I woke up to everything the same way it had been the night before. The room was still as dimly lit as it had been, and when I looked towards the door I could hear the echo of it's slam.
I looked around for any slight sight of Courtney, but she was nowhere to be seen. I thought about picking up my phone to text her- but stopped myself.
So, last night didn't go the way I was hoping, but I had to stick it through. If last night wouldn't work, I would have to keep working until I was successful.
As I sat up in my bed, I heard the door creak open.
Courtney strolled into the room awkwardly, her hair still vividly bright blue.
She looked at me, and nodded slightly. "Hi," She spoke softly as she set her bag down.
"I thought you were getting hair bleach," I noted. "And where were you last night?"
"I decided I liked my hair the way it was, and I'm happy about it. I'm going to keep it like this. I stayed the night at a friend's house."
"You have friends in Australia?" I raised and eyebrow suspiciously.
Courtney shrugged, her ears turning bright pink. "Yeah," She squeaked.
"You stayed the night with Calum, didn't you?" I furrowed my eyebrows.
Courtney bit her lips and twiddled her fingers, but didn't say anything.
"So you did?" I looked at her.
"I never said that," She said softly.
"Okay then say you didn't!" I shot.
"Ashton, why does it matter to you if I stay with Calum? He's a friend and if you and I got into a fight you can't expect me to not be upset, so I went to Calum's house and he let me stay the night, that was all." Courtney claimed.
I rolled my eyes, crossing my arms. "Right."
"That was all!" She raised her voice a tad.
"You know you're just as bad as him!" I yelled.
"What's that supposed to mean?!" She screamed at me. "Calum's not bad at all! You're the one who messed up your relationship!"
"He's the one who's overreacting!"
"Overreacting or not, Ashton, you hurt him! And even if you think he's taking it to far, you caused him emotional pain, and you need to apologize for that! Frankly, I'm on Calum's side on this one! You're at fault here!"
"Oh, of course you'd side with Calum!" I scoffed. "Why don't you just date him instead?!"
"Because I'm not trying to date Calum!" She yelled, throwing her hands into the air. "You know, Ashton, I'm trying here! I really, really am! I want with all my heart to make you happy but you're making me feel like shit, you know that?"
"Because you're treating me like shit!" I countered.
"How? What on Earth did I suddenly do to make you feel like I was mistreating you? Our relationship was so perfect, and then you got so pissed at me!"
"Because you seem closer to Calum than you do to me! I was the one who you had messaged you for so long and got to know you! I was the one who originally was your friend, and I was the one you wanted to date! So why do you all of a sudden seem so fond of Calum?!"
"I'm not fond of him!" She yelled. "I don't like Calum like that!"
"Do you?"
"No! I-I just--"
"You just-- save it! Just date Calum already everyone's already waiting for it!"
"Who's everyone? Ashton you and I never even made our relationship public!"
"Good, because it probably won't last long!"
That finished her. Courtney shrunk up. Her arms fell and all the redness drained from her smooth face.
"What- what do you mean?" She whispered.
I laid back down in my bed, and pulled the covers over me, hiding my face. "Never mind," I muttered.
"Ashton-"
"-I said never mind!" I snapped, not moving out from my blankets.
I heard Courtney sigh. After a moment, she broke our silence. "You and the boys have a radio interview in four hours. I'll see you there." She spoke softly. The door creaked open softly, and closed, unlike the previous night.
I sat up in my bed and ran my hands through my hair, now alone. "What am I doing?" I murmured.
A couple of minutes later I reached for my crutches and hobbled out of my bed and into my bathroom. I took a shower with great difficulty, then got dressed and ate breakfast.
I looked at my phone and called for Luke to give me a ride to the radio station two hours before we went on the air, as it's best for all of us to get there early.
"Good to see you up and moving," Luke chuckled as I hopped into his car.
"What do you mean?" I asked, smiling slightly.
