began to tell Doll about his squadmates with, his voice filled with enthusiasm.
"First there's J, the squad leader." He states blandly, remembering the last time he had interacted with his pigtail haired boss.
The pair were out on a hunt, cold wind blowing through the ruined buildings and shifting the snow around their feet as they stood a few metres apart. J had just finished killing a couple of workers and was now eating the insides of one, picking the wires out of its opened stomach as she did.
"Ahh, all in a night's work, eh N." J exclaimed as she stopped eating and looked over the corpses, her two yellow eyes half hidden under her ever so precious pilot cap.
J then asked her subordinate something as she stalked though the wreckage they had caused with a clipboard in her hands, counting the corpses as she went.
"Ohh, um... I think so???" N coughed slightly after he answered her, N still standing in the same place as J slowly walked further away.
"I saw a few go down that street, clean them up and then return to the spire with their bodies... Or else." She threatened him, raising her voice so that he could hear her before grabbing a blue hard hat off of one of the corpses and flying away.
Doll listened to everything N had said about his squad leader, noting that the blue hard hat that was mentioned now sat on one of the shelves in the pod. A few other coloured hard hats were also present, was J collecting them Doll thought.
"And the other ones..?" She then asked N, who had paused for a bit to gauge her reaction to what he said about his very cool leader.
"Oh yeah, V is way cooler then J." The murder drone grinned as he said this, totally believing that this new squad member was going to agree with him.
N now started to speak about his friend V, remembering the last time he had interacted with the attractive but lazy glutton of a disassembly drone.
V was lounging on the roof of one of the skyscrapers, sprawled out flat across an air vent as it pushed out a slightly warm breeze that contrasted with the cold night. Her red scarf slightly flowing upwards from the force of the air vent as N landed on the roof, having finally found her after she had ditched the hunt they were on.
"Hey V... J wants to know if you... Got your kill quota before you left, us." He asked her, taking a second to hesitantly walk over to her as he did this. There were a few holes in the concrete roof that he had to avoid to do this.
"Ugh, this count?" V asked nonchalantly, before she rolled over and grabbed a single worker drone from behind the vent she was on. Then rolling back towards N with it in her clawed hands, she yawned loudly as she did this. N noticed that the body was still in near mint condition except for the single bullet hole in its head.
"Yeah it does." N smiled and gave her a thumbs up before continuing to the question he thought he already knew the answer to
"But is that all you killed?".
"Yah huh." V blandly stated back as she began eating the head of the drone, quietly crunching the metal between her own metal fangs. Making sure to avoid getting any of the precious liquid on her scarf as the drone ate slowly, taking her time with the meal that was once another sentient robot.
Doll took all this in as she watched N regale the story with a small yellow blush on his visor, which he didn't notice he was showing until a second or two after he had finished telling it.
"Umm hehe, V is really nice." N quelled his blush and blinked at Doll as he said this, slightly worried about how he still couldn't get a clean look at her but pushing that away again to talk about the last squad member.
"Hmm, right." Doll checked her internal clock as she said this, wanting to see how long she had spent here listening to N talk. 3:21 AM.
"Yeah V is so cool that I have a crush on her... WAIT!!! don't tell anyone ok, pinky promise." N looked a little panicked as he held his pinky out to Doll, waiting for the aforementioned pinky promise.
Doll obliged, not like she would ever have to break this promise since she would be leaving very soon. As soon as N told her about the last member of the squad. They both locked their smallest of four metal fingers, do they even count as pinkies they both thought as they did this.
"Thanks... Umm?" N trialled off, unable to put a name to the glitchy figure infront of him even though he had been talking with her for a good while now.
"Doll." she finished N's sentence and told him her name automatically, only comprehending what she did after she had done it. Why she did this Doll didn't know, but the red eyed worker drone quickly returned her attention to N when her spoke again.
"... That's not a normal name for a Disassembly Drone." Doll was a little taken back about the name remark but stopped herself from speaking when he moved on to talking about the last member of the squad instead.
