Inside Ms. Trussel's class, Ms. Trussel took out a big box of the textbooks.
Ms. Trussel: Okay. You all know what we're doing today? *Max raised his hand. * Yes, Max?
Max: We're getting our textbooks.
Ms. Trussel: Yes, Max. Today we will be doing textbook check out in my class, since I'm teaching math. Your textbooks will be like this. *She showed them what their textbook looks like. *
Taylor: Wow.
Nicole: It's looks so brand new.
Ms. Trussel: These will be your textbooks for the whole school year until the last week where you'll return them back to me so I can use them again next year. *She puts the next book down on her desk. * Now, before I start to book check out, I want to remind you all that you take better care of these textbooks, they are expensive, cost 100 euros if you lose them, you'll have to pay for it. Schools today can't afford new textbooks or replacement textbooks. So, please take better care of them, okay? *They all answered yes to Ms. Trussel. * Good. Now, let's get started. Stand in a formal line and the sooner we get this done, the sooner we can get started on our lesson. *They all stand up, stand in line, and go along with the book check out. In Monseuir Beaumont's French class, he went over the textbook the class will be using for the semester, Zoe sighed and rubbed her temples. *
Jessica: (facing Zoe, whispering) Hey, Zo. *She noticed she looked a little bit distracted. * You okay?
Zoe: (whispering) Hmm? Oh, yeah yeah, fine...
Jessica: (whispering) You sure? *Zoe sighed and put her hands in her eyes. *
Monseuir Beaumont: Do I hear talking back there? *No one said a word. * That's what I want to hear, tout le monde. That means "everyone" in French.
Zoe: (whispering to Jessica) I'll tell you later. *Jessica nod her head yes and looked up ahead at Monseuir Beaumont. *
Monseuir Beaumont: My class will be easy for you to take, it is important to learn a foreign language if you want the credits to graduate school.
Alyssa: (holding a pencil) Too easy for that part.
Monseuir Beaumont: (holding a French textbook) I would like to go over the textbook checkout for this class. So would you all like to come up, form a straight line, and we'll get started. *Everyone stands up from their seats as they all walk to Monseuir Beaumont's desk, and get started on the check-out. *
In the Bakery, things were slow in the morning Because people barely come to the bakery for breakfast, only around the afternoon and close to closing time. The phone rang and Mulan picked up the receiver.
Mulan: Tom and Sabine Boulangerie Patisserie, how can I help you? *She covered the receiver speaker. * Mushu, hand me a notepad. *Mushu gets a small notepad and a pen, he hands it to her. * Thank you. *She put the receiver on her shoulder and writes out the order. * Okay, so that's 1 dozen blueberry lemon macarons and one dozen croissants? Okay, sir. And what's your address? *She writes down the address under the order. * Okay, sir. Your order will be ready soon. *She hangs up the phone and heads to the kitchen where Shang and Tom are at. *
Tom: (getting the cookie sheet out) What is it, Mulan?
Mulan: (holding out the notepad) We got an order for 1 dozen blueberry lemon macarons and 1 dozen croissants.
Tom: (putting the cookie sheet down) Okay. You and Melanie can box up the order.
Mulan: Okay. *She leaves the back kitchen and tells Melanie what the order is and they start getting it together. *
Melanie: holding a box of blueberry lemon macarons) I got the macarons.
Mulan: (holding the box of croissants) Here are the croissants.
Melanie: (holding two boxes) You want me to do this delivery?
Mulan: Sure. Here's the address. *She showed her the address to the delivery. *
Melanie: I know that area. It's where I live.
Mulan: Okay, then.
Melanie: I'll be right back. *She walked out of the bakery, into her car, and drove to the address for the delivery. Then, a customer walked up to the customer. *
Mulan: Hello. Welcome to the Boulangerie Patisserie, how can I help you?
Male customer: I heard your chouquettes are really good.
Mulan: Yes,they are.
Male customer: I'll have a few chouquettes, please?
Mulan: (putting in the total) Okay, that'll be 6-euros. *The man reaches into his pocket for his wallet, pulls it out, gets his debit card, scans it, and puts it back in his wallet then in his pocket. Mushu helps Mulan put a few chouquettes in a bag, then Mulan closes it up, and places it on the counter. * Here you go, sir.
Male customer: (taking the bag off the counter) Thank you.
Tom: I'll have to make some changes in the bakery before the baby's born.
Shang: What kind of changes?
Tom: I'll have to get some hire help on some positions in the bakery. *Soon, the timer went ding. * The cinnamon rolls are done. *He put his oven mitts on, opened the oven, pulled out the plan of fresh cinnamon rolls, and placed them on the table. * We'll have to ice them when they're cool off.
Shang: Okay.
Tom: I'll have to discuss it with Sabine after the shift. *Soon, the door opened and Sabine came out. * Honey, what are you doing here? I thought you were suppose to be on bed rest.
Sabine: I can help out for a little bit. I don't feel nauseous like I was before.
Tom: Are you sure?
Sabine: I'll be fine. Don't push my buttons now, Tom.
Tom: Not trying to. But I'm just...
Sabine: I'll be fine, okay.
Tom: Okay. (Just hope you won't get too stressed out) *The sound of the bell rang when the door opened and a customer walked up to the counter. On the streets, Melanie stopped at the apartment building. *
Melanie: Hmm... "Rue des Fosses Saint Jacques", this is it. *She turned the car off, grab the boxes, get out of the car, and walked to the front door and walked up to the intercom speaker. She pressed on the button. *
Resident: (through the speaker) Hello?
