("les yeux sans visage" ahh shmilk)
When Black Sapphire Cookie had excitedly announced the return of the great Master of Deceit, C/N Cookie practically jumped (different from Candy Apple Cookie, who had actually been bouncing with enthusiasm).
Of course, the spire was still intact even without its splendor. It was just... less lively. More boring, to be honest.
Later though, C/N Cookie was in their room, fingers brushing over the cover of an old magic book that Shadow Milk Cookie had once gifted them. Then it happened: a rumble. Two. Calm. The markings on the walls seemed to glisten more, the faint presence of magic more palpable than ever.
They didn't have the time to process it all before a serpent-like shadow curled around them, evaporating into dust and then turning into the Beast of Deceit himself, floating with his arms crossed.
After so long, being sealed in the Silver Tree, his presence should've been overwhelming. His mismatched eyes, piercing like a needle, glistening with glee or intensity.
But it wasn't like that at all.
"Do you have any idea how infuriating you are?" His tone was mocking, almost childish, and yet C/N Cookie knew he meant it.
"Long time no see to you too, sir." They tilted their head in amusement. "I think I do."
"Do you? Do you? Vanishing whenever you please, flitting about like some reckless wisp!" He waved his hand dramatically. "I knew you were sneaky, but this?"
C/N Cookie tilted their head, feigning innocence. "I don't know what you mean."
"Oh really?" scoffed Shadow Milk Cookie. "A Parfaedian at the Triple Cone Cup. A 'fair maiden' at that blasted pink thief's Princess Contest, a tourist watching those Cookie Games-" He pointed an accusing finger at them. "You really thought you could trick me! Hiding with these stupid Cookies!"
They stifled a smile. So he had recognized them, even with their careful shapeshifting. "I was just exploring, that's all."
"Exploring? Blasphemy!"
"You didn't have to keep an eye on me, sir. Is it that bad I like to go around?"
He hissed. "You literally shapeshifted just so I wouldn't recognize you, didn't you?!"
"That's the point." They nodded. "You wouldn't have left me alone."
"That's not the point!" He made a gesture of fainting, letting himself fall back, then looked at them through one eye. "I was-" He faltered, his dramatic frustration melting.
"...I was worried."
C/N Cookie studied him, their expression unreadable. That's another thing he liked about them. Calmer and more unshaken than Candy Apple Cookie and Black Sapphire Cookie could ever be, yet with a quiet intensity that made them hard to ignore. Trembling fingers don't do good when weaving lies.
"I missed you." He admitted slowly, getting up from his spot on the ground. "Do you know what it's like, being unable to do anything but watch? I was sealed in that darn tree for oh so so soso long! And you just - disappeared all the time!"
C/N Cookie crossed their arms. It was rare to see him like this. "You were - are - too protective of me."
"No I'm NOT!"
Ah, there he was again.
Shadow Milk Cookie glared at them, then looked away. "...I know you can take care of yourself, little star." He huffed after a while. Saying that almost sounded painful coming from him. "But that doesn't mean I have to like it!"
The Spire of Deceit stilled, the shadows feeling less oppressive with their master acting so unusually.
Finally, C/N Cookie sighed. "I missed you too, you know."
The male looked at them, searched their face. Then, he let out a single chuckle.
"Good." He swooped down to catch them in a hug. "You careless, careless little liar. Oh well, at least I taught you good!"
They smiled. "Now stop trying to spy on me."
"No promises."