"Last squad member is Rebecca, she is... Really clingy honestly, but still cool!" N resumed his storytelling as he remembered the last time he and the high octane disassembly drone had interacted.
It was midnight, both moon's casting their light across the cities ruins, N was hanging upside down by his tail from a lamp post, watching as the bright blue disassembly drone flew towards him with a bisected worker drone in her hands.
"Hi Rebecca! You ready?" N shouted out to her when she glided into hearing range, she dropped the corpse onto the street as she landed on the ground just below N.
"Uhh, sure sweets." She smirked up at him as she called him the oft disliked pet name the flirty blue eyed killer had chosen for him. Not that N even liked her back, but he hadn't told her that.
N coughed loudly before gesturing down the street at a set of hastily made targets, each one was a worker drone head hanging from a lamp post. The small ornaments swaying in the wind.
"J wants you practice your aim so. I made these for you." N grinned as he admitted what he had even called her here for.
"Target practice... Reallyyyy!?!!" The blue haired drone whined as she stretched backwards, the single purple highlight in her hair showing itself to N as she did this. Before switching her left hand to her least favourite weapon, The 50 calibre heat sniper with a groan of annoyance.
"Whhyyy, You know how much I suck with this thing." She complained again as she fiddled with the pink jumper tied around her waist with her free hand. The jumper was the largest piece of clothing she had on with her top half only covered by a tied up at the bottom red shirt.
Her metal legs were barely covered with the black paint designs, unlike the other two female members of the squad and were mostly left bare. With Rebecca's black paint only going up to halfway up her calf and being cut off by a blue and black warning strip of paint instead of the yellow and black standard issue.
N's usual positivity showed itself as he tried to make Rebecca feel a little better about what was about to happen.
"You don't suck, this is just a chance to get better.". He told her as the targets continued to dangle from their posts down the street.
Rebecca than proceeded to miss seventeen out of twenty shots and lace the street with several new damages across the next half an hour. Not that she ment to do any of that of course.
"And her name is... Rebecca?" Doll asked N once he had finished, the russian worker drone had a slight suspicion that she had heard that name before. Even though there was no one in the colony called Rebecca, she didn't remember anyone called that at least.
"Yep, that's her name." N replied to the question, completely missing Doll's expression of confusion as he did. Probably because he still couldn't see her properly.
Doll then checked the time again 3:23 AM, the large red words flashing across her vision. Alright, she thought. Time to get outta here, but how to make him not follow me?
Doll thought for a second on this as N asked her
"So, do you want a tour of this place?"
"Oh... Sure." She answered back to him, only half focusing on what was said to her as plans of heading back to the colony without the murder drones following her came to mind.
"And that's where J keeps the oil reserves." Doll zoned back into the conversation after a minute, not remembering anything N had said before this. He was pointing towards the wall with one finger, there was nothing on the wall so she assumed he ment somewhere outside the pod.
But he had perked her interest.
"Why do you- uh we, need oil?" Doll quickly corrected herself as she asked him. The girl could hazard a guess but wanted a direct confirmation before she left.
"Because without the workers WARM SWEET OIL we will overheat and die." N reveals, bearing metal fangs and the yellow X on his visor as he mentioned the apparently warm and sweet liquid that coursed through a drones internal parts. Warm and sweet, she mulled over those words for some reason, perhaps she would find out one day but as of now the reason eluded her.
"... That's weird. The worker drones can exist without needing to refuel on oil. Why couldn't JCJenson make that so for you gu- I mean us." Doll stumbled over the last few words as she inquired on this obvious design flaw. N tilted his head at her, thinking as the coat wearing murder drone slowly blinked multiple times.
"Umm... I guess we would have to ask the company?" He hesitantly stated, his hands resting on the dusty buttons on the table next to him. Doll had a strange feeling, something was off. To bad she couldn't speak up before a thud and a yell was heard outside.
"Hey sweets, I'm back!"
