February 21st 1777
Today is the day of the burning. It is not midnight yet. There is still a little while until then, but Allard and I are making our way to meet up with Nara, Joy, and Lacey in the field. We are crouched down next to a stump while waiting on the three girls.
"Are you nervous, Alice," Allard asks me.
"I must say I am," I say. "We could get into great trouble for this."
"Yes we could." He doesn't say more. He hasn't been too entirely excited for this like I would have expected him to be. He almost seems reluctant. I on the other hand am unusually excited.
A short while later I see three figures jogging in the field. The shortest of them, most likely Nara, is looking around and calling out for Allard and I.
"We're over here," Allard says standing up. I do the same. They run over to us. We do the same to them.
"Alright," Nara says once the five of us gather. "Let's hurry to town! It's dark so it may take some time." We nod and set out. The moon is nothing but a sliver in the sky. I guess the men chose this day because of that. There is just enough light to see but not so much that someone can see you easily.
Twenty or so minutes pass and we make it to town with little trouble. We tripped a few times but no injuries. We stand on the outskirts behind a building.
"We have to be sneaky," Nara says. Mischievousness fills her voice."We don't want anyone to see us. Soldiers or civilians."
"Why not civilians," Allard asks.
"Those are the people who are setting the flag on fire. If they see us, they might send us home. So stay close and stay hidden." Mischievous she may sound, there is also an aura of seriousness radiating from her. My guess is that this means a lot to her.
We follow behind the young brunette as she almost expertly weaves through the town. Crouching, running, skipping, spinning, crawling. It's as if she rehearsed this over and over.
We end up nestled amongst trees and bushes next to the apothecary. The bushes are lined up in a row in front of us white the trees are more scattered around us. We are off side of town hall though the flag can be seen hanging limply on its mast.
"Does anyone have the time," Joy asks.
"My guess is half past twelve," Lacey's soft voice answers. "Isn't this the time you said the burning would take place, Nara?"
"Yes," Nara says slowly. "I wonder what is taking stop long."
"It could be that they are taking their time," I say. "Or it could be that it is not quite time yet." As if to ease Nara's concerns, a short figure appears next to the flag. With the slight bit of moonlight, I can see the longish brown hair. Their face looks familiar, though I cannot tell if it is male or female. In their, most likely his, hands is a small lantern. A tiny flame is blazing.
"It's starting," Nara's excited voice exclaims quietly. "It's starting! It's starting!" Her and Hot bounce up and down. The other of us bend forward against the bushes.
The man, I am assuming it is a man, opens the lantern and grabs onto the corner of the flag and brings it to the flame. It takes a short while, but the flag catches. The fire starts to travel up and the young man leaves. Seven or eight minutes later, the flag is fully ablaze and glowing beautifully in the darkness. From what I can see, there are men now gathered to watch it burn.
At least, that is what I thought. It doesn't look as if they are stopping there; they are destroying more than just the flag. They are destroying the entire town hall. Breaking windows, crumbling bricks, setting fire to furniture. They were going all out.
I look over to the four. The three girls wear a look of pride and happiness. It almost looks as if they want to go out and help. Nara most of all. The smile on her face is wider than ever. Allard looks more. . .troubled. As if unsure on how to feel. I guess in a way they were burning his country's flag. Or maybe it is because is a loyalist. Actually born in Britain at that. How did I feel about all of this?
I guess the simplest answer would be happy.
