Nothing happened at first. The sobbing stopped right after you said the name.
"(Y/N) I don't thi-" Newt started to say but you shushed him.
"River?" You asked again.
The closet door slowly cracked open just enough for a little kid to stick their head out of. A pigtail popped out followed by a beautiful, warm chocolate brown eye.
"(Y/N)?" Yup. It was River. The way she said your name is exactly how you remembered it.
"River!" You exclaimed. You sat up, ignoring the excoriating pain in your side and scalp. You held your arms out wide to hug River when she came over.
"(Y/N)!" River squeaked excitedly. She pushed the door open and came running at you at full speed. She slammed into you, tackling you back into a laying position. The pain was so bad you actually felt heat coming off of it.
"River. I'm happy to see you and all but, can you please get off of me?" You asked, pain in your voice.
"No! I want more hugs!" River squealed.
"Newt. Help please?"
"Newt?" River shot up so she was hovering over you. "Newtie?"
"It's cute when she says it." Newt said from beside you.
River's head shot towards the direction Newt's voice came from. "Newtie!" She ran over and hugged him. "I haven't seen you in forever! Where have you been? (Y/N) told me you went somewhere far away, but she would bring you back."
"You could say that." Newt hugged her back.
"Hey guys! We got the blank- Who is that?" Minho said as he walked in with everybody else. They stood there for a second, confused.
River was so excited she looked like she was going to have a heart attack. "You're all here!"
"Wait. River?" Minho said dropping the blankets.
"Minho!" River ran over and Minho picked her up. She had to be really light.
"Oh my God, you've gotten so big! I haven't seen you since you were a baby!"
"I missed you!"
"Missed you, too, Princess."
"What happened? One day I woke up and you weren't there. But I saw you on the big TV in the dining room. (Y/N) said you were famous and that I would meet you again one day. And she was right!"
"Famous, aye? Like the sound of that." Minho put her down and next she ran to Thomas.
"Please tell me you remember me." Thomas prayed.
"I do. You controlled the computers with Teresa. You showed me how to work them. That's how I stopped the mind chips." River pointed to her head.
"That's right." Thomas reached down and hugged her. She moved onto Winston.
"Hi, Winston." River held out her hand for a high five.
"Sup, Girly?" Winston said and gave her a high five.
River next turned to Gally. She made mean face at him. He made one back. River made hers more intense. This went on for another couple of seconds until Gally reached out and tickled her stomach. "Gally! Stop! I have to say hi to Fry!"
"Okay, but, don't hurt him." Gally said.
"I'll try."
River turned to Fry. "Who burnt the pancakes?"
"Was Gally in the kitchen again?" Fry joked.
"Hey! I'm not that bad." Gally protested.
"Yeah you are."
River giggled and went to Alby. "Hi, Alby."
"Hey, Short-Stack." Alby grinned. You never heard him say that before but you thought it was adorable.
"Put anybody in the Pit today?"
"No. How do you know about the Pit?"
River knitted her eyebrows and leant her head to one side. "What do you mean? We started our own language, me and (Y/N). After You and Newtie left."
She's the one that started the Glade Slang? And you don't get mad at her for saying Newtie? Minho asked telepathically.
Yes. It was creative for a two year old. You said. Then you realized, How long have you been gone?
It's cute when she says it. Newt said.
"Hey - ah - River? How old are you?" You asked, scared of the answer.
"I'm four!" River said holding up four fingers. Then her face fell along with her hand. "Why don't you remember?"
"I wasn't there River. I'm sorry. When was your birthday?"
"Last week."
"I can't believe we missed it. I missed out on four years of this little girls life," Minho said, going to pick her up. He stopped when River winced and pulled away. Only then did you realize she had bruises, scratches, and scrapes all over her arms and legs, her right shoe was missing, her right eye was a little puffy, and she was dragging her left foot behind her as she walked. How did you not notice? The guys seemed to just notice it, too.
"River. What happened?" You asked gesturing for her to come over, she obliged. She sat down on the ground next to you, her left foot out in front of her, her arms crossed, and she shivered, as if remembering a bad event.
"WICKED put me out there with those scary creatures. The didn't hurt me, but they chased me. I ran in here before they could catch me. I got in through that window," She pointed to the window Gally was sleeping under. It was opened just enough for someone as small as River to fit through, "But I fell a lot and one pulled me down by my ankle. It hurts really bad."
"What creatures exactly?" Winston asked. Reasonable question.
"They looked like us, but more like zombies. I think they're called Cranks. They laughed funny, they walked funny, they did everything funny." A silence fell over the group. The anger was thick in the air like smoke.
"Anything come in the Box, Thomas?" Newt asked through gritted teeth.
"Well, blankets, food supplies, wood, I'm pretty sure there are like five to six boxes of Band- Aids and Ace Bandages, um. . . and bubble wrap." Thomas said.
"Bubble wrap?" You asked. You were studying River's ankle when you heard bubble wrap you gave Thomas that look that said 'You're shucking me.'
"Yes. Bubble wrap. Chuck pointed it out."
"Where is that kid, anyway?" Gally asked looking around.
"There he is." River said. She pointed at the window again, but this time, outside the window, you could see Chuck standing in front of the Maze entrance. You knew this wasn't going to end out well if you all just stood and stared. Newt probably had the same idea.
"Go get him!" Newt said, waving his hands at the door, "We are not loosing a Glader today or any other day! Go!"
"Chuck!" Thomas called to the kid as he ran out, with the others.
You watched as the group of older boys made their way to Chuck. Slowly advancing. You could tell something wasn't right.
"Something isn't right. I can fell it." You muttered to Newt.
"Yeah," Newt replied with a sigh, "something always is."
Thomas and the others were now trying to communicate with Chuck, who seemed to not be listening and zoned out.
"Okay. We should fix your ankle." You said to River, "Its broken. You'll be fine it we give it a make-shaft cast. But you have to promise me to keep it on at all times no matter what, okay? Or this wont heal."
"Okay, (Y/N). I promise." River smiled, it was a fake smile to cover up the pain coming from her ankle. You could tell but she was trying, and you gave her credit.
"Grab me some wood, an Ace Bandage, and a couple Band-Aids?" You asked Newt.
"Sure." Newt said and managed to stand on one foot. You caught him as he was about to fall.
"That's not what I meant."
"That's why I did it."
Newt hobbled away and you giggled. When he was out of earshot, River turned to you. "You like him don't you?"
The question caught you off guard. "What?"
"You like him?"
You felt like you could trust River. "Promise you wont tell?" You bit your lip.
"Promise." River smiled. A real enjoyable smile. And at that moment, you knew exactly what to do.
How to get out of the Maze.
