The wind howled across the plains. On top of a hill stood a lone figure. They stared out at the stars above them. They let out a sigh as the wind ran past them, ruffling their hair. Their ears twitched in the cold.
"Hey, demon child! Get your ass over here!" A shrill voice yelled.
The child, Onyx, turned around. "Coming, mama..."
Onyx sighed, looking back at the stars one more time, before walking down the hill and into the village. They subconsciously pulled their black tail close to their side. Everyone hated them for not being normal.
Onyx was a complicated child, to say the least. Their parents had been unable to conceive and went looking for other methods. One method involved making a deal with what most called a demon in order to have a child. Onyx never understood why their parents didn't assume they would be part demon or whatever that thing was that they asked for help. But they were.
It was pretty obvious when they were born that something was wrong. Their ears and tail were black. Not brown like everyone else's. Their eyes glowed red at times. Everyone immediately began to call them cursed. A bad omen. And their parents agreed. They treated them horribly all the same. Onyx didn't understand what they did wrong. Why were they being punished? They weren't the one who asked to be born.
Onyx walked into the village, trailing behind their mother. She didn't even look at them. She just kept walking. Onyx couldn't remember their mother ever looking at them kindly.
"Ew, the freak still is alive."
"Why can't you get picked off by something already?"
"No one wants a demon here."
Onyx was used to the comments. They swore one day they would get revenge. One day they wouldn't suffer anymore. One day they could be free. If only that day could come sooner. They wanted to get away already.
They entered their house. Their mother and father were standing there. Neither looked very happy. Onyx was used to that. They never looked happy to see their child that they had so desperately wanted.
"Demon. It's about time we get rid of you." Their mother said, "The village will feel much safer without you around here."
Onyx was confused. Get rid of them? Was their mother going to try and kill them? Why? Why did she hate them so much? They never asked for any of this. They just wanted to live their life.
"Now, just stand there and let us put you out of your misery." Their father held a knife.
Onyx reacted instinctively to the threat. They lashed out as their father got close, grabbing the knife and ramming it through his chest. Onyx growled and pulled it out, relishing in the pain they had caused. They turned on their mother now. She was scared. Serves her right.
"You want me to be a monster so bad... then fine. I'll be exactly what you want." Onyx spoke up for the first time.
They didn't give their mother a chance to reply before rushing at her and killing her as well. The sounds of the fight drew in onlookers. Onyx was rushed at by the other villagers. Called a murderer. They killed them all. They didn't care. Everyone one of them deserved to die for how they had been treated.
...
Onyx blinked. They were staring out at a group of kids. One was being bullied. It had brought back all those memories.
It had been a while since then. Onyx had been five when that had happened. Now they were 16. They had run away from that village and kept moving. They took up odd jobs, mostly murder related jobs, to make ends meet. However, being a wanted serial killer on your planet made things difficult. Onyx ended up fleeing on a ship one day. They had landed on Earth. Japan. It was a strange place. And one so blissfully unaware of the vast galaxy above them. No one knew about the countless life forms out there.
Perhaps that was for the best. Onyx had learned well how to hide their ears and tail. No one ever suspected a thing. And if they ever did get caught, it wasn't hard to lie and say it was fake. Learning a new language had been easy enough as well. They got it down very fast. Most didn't bat an eye when conversing with them anymore.
Back to the matter at hand though. Onyx hated seeing children get picked on like they had been. Once the bullies had left, Onyx approached the child. They wanted to make sure they were alright.
"Those kids are pretty mean." Onyx knelt down to be eye level with the crying child. "But, you don't deserve that. What's your name, little one?"
"Tsurugi."
They were a bit surprised how easily the kid told them his name. Didn't his parents teach him not to talk to strangers?
"I'm Onyx." Onyx smiled. "How old are you?"
"I'm ten."
"And you get picked on a lot?"
Tsurugi nodded, "They don't like me. Say I'm weird cause I wanna go to space."
Onyx smiled even more. "You wanna go into space, huh? That's pretty cool, kid. You wanna know a secret?"
Tsurugi nodded, his eyes wide.
"I'm from a distant planet in space. We're what you would call a fox." Onyx showed off their tail and ears. "If you go to space, you can meet a lot of interesting people just like me. Don't give up your dreams, kid."
"Woah..." Tsurugi reached out and ran his hand over their tail. "It's so cool."
"Indeed."
"How old are you?" Tsurugi asked.
"I'm 16. I don't know if our years are the same but I believe so."
"You're really cool, onee... onii... uh, what... are you?"
Onyx laughed at the question, "Neither. But, you can call me whatever term you want."
"I'll think about it."
"You do that, kid."
Onyx hadn't expected to ever run into him again. But they did. And they kept running into him. It was as if fate wanted them to interact. Onyx didn't question it. They quite liked the kid. It was refreshing to have a bundle of energy around after so long.
