Logan wasn't the type of person who was late a lot, but having a young kid meant that getting out the door in the morning took a lot longer than was necessary.

"Oliver, we're gonna be late" Logan said

"I need to tie my shoes" Oliver said. He'd recently learned to tie his own shoes, which meant that he needed to do it on his own every single time. Even if it took a ridiculous about of time

"Can I do it?" Logan asked. He was all for his son learning to be independent, but being late stressed him out.

Eventually they got out the door and actually made it to school on time. After dropping Oliver off, Logan somehow remembered that he promised to try to get the phone number for his friend's parent, so he stopped at the office before leaving.

When he got to the office, he was surprised to see Mitchum there waiting for him.

"What are you doing here?" Logan asked

"I just came to check up on things" Mitchum said. "Where's my grandson, today?"

"It's 9am on a Wednesday" Logan said "he's at school"

"Oh right...school" Mitchum said, disappointedly. As much as Logan hadn't had the best relationship with his father in the past, he was happy that Mitchum and Oliver had a good relationship. "Why don't you two have dinner with us tonight?"

"Because it's a 2 hour drive and we get back too late" Logan said. He enjoyed bringing Oliver to have dinner with his parents, but they never got home before 11 when they did. It was a little too late for Oliver when he had to get up at 7 for school the next morning.

"Friday then" Mitchum said

"Fine. Friday"

——

"Gilmore!" Someone called out to Rory as she walked through the New York Times newsroom.

"What's up, Kate?" Rory asked

"Are you busy?" Kate asked

"I have to go pick up my kids. What do you need?" Rory asked

"It can wait" Kate said.

"Are you sure?" Rory asked

"Yeah, it's fine"

"Ok. I'll see you tomorrow"

"Bye"

Rory left work and went to get Amelia from preschool. Rory got out of the car and went inside to get Amelia.

"Hi Mel belle!" Rory said as she picked Amelia up to hug her. "Did you have a good day?"

Amelia nodded.

"Good" Rory kissed Amelia's cheek and put her down. "Let's go get Ollie"

"Mama, I wanna go to grandma's house" Amelia said

"Not today, baby" Rory said "we're gonna see grandma on Friday"

"And then daddy" Amelia said

"That's right, you're gonna see daddy this weekend"

Later that evening, Ollie and Amelia were watching a movie and Rory was making dinner when her phone rang. She answered and put it on speaker. "Rory Gilmore"

Nobody said anything.

"Hello?"

"Mommy, it's frozen!" Ollie shouted from the living room.

"I'll be there in a minute" Rory said and then turned her attention back to the phone call. "Is someone there?"

Nobody answered so she hung up and went to help Ollie and Amelia fix their movie.

——

Logan was in his apartment with Oliver and Finn.  Oliver was in his room, and Finn was watching Logan look for the piece of paper he got with Oliver's friend's phone number on it.

"How did you lose a piece of paper you only got this morning?" Finn asked

"Why are you here?" Logan asked

"Tara took Lily to visit her parents in Seattle. I didn't wanna be alone in my apartment" Finn said. "Whats on the paper that so important anyway?"

"Oliver made a friend at school and he keeps asking if he can come play here" Logan said "I got the phone number from the office and I don't remember where I put it"

"It's not someone you know?" Finn asked

"I don't know anyone here, I moved here a month ago" Logan said. "Although, I know the kid's name is also Oliver, which my Oliver thinks is really funny"

"And confusing"

"I'm gonna go look in my car, keep an eye on him?"

Finn nodded and Logan left the apartment. He found the piece of paper, folded in half, in the cup holder of his car.

He went back upstairs and was more than a little surprised to see the name on the paper.

"You look like you saw a ghost" Finn said

Logan chuckled uncomfortable "I kind of did" he said and passed the paper to Finn

"Ghost of relationships past" Finn said with a laugh. "Haven't heard that name in a while. What are the odds of that?"

"Apparently high" Logan said. There were very few things that he wanted less than to call his old college girlfriend. He was going to because if was  for his son, but he really didn't want to. Logan pulled his phone out of his pocket and dialed Rory's number.

"Put it on speaker" Finn said but Logan just waved him off.

"Rory Gilmore" he heard Rory say on the other end

Logan found himself frozen. He hadn't seen or heard from Rory in 11 years. He didn't even know what to say to her.

"Hello?" Rory asked

Logan stayed quiet. He heard someone say something in the background and then Rory again.

"I'll be there in a minute" Rory said. "Is anyone there?"

Logan couldn't make words come out of his mouth and the call was hung up.

"That was pathetic" Finn said

"Shut up"

"I mean all you had to do was say hi"

"I haven't heard her voice in years, I got a little flustered"

"Huh" Finn chuckled

"What?"

"Nothing"

"Finn"

"It's just that you definitely still love her" Finn said. He'd known Logan since they were 5. 30 years. He could read Logan like a book.

"That's ridiculous" Logan said. "That was over a decade ago"

"Ok" Finn said. He had a feeling that Logan was lying to himself but it didn't really matter anyway.

The next morning, after dropping Oliver off at kindergarten, Logan ran into Rory in the parking lot.

They both just stood there staring at each other for a moment. Logan knew that Rory had a kid in the school because he got her number from the office, but Rory wasn't even aware that Logan was in New York.

