This line of Yoda's is so quietly spoken that flies over a bunch of adults' heads including my parents' when we saw it in theaters even they did not hear it, but I certainly did. So if you're not glued to screen you won't even realize how much good advice Yoda is actually giving Luke in the film of The Last Jedi in the Sequel trilogy of Star Wars.
Luke never said Ben couldn't be saved even Rey knows that. She realizes that he can't change Ben's mind because Ben's mind has become a problem for which he no longer has a solution that will work to stop him. Rey learns that by listening to Luke and his story which is why her answer of encouragement is different compared to Leia's original mission for her coming there. When she says, "Use your legend, Luke." She doesn't reference his redeeming people. "You may not be able to save him anymore, but you can indeed help me save the others from him." This is what she meant by that. The first thing that got him humbled in Empire Strikes Back and the same thing he did succeed at back at Jabba the Hutt's palace when he did have to rescue his friends and he did succeed then and there right in Return of the Jedi. And because she listened so well, he actually listens to her advice and does exactly the second best thing he's good at that he could've ever done he goes to protect his other friends and help her save everybody else. In this way he pays Rey's listening skills forward. Saving Ben was a selfish thing to do now in the current time frame of Luke's mature story. Saving his other friends like Leia and her crew was more selfless. Again another moment where Duty means doing exactly what your heart regrets. Rey does exemplified that she pushes away the Selfish desire she has to save Ben in the end of The Last Jedi temporarily to help serve a duty that would heal his scarred and wounded heart saving his other friends. And once everybody else is saved Rey's mind becomes solely focused on saving Ben himself as that is her next assignment as a jedi to herself now that Luke wasn't around anymore. Rey is not a Mary Sue because she is selfless and knows what Sacrifice actually means. Putting duty temporarily over the wants of your heart is a selfless sacrifice that real world people do make and they don't make the decision very lightly because they know if they are faint of heart there's no redeeming themselves and there is no pointing of coming back if they don't see duty through first over the selfish passion desires of their heart. It doesn't mean that some of those selfish desires don't matter some of them do actually truly matter to them and others, but how those desires and when they're achieved is an entirely different matter.
