Kakashi's frequent usage of anti-teamwork becomes apparent in Kakashi's decision to let Team 7 participate in the chunin exams after only a mere year of training. This was a stupid decision on Kakashi's part and another prime example of how irresponsible Kakashi is.
Kakashi should have never allowed Team 7 to enroll in the exams. It was clear they weren't anywhere near ready for the exams. If Kakashi cared at all about imparting teamwork to his pupils (and it's abundantly clear that he doesn't), he wouldn't have let his team join the exams when they were so obviously not ready for the challenge yet.
The primary problem with Team 7 participating in the chunin exams is, of course, Sakura.
Sakura wasn't even the weakest of her team, she was the weakest of her entire class, very possibly the weakest shinobi in the chunin exams. She offered almost nothing to her team outside of companionship and desperate but fruitless attempts to protect her team. Sakura was dead weight. She wasn't an asset, she was a liability, and it was massively unfair to Naruto and Sasuke to saddle them with someone who couldn't keep up. As is, she became a person to protect, and protecting a mostly defenseless person when you're trying to survive and keep yourself alive is an unwanted load. It's also not using teamwork.
Even Ino, also not a strong kunoichi, at least had a trademark technique with her mind transfer jutsu. Sakura had nothing; no trademark jutsu, she barely knew any jutsu at all, her taijutsu was average at best, she didn't exactly have good team battle skills, nor were her battle strategy skills all that great. If Sakura was useless in the Land of Waves arc, that means she needed a considerable amount of training before she was ready for the chunin exams. As is, she's a burden to the team and was dragging Naruto and Sasuke down. Not only does Sasuke have to take care of himself, he had to protect Sakura as well. If even one member of the team isn't ready for the chunin exams, then the team should wait a few extra years until that lagging member is ready for the exams. A team should care about all of its members successes, not just about one member.
Kakashi knows how the chunin exams works and knows that they end up with one-on-one battles, so if Sakura isn't yet able to stand a decent chance of winning against the likes of Neji, Sasuke, and Rock Lee, then Sakura should be prohibited from joining the exams. Unless one can make a convincing case that Sakura stands a good chance of defeating any of those boys in battle during her genin days – and no one can, because I'm well aware of Sakura's skill and power levels as a genin, and they are lacking – than Sakura should have never been in the exams. End of story.
Kakashi knows how dangerous the exams can be and are, and Sakura's survival and self-defense skills weren't up to par yet. And as her teacher, Kakashi should know that.
It's frankly bizarre that fans endlessly harp on how pathetic and weak Sakura is as a shinobi, yet at the same time fans also adamantly defend Kakashi's decision to let Sakura participate in the chunin exams, saying that she made it through so clearly she was ready for the exams. Sorry, but it can't be both ways. Sakura is either strong and a useful asset to her team and she's and ready for the chunin exams, or she's weak, useless, and has no business being in the chunin exams. But for fans to relentlessly mock her for being completely useless while at the same time praise Kakashi for sending Sakura to face high-level dangers is blatantly biased and contradictory.
Sakura had no business being in the exams, and if Sakura has no business being in the chunin exams, then Team 7 doesn't either until their whole team is fully ready.
And it's not just Sakura who had no business being in the chunin exams. Naruto wasn't ready for them yet either. Sakura and Naruto fumbling around like helpless kids while Sasuke had to act as the leader and keep his team alive and on track. For the guy who's endlessly harping about teamwork, this decision was completely counterproductive to what Kakashi is "trying" to teach.
Almost as soon as Team 7 entered the Forest of Death, they are immediately split up. Naruto and Sakura have to take direction from Sasuke as he works to keep the team together. Sasuke comes up with a secret code on the fly to ensure he knows his team's true identity, and Sasuke is the one who isn't fooled by imposters impersonating Naruto (whereas Sakura would have been easily fooled by such imposters and were she on her own, she would have been quickly dispatched or killed without Sasuke's protection).
Even as is, Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke would have all been annihilated had not Team Guy and Team 10 stepped in to assist them. Sakura wasn't strong enough to protect her comrades by herself, and because she was too weak, the whole team nearly died as a result.
Fans tend to justify it with the "all's well that ends well" philosophy, since fans say that Team 7 made it to the end so they must be qualified. I disagree. There's a big difference between dumb luck and skill, and the only reason Team 7 made it that far was because they were lucky that other teams helped them along the way. On a real battlefield, a team needs to be competent and capable on its own, because you can't count on reinforcements for every mission. Team 7 didn't finish because they were spectacularly competent; they made it out of the forest alive because some nice people willing to help happened to be in the area. But that was luck, and Team 7 can't count on luck to see them through every challenge, nor should it be taken for granted that they just happened to live through that incident on a fluke.
Sakura would have lost because she would have believed an enemy imposter was her teammate. Sakura would've been killed by Orochimaru had not Sasuke moved to save her in time (by injuring himself to do so), the entire team would've been wiped out had not Team Guy and Team 10 (and Sasuke's curse mark rage mode) come to the rescue. Naruto didn't even have a plan for getting another scroll, instead relying on his teammates to get him there. Overall, neither Naruto nor Sakura had the skill, experience, or maturity needed for such an exam when you had trained adults and dangers like bloodthirsty sand ninja running about.
Without other teams interfering and lending a help hand (which they didn't have to do), Team 7 would have been killed. This renders Kakashi's decision to allow Team 7 to compete in the chunin exams completely unacceptable. It's not like there's a rush to push the kids through the exams anyway. Maybe there is for Naruto (who does need to become chunin as soon as possible because of his desire to become Hokage), but Sasuke and Sakura have all the time in the world to achieve the chunin rank and there's no reason for them to hurry. It doesn't matter for them whether they achieve it now or a year later. Besides, I'm pretty sure that Kakashi didn't expect Naruto to become chunin at this point anyway, so I don't think that was ever his intent behind his decision to push Team 7 into the exams.
