I got to be real particular and make sure nobody finds out though, 'cause if my mas'er finds out I would fall under the whip. (25 words in the previous sentence) Time and time again I done heard Mas' Henley swear that if he catches his slaves with learni' he'll beat the skin off us, then sell our hides to slavers from the Deep South.(34 words in previous sentence) (Yep Virginia is not an actual geographically Southern State of the United States despite it being classified as a southern state in the Civil War era and before because of its rules involving slaves.) He got the law on his side, too. (8 words in the previous sentence) Anybody found teachin' a slave in the state of Virginia can be sent to jail. (15 words in the previous sentence) (Think you still have terrible laws trust they compare to nothing like the stupid rules that encurred the traumatic results of the Slave Stories and the Holocaust events. My Chardon Middle & Highschools hammered home on how stupid the laws were during the Civil War era and the Holocaust era of the world and I hated every moment sitting through those classes writing lengthy reports on the stupidity of white men and how inferior they made others feel in that time: which was totally super ridiculous. Ever since I was involved in that in school the violence we learnt to study about is still etched right into my brain. And unlike other writers when I read something I visually see it happen in my mind repeatedly over and over again. But the Deep South slavers were the worst U. S Slavers that ever existed in that time period of the U. S they had lost their entire moral compass and their ideals and ideas should have withered away with them like grass does during the autumn months.) Sure! (1 word sentence) Wonder why the white folks is so determined to keep us from knowin' things? (14 words in the previous sentence) (This is both a statement and a rhetorical question from the book's character. The more important question comes up next sentence.) What are they scared of? (5 words in the previous sentence)
Cain't help but laugh a little bit when I think of what Mas' Henley would think if he knew I could read better than his boy — and that it was his wife that had teached me! (36 words in previous sentence) (Honestly I'd probably laugh silently too.)
It's near dark. (3 words in the previous sentence) Pray Lord, don't let nobody find my diary hid behind the loose brick in the outside chimney wall, back of kitchen. (21 words in the previous sentence) Hope it can stay dry and safe until I can sneak away to write again.(15 words in the previous sentence) (My other thing is that the main female character does actually believe in God. This is a major thing I simp for African American people in my culture because while being forced to have a praise and worship setting, as slaves on the very plantations they worked on, the knowledge they did hear from the bible became their spiritual endurance a gift from God. So if you know of any African American family member in your family lineage that was a slave in their long gone past, be very aware that may actually know God better than you because they have had personal trust experiences with Him. Learning to read and write is Clotee's coping mechanism with being in the life of slavery since she cannot really communicate with the other girls of her racial community at the time since they have much harder labor than she did as we know of currently. So when she says "Pray Lord." she not praying just about the object "diary" she is praying for protection of the coping mechanism that keeps her sane during this insane time she is depicted to be living in.

I know I'm a white person and you other white people think I'm crazy standing up for other races but I say I will celebrate them as much as I celebrate my sister in-laws whom I mention on a daily basis if you haven't noticed by now. I mention them more because I get to know them better in a few weeks than I have ever known my actual sibling within a decade! I have so much more fun talking and spending time with my sister in-laws than my four older siblings combined. That's because they defend me they make sure others understand me and respect me. They're very active in their roles and they are amazingly comfortable people to be around.. Other than that my best family member is my Mom and we are super duper connected compared to everyone else.