Unfortunately as they grew closer, Onyx learned the reality of his family. They too hated his idea of trying to go to space. He wasn't given much support from anyone. Onyx couldn't help but pity him. Why couldn't anyone understand how passionate he was and just let him be? That kid could really go places if he tried. Onyx really believed that.
...
Years flew by. Onyx had mostly settled down and made Earth their new home. They had no choice really. They couldn't abandon Tsurugi. The kid, now adult, really liked them. Looked up to them as an older sibling.
And Onyx was proud. He had managed to get to space. Managed to see the world the way he wanted. But when he came back, it was with bad news.
"There's these guys called like Jark Matter or something. They're trying to rule the galaxy." Tsurugi was explaining.
Onyx listened. They knew of Jark Matter. They had been very newly starting when they had been a kid themself. Looks like things were starting to get a lot more serious now.
"Hmm... I'm not sure what exactly you could do about them. You'd need to create an entire team to fight against them. Doesn't sound too easy." Onyx replied.
"We need to try."
"Sorry. We?"
Tsurugi blinked at them in confusion, "Yeah? Are you... not going to help? Don't you care?"
Onyx sighed, "Look, kid. I'm not exactly savior material here. No one would want to work with me. I promise you that."
They hadn't ever disclosed their past to Tsurugi. There was not much reason too. Why did he need to know the person Onyx used to be? They had obviously changed since then. They had no reason to say much until now.
Most of the other planets would know about them. They had seen wanted posters in many different areas. No one would want to work with a wanted serial killer to save the galaxy.
"Why not?" Tsurugi questioned. Looks like they had no choice but to explain.
"I'm kind of a wanted serial killer on most planets. I don't think anyone from them would appreciate me being part of the team."
"Serial killer...?" Tsurugi repeated.
Onyx nodded. "Yeah... it's a long story."
"Still... I need you. I don't want to do this alone. Maybe... maybe you can make amends by saving the galaxy?"
"Don't say I didn't warn you."
Onyx had no idea what they had just signed up for. They were certain Tsurugi had no clue just what he had done either. Now they had the long task of going from system to system and trying to recruit an effort to fight back against Jark Matter. That was going be a long journey.
It took quite a few more years before they got much started in the way of collecting people to fight with them. Tsurugi did a lot of research along the way as to weapons and things of that nature. Onyx just watched for the most part, offering some suggestions here and there. They let him do the inventing and things.
...
On one planet which Onyx could care less about learning the name of, they split up. Tsurugi went off to another planet to go search there. Onyx stayed on this one and waited. They didn't go near civilization. They knew better than to do that.
They had yet to actually find anyone they deemed good enough for the task. It was quite annoying that they had yet to locate people that could be of use. Jark Matter was growing every day as they kept going on this journey.
Onyx was wandering around the forest on the planet when they stumbled across a weird formation. There was a statue that seemed very out of place. They inspected it. Nothing seemed strange other than the location. Maybe this was a special area to the inhabitants of this planet? Who knew.
They turned to walk away when a bright light shown behind them. They turned back to the statue. A weird globe of sorts was in the figure's hands. Onyx examined it. Just what was this thing? They tossed it in their pocket and decided they could deal with that later.
When Tsurugi returned, they learned he too had one of those globes now. And that he had almost died. The idiot. Apparently that thing saved him? And he was calling it a kyutama. Strange name.
"I found one too, actually." Onyx held out theirs.
"My word. We both have been chosen." Tsurugi smiled.
"How do we use these things though?" Onyx questioned.
"I have an idea. We need to stop and get supplies though."
"Lead the way."
Unfortunately that task took a while. A very long while. Tsurugi got himself caught and put in jail by Jark Matter. He got out and recruited yet another savior to the cause. Cuervo was this ones name. He stuck with them on their journey. He seemed to not mind the fact that Onyx was once a serial killer. That was nice.
But now they could use these weird kyutamas to transform? And something was said about them being immortal because of them? Onyx was lost on how any of this worked as well as how Tsurugi just seemed to know these things. Did his kyutama tell him that stuff? Maybe it did. Onyx wouldn't be surprised at this point. Nothing about this was normal in the slightest.
...
They had gathered a savior for each of the systems. There were 88 of them to fight this war. How many years had it been since they began this task? Onyx wasn't sure. They had been fighting Jark Matter for a while, but this was it. This was the biggest battle yet. Hopefully the one that would kill Don Armage and end this horror.
Onyx was hating every minute of this. They were setting up camp. They would be staying here for a while until they finally got to the day they would fight. No one exactly knew when that would be. But Onyx did know pretty much every savior hated them being so close.
The only ones who didn't were Tsurugi, Cuervo, and Orion. Those three were the only ones that treated them nicely. Onyx knew this was bound to happen. Why had they ever let Tsurugi get them to agree to this effort? It was too late to back out now.
Onyx went off on a walk. They wanted to clear their mind. The battle was seeming as though it might actually happen very soon. They wanted to be fully ready for the mess that was about to begin.