As is, Kakashi's decision to allow Team 7 to participate was unfair to Sasuke. It forced Sasuke to babysit his team. Sasuke loses Naruto in like 5 minutes after entering the Forest of Death, then is left alone with the burden of protecting the rather helpless Sakura. Sasuke has to survive while protecting Sakura and trying to find their lost teammate and having to go after the scrolls. It seems unfair for Kakashi to not allow his team to rely on teamwork (at this point, Naruto and Sakura are too far behind Sasuke to keep up with Sasuke), while putting the burden on Sasuke to be the adult of the group. Sasuke has to come up with the plan to keep his teammates safe and protected, Sasuke has to come up with solutions to get the scrolls and keep his teammates safe, Sasuke has to be the one to fight off the Sound Ninja and Orochimaru – all the weight of the responsibility comes down on him, while Naruto and Sakura are too immature, childish, and unskilled to help much to shoulder the emotional and physical toll of team survival that is weighing down Sasuke.
By letting Team 7 participate in the exams before Naruto and Sakura were ready, Kakashi unfairly put the burden of the team's safety solely on Sasuke's shoulders, because Naruto and Sakura weren't strong enough or capable enough to protect the team.
At least Kakashi asked Team 7 to choose to enter the exams on their own terms, telling them that they could enter the chunin exams individually (even though that wasn't true, since genin have to enter as a team of three) to participate in order to avoid pressuring them. Rather than announce the chunin exams as a team event and pressuring reluctant members of the trio who didn't want to participate but were hesitant to hold the team back, Kakashi told the trio that participating in the chunin exams was an individual decision, that one's decision wouldn't affect the other. That way one wouldn't feel driven by peer pressure to give into the pushy wants of the rest of the team if a team member didn't want to enter.
Although this method works better in theory then in reality, since Kakashi's attempt to avoid peer pressure didn't work. Naruto and Sasuke were eager for the challenge the chunin exams presented, whereas Sakura was glum and reluctant. It was obvious she didn't feel ready or prepared for such a difficult challenge, even internally musing that she doesn't want to join in the exams. She didn't have confidence in her abilities, since Sakura recognized she couldn't keep up with either Sasuke or Naruto and that she was lagging behind the team.
So peer pressure gets to Sakura anyway despite Kakashi's intentions. Sakura goes through with the exams due to peer pressure: she doesn't want to get left behind by her team and she doesn't want to be the odd one out. Sasuke and Naruto are so eager to enter the exams that Sakura feels pressured to do so as well, even though she doesn't want to and even though she doesn't feel qualified or ready.
So Kakashi's methods here were nice in theory, but it didn't work out. Unfortunately I think that's because Kakashi isn't attuned to the heartbeat of his team. Even Sasuke noted Sakura's gloomy mood the day of the chunin exams, though he didn't know the source causing it. Kakashi failed to take Sakura's feelings and capability into account, putting the team at risk and pushing his student to put herself through challenges she was not prepared nor equipped for and didn't even want to face.
Aside from that, what if Sakura had decided not to go through with the chunin exams? Kakashi would have had to explain to the eager Naruto and Sasuke that the reason why they couldn't participate in the chunin exams was all because of Sakura. Seems like a possible disaster to pit teammates against each other this way, so maybe dishonesty wasn't the best policy in this case. Considering that Sakura was the weakest of the bunch as well as the least confident, it would have been far better had Kakashi privately asked her about the exams first before ever bringing it up to Naruto and Sasuke (who are considerably more skilled, stronger, and more eager to fight and increase their skills than Sakura). Because if the team's weakest member is reluctant or unwilling, the team shouldn't go until the weakest member is also ready. Otherwise, the weak member is a hazard and it jeopardizes the whole team. And if Kakashi is concerned that Sakura is lagging behind because of lack of motivation, he could always confront her on that and call her out as well, and make sure to give her special training thereafter to make sure she can keep up with the team so that she doesn't hold Naruto and Sasuke back forever.
Ultimately the best situation to avoid creating disharmony and resentment would be for Kakashi to not even give his three students the option to enter the chunin exams until later. Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura were all surprised by the news that Kakashi had recommended all three of them for the exams, so clearly none of them had been expecting to have the opportunity to take the exams this soon anyway. Kakashi could bring attention to the chunin exams and tell Team 7 that he wants to have them all in fighting shape for the next one in order to motivate them, but at this point neither Sakura nor Naruto are ready for the trial of the exams.
Some might point out that Asuma and Kurenai let their teams into the chunin exams as well, but Team 10 had no business being in the chunin exams either, for the same reasons as Team 7. Team 10 was weak and clueless and lacked the team cohesion and maturity necessary for the exams.
And Team 8...Team 8 is a bit more nuanced. Their teamwork seemed the strongest at the time of the exams. They also seemed comparatively stronger than their peers. Shino, Kiba, and even Hinata were impressive fighters during their genin days. It's only in their chunin/adult days they are significantly weaker than their peers, with the exception of Shino, who was consistently strong throughout the entire series. Team 8 were a competent bunch during their genin days, so I'm more okay with their entrance, since all three members of their team seemed qualified, worked cohesively as a team, and were all an equally valuable asset to the team. The fact that they were the second team to make it to the tower speaks to their impressive ability as a team.
So in Team 8's case, all three members were competent and capable, and all three helped each other make it to the finish, and all members of the team were useful and contributed to the team's success.