"Um...hi" Logan said

"Hi" Rory said.

"This is a little weird, right?" Logan asked

"I- uh- well... yeah, it's weird" Rory said "but it shouldn't be"

"Right" Logan nodded. A moment went by and neither of them said anything. "So uh...how are you?"

"Good" Rory said "What about you? I didn't know you lived in New York?"

"Yeah, we just moved"

"Oh" Rory said.

Amelia was pulling on Rory's arm, trying to get her to start walking towards the car. She knew they were headed to see Lorelai, so she didn't care who that man her mom was talking to was, she just wanted to get out of here. "Mama"

"What?" Rory asked and Amelia pointed at the car. "Sorry, my kid has no patience"

Logan chuckled. "It's not just yours"

"Yeah. Well it was good to see you" Rory said

"You too"

Rory put Amelia in the car and drive to a coffee shop when she was meeting Lorelai. They were sitting in the coffee shop, drinking coffee (or milk in Amelia's case) and Lorelai could tell that Rory was a little preoccupied.

"It's happy birthday" Amelia said

"Whose birthday?" Lorelai asked

"My birthday. I'm 3" Amelia said

"Your birthday's not until Christmas time" Rory said "and you're 2"

"I'm 3" Amelia said

"You'll be 3 in Dec- you know what? If you wanna be 3, go for it" Rory said. There really wasn't any point in trying to convince Amelia of anything, and it really wasn't worth upsetting her.

"So when do you tell me what's distracting you?" Lorelai asked

"I ran into Logan this morning" Rory said

"Logan Huntzberger?"

"Yup" Rory said and took a sip of her coffee. "He apparently moved back to the east coast and has a kid in Ollie's school"

"That's weird"

"It was a very awkward interaction"

"When was the last time you spoke to him?" Lorelai asked

"My college graduation"

"Yeah, well then I think some awkwardness makes sense"

"I guess. It's not like it really matters though"

"I guess not" Lorelai said. Should could tell that Rory wasn't saying something, but she didn't want to pry so she changed the subject. "Adam's here this weekend, right?"

"Yeah, he's gonna take the kids upstate to see his parents" Rory said. Most of the weekends that Adam was in New York, he took the kids to spend the weekend in Rochester with his parents.

"You wanna come to Stars Hollow?" Lorelai asked. She knew Rory didn't like being without the kids. It wasn't that Rory didn't want them seeing their dad, she did. But she missed them.

"I have work to do"

"Please don't spend the weekend holed up in your apartment"

"I won't. I do have a life. I have friends"

"I know you have friends, but I also know you, and I know that unless someone forces you out when you don't have your kids, you sit in your apartment reading all weekend" Lorelai said. "Come to Stars Hollow, it'll be fun. We can drink a lot of coffee, and watch a lot of movies, and April's gonna be there too"

"Fine"

The next day was Friday, and it was Adam's weekend so he was picking the kids up from school. Rory packed their stuff in a little backpack and she always left it in the office at Ollie's school for Adam to grab after he got Ollie. Once she got the kids to school, she headed to Stars Hollow. She knew it was better than being alone in her apartment. It was also Friday night, which meant they were having dinner with Richard and Emily.

"No kids this week?" Emily asked

"No, they're with Adam" Rory said. "He took them to Rochester to see his parents"

"Rochester's fun" Richard said

"Is it?" Lorelai asked jokingly

Emily rolled her eyes. "Rory, how's work?"

"Work is good"

——

"Watch your fingers" Logan said. He was letting Oliver help him make soup, and he decided to let him try chopping vegetables. He only gave him a dinner knife, but he was still a little nervous about Oliver's little fingers.

"I know" Oliver said as Logan put some celery down on the cutting board. "Eww"

"You like celery"

"Not when you cook it" Oliver said. "Only when it's crunchy"

"We need to put it in because it gives it flavor, but if you don't wanna eat it you don't have to"

"But can we leave it big so it doesn't get in the bowl by accident?" Oliver asked

"So everything else will be in little bite sized pieces and just the celery will be big?" Logan asked

Oliver nodded.

"That makes sense to you?"

"Yes" Oliver said

"Ok" Logan chuckled. "You can do it however you want"

"Why are we making soup and not something else?"

"Because you asked me this morning if we could have soup"

"Oh yeah" Oliver laughed. "I forgot"

"You're crazy" Logan smiled and kissed the top of Oliver's head

"I like crazy"

"Me too"

——

On Sunday evening Adam brought Ollie and Amelia back to Rory's apartment.

"Did you guys have fun?" Rory asked

"We made cookies" Amelia said

"That's fun" Rory said and ran her hand through Ollie's very messy hair. Ollie's hair was about halfway between his ears and his shoulders. Rory thought it was too long, but he didn't want to get it cut. "What's going on with your hair, bud?"

"I didn't let daddy brush it" Ollie said

"Why?"

"Because I only want you to brush it"

Rory put her hands on either side of Ollie's face. "Listen to me. You have to let daddy brush your hair when your with him. Otherwise it gets tangled like this"

"Why?" Ollie asked

"Because when your hair is long it needs to be brushed" Rory said. "If you don't want to brush it every day we can get it cut, but if you want to keep it long we have to brush it"

"Ok"

"Ok"