"All of us haven't really seen you since the show, you've been kinda M-I-A. We all just assumed you were dealing with your leg. How's it feeling?" He asked, pulling out into the street.
"Better," I noted. "Just sore, and I'm still trying to adjust to this cast." I chuckled slightly.
Luke and I caught up all the way to the radio station, as it had been so long since we had spoken one on one.
When we parked, he helped me get out of the car and into the building, where Michael, Calum, and Courtney were all already waiting.
"Hi there, you two!" A small pudgy man greeted us, walking out of one of the business rooms. "Harrison Thurman, it's nice to meet you two." He shook Luke and I's hands. "So, we're going to take you to the studio in a couple of minutes, and we'll walk you through a couple of the things we're going to do." He smiled.
The five of all nodded and then sat down in the waiting area.
"Oh, geez, Courtney- I'm so sorry, I didn't even ask, I was so rude- here, you can sit next to Ashton," Luke immediately stood up, clearly unaware what had happened.
Courtney and I made an awkward eye contact, and it was clear that neither of us had any intention to tell anyone about our fights.
Courtney took the seat next to me, after thanking Luke. I could see Calum glancing at Courtney nervously, which made my stomach turn in a weird way. I couldn't tell if I was jealous, guilty, sad, or what. All I knew is I felt something.
After a moment, Mr. Thurman took us back to the radio studio. We each had our own microphone and seat. Courtney stood in the back with our manager.
The interviewer, Jack Nixton, walked us through a couple of the main bullet points of the show, and soon we had only five minutes until we started. Luke and Michael began talking, as they were sitting next to each other.
Calum and I didn't say anything. I pulled out my phone after a moment, and Calum joined in Luke and Michael's conversation.
"Alright, boys, you ready?" Nixton asked.
The four of us nodded in unison as one of the sound guys counted down, then pointed at Nixon.
"Welcome, welcome, hey, thanks for listening! I'm Jack Nixton, and you're listening to radio 57.2! Today I'm here with the legendary band 5 Seconds of Summer, boys, how are you?"
"We're pretty good," Luke chuckled. "Just finished our final show of the tour."
"Yes, yes, you were on a world tour, weren't you, for the past year?" Nixton asked.
"Yeah, a world tour." Michael said.
"And was that, what, very draining?"
"I think it was for sure draining, but at the same time, it was energizing." Calum spoke. "You know, I think the draining part is the jet lag, and the constant traveling, but playing a show every couple of nights to so many fans was so energizing it made everything so worth it."
The three of us corroborated.
"And, Ashton, I see you're injured." Nixton acknowledged me.
"Oh, yeah." I chuckled a tad.
"What happened, would you like to lay down the story to us?"
"Uh, well, I dislocated my femur, so, I basically dislocated my leg."
"And this happened before the last show, correct?" Nixton asked.
"Yeah, it happened the very same day we landed in Australia. Same night."
"So how did you play the last show?"
"Well, I actually switched my drum kit around and played like a leftie would."
"And was that hard?"
I nodded. "Yeah, but, you know, like Calum said, I think the fact that we're surrounded by constant positivity made me able to make it through that show. I didn't want to let down all of those fans who had been waiting for about over a year to see us, I would've felt so guilty, so it was kind of our only choice. And- well, we made it through." I chuckled.
"Well, I give you credit, you definitely don't give up, that's for sure!" He laughed. "So, do tell, what are all of your plans now that you're off tour?"
"Well, we have been working on our third album, which won't come out until 2017. But we've worked on it." Michael noted.
We finished the rest of the interview as though nothing wrong had ever happened even though it had. Calum and I played it off like neither of us were in a fight, and everyone bought it.
After the radio show, however, Calum was the first to leave the room, and I was the last.
Luke drove me back, where I sat lonesomely on my bed.
I don't know what I'm doing. I thought. This is never going to work. I have no clue how to make up with my best friend, and he's pissed.