Melanie: Hello, I'm from the Tom and Sabine Boulangerie Patisserie, I have your order: 1 dozen Blueberry lemon macarons and 1 dozen croissants.
Resident: (through the speaker) Okay. I live on floor 1 room number 101.
Melanie: Okay. *She walked through the halls and stopped at door 101, she rang the doorbell and the door opened. *
Male resident: Thank you.
Melanie: You're welcome, sir. *He hands Melanie the money. * 12-euros. Thank you, sir.
Male resident: You're welcome. *He closed the door and Melanie went back to the car and drove off to the bakery. *
At College Francoise DuPont, in Ms. Trussel's class, after the textbook check-out, Ms. Trussel gets started on the first math lesson.
Ms. Trussel: Now that you all have your textbooks, today we will be learning about how to use letters, which are called variables, and numbers with mathematical symbols to solve problems. I'll show you all a little slideshow of how you do it. *She pulls the projector screen down and goes to the computer, clicks on the PowerPoint icon on the computer, and switches it to the projection screen. * Can someone get the lights?
Oliver: I'll get it, Ms. Trussel.
Ms. Trussel: (Oliver goes to the light switch and turns the light off) Thank you, Oliver. *She showed them the first slideshow picture. * Now, a variable is any symbol that can be replaced with a number to solve a math problem. An open sentence has at least one variable. – An algebraic equation is an open sentence. – An open sentence can be proven neither true nor false until the variable is replaced with a number. Next slide is... *She showed them the second slideshow slide. * Letters are used to represent numbers, and these letters are referred to as variables. For example, in the equation 3 + x = 5, x is the letter that represents the numeral 2. However, in 3 + x =, the x is a variable that could represent many different numerals depending on the number placed in the blank. For example: 3 + x = 7 The variable x represents the numeral 4. 3 + x = 9 The variable x represents the numeral 6. 3 + x = 50 The variable x represents the numeral 47.
Drake: This doesn't look too hard.
Ms. Trussel: It is easy at first, but after lesson after lesson, it'll get a little hard, but it doesn't hurt to get a little help from this. You understand the adding variable, I want to show you all Variable and Multiplication. *She clicked on the next slide and showed them the next topic on the slideshow. * In multiplication problems, the symbols (X) or () are used to indicate multiplication. When variables are used, the signs for multiplication are left out. For example, "3" multiplied by the variable b will usually be written as 3b rather than 3 X b or 3b. In the expression 3b, the number "3" is the constant (also known as the coefficient) and the letter b is the variable. Then, the letter a is a variable that could stand for any number. Lets work out a multiplication problem involving a variable. 5a = 30. Think to yourself: "5 multiplied by what number is equal to 30? 5 multiplied by 6 equals 30. Therefore the variable equals 6. a = 6. I'll show you all an example of how it is. *She clicked on the next slide and revealed the problem and what is labeled in the equation. * The 4 in the equation is the Coefficient, the x behind the 4 is the variable. We all know that part, and lastly, the 7 and 5 are both labeled as constants. Remember how it all turns out.
Nicole: (clicking her mechanical pencil) Interesting. *She writes it in her notebook. *
Ms. Trussel: Then there's one on Variable and Division. *She clicked to the next slide on the screen. * When variables are used in division problems, you will see the problem "8 divided by m as" 8 m or 8 / m. Lets work out a Division problem involving a variable. 8 m = 4. Think to yourself: "8 divided by what number is equal to 4? 8 divided by 2 equals 4 - - since 4 times 2 equals 8. Therefore the variable m equals 2 m = 2. You all understand that too? *Some answered yes to Ms. Trussel. * Okay, some of you do, some of you don't. Which is why I have a little exercise planned out for you all. *She clicked out the slideshow off the computer, Oliver turned the light back on, and sat back down in his seat. Ms. Trussel drew the screen back up, held out a stack of papers, and she passed them out to everyone. *
Chloe: (rolling her eyes) Yuck. Math.
Ms. Trussel: I'll let you all get started on this assignment I have for you all, but you can work together or by yourself if you want to. *They all get started on the assignment Ms. Trussel sits back down in her seat. In the Bakery, the cash register went ding as Mulan put the money inside and closed it up, she also handed the customer a whole cherry pie. *
Mulan: Enjoy the pie, ma'am.
Female customer: (taking the cherry pie) Thank you. *She leaves the bakery and then, Melanie walks inside the bakery. *
Melanie: (handing Mulan 12-euros from the last delivery route) 12 euros.
Mulan: (putting the money in the register and closing it up) Thank you, Melanie. *Then, the next customer walked up to the counter. * Hello, ma'am and welcome to the Boulangerie Patisserie, how can I help you?
Female customer: I'll have one chocolate cheesecake. It's for a family dinner I'm having.
Mulan: (putting in the total) Okay. That'll be 8-euros. *The lady opened her purse, got out her wallet, handed Mulan her money, she put the money in the register, and closed it up. Melanie got the box, assembled it and went to the freezer and put the whole chocolate cheesecake inside the box, and closed it up. *
Melanie: (hands Mulan the box with the cheesecake inside) Here you go.
Mulan: (handing the cheesecake to the money) There you go, ma'am.
Female customer: (taking the chocolate cheesecake) Thank you. *She leaves the Bakery with her cheesecake. *