They paused from their walk by the sound of footsteps. Onyx turned to find one of the other saviors was following them. One of the saviors that hated them. Onyx regarded their presence warily. Why were they here?
"Before this battle starts, we need to get rid of you." They had told Onyx.
Onyx growled. The savior attacked them. Onyx didn't even blink as they blocked the blow and promptly snapped their neck. Then it all came crashing down. If anyone found out they had done this... it was over.
"Wow, look at that." An eerie voice spoke.
Onyx whipped around. "Don Armage."
Don Armage stood nearby in an actual form. "Correct. I see you are disliked by your comrades. So, why not join me? You can get revenge against them."
Get... revenge? Those words reminded them of that day they murdered their entire village for revenge. They were slowly falling back down that same path once more.
"You can give me the power to achieve revenge?" Onyx questioned.
Don Armage nodded. "Yes. You can have so much power. Much more than what you currently have."
The offer was enticing to them. They could make everyone pay for everything.
"If they want me to be a monster, might as well give them what they want." Onyx smiled.
"Welcome to Jark Matter, Akuma."
That name was fitting now. Before they loathed being called a demon but now it felt right. They'd take that name in stride.
Onyx walked over to Don Armage and accepted his outstretched hands. Power flowed through them at the touch. This was so much power. Finally. They could do anything they wanted. No one could ever stop them now.
"The battle is about to begin? Are you ready?"
"Of course. I'm more than ready to be the monster they so desperately want to see."
An hour later, the fight began. Onyx stood by the army of Jark Matter. No one seemed to notice them yet. Soon they would. Soon they would all see.
Both sides charged at each other. Onyx ran for any savior they saw. Their eyes all widened as they were struck down by Onyx. Onyx was amazed by the power they had. This was too easy to do now. It was almost no fun how easy it was to strike down people.
"Onii-chan...?"
Onyx paused. The battle felt so quiet around them as they turned to face Tsurugi. Tsurugi was transformed into his suit, but his emotions were quite clear. He was hurt.
"What are you... doing, onii-chan?" Tsurugi begged, rushing over and hugging them, "Why...?"
"I work for Jark Matter. This power is better than that lousy thing." Onyx shoved him away. They tossed their kyutama at his feet. They didn't need it anymore. Tsurugi picked it up and held it close.
He then cried out in frustration and attacked them. Onyx dodged all of his blows. Tsurugi was too emotional. His attacks were too predictable. Onyx tossed him away and vanished into the fray once more. They didn't want to fight him. He was the one person they couldn't hurt like that. He did nothing to deserve that.
The casualties were high on both sides, but the good side was losing. So many of them were dead. Many had fallen to Onyx's hands. Onyx watched as Tsurugi tried to attack Don Armage. It failed.
Onyx honestly thought this was the end for him, but Cuervo of all of them protected him as Don Armage fought back. Onyx watched as Tsurugi grew angry and attacked once more. Don Armage was hit. It was over, wasn't it?
Tsurugi left the battlefield, the few saviors that were alive followed him. Onyx wandered around, seeing all that were dead. There were a lot. They felt no sympathy for any of them. This was karma for hating someone that was trying to do the right thing.
"With your power, he may have been able to defeat me forever. But now I have a new host."
Onyx jumped at the sudden voice. They turned around. Cuervo had been... possessed by Don Armage? Then what exactly was Don Armage? Onyx decided it was better to not ask any more questions and just go with it.
"Perhaps he could have. Too bad I joined the enemy." Onyx replied.
"Let's go. The galaxy is ours."
...
A few days later, Onyx was back on Earth. They had seen a strange thing and wanted to investigate it. They found Orion exiting a ship. Then said ship was put under the water. What was he doing?
"What are you up to?" Onyx decided to just question him.
Orion turned to look at them. "I put Tsurugi into a cryo sleep pod. When the time is right, he will be found. And his wounds will heal."
"And how do you know when the time is right?"
"You know your kyutama, right? There are many of them. And one day, enough will be given to the next batch of saviors who will free us from this rule." Orion replied.
"Why are you telling me this?"
"I trust you still. You spared him. That means something, does it not?"
"I..." Onyx didn't finish.
"Can I ask a favor of you?" Orion approached them.
"I guess." Onyx shrugged.
Orion held out a kyutama. "Hold onto this until it is time. When the saviors collect the other three that I'll find places for, give them that one to unlock the ship. I won't tell anyone of that one. It will seem like only three are needed to unlock the ship so that no evil will get it."
Onyx took the kyutama and put it in their pocket. "You have my word."
"Can I ask one more thing of you?"
"Sure."
"Protect the next saviors. Keep an eye on them. They'll need help, I'm sure."
"I work for Jark Matter. I can't help them much."
"I know. But, you'll find a way. I believe in you."
Onyx rolled their eyes. They were being entrusted with such a task despite being on the enemy's side. Orion had a lot of faith in them. Though, Onyx had no plans to tell Don Armage about any of this. This was
