I.2
Don't you think the world is unfair?
"Kochou!"
Kochou Kanae turned around when someone called her name. A smile crept up to her face as she saw her fellow Pillars.
"Good afternoon, Himejima-san, Uzui-san, and Shinazugawa." Kanae greeted them.
The three young men were on their way to lunch together. It has been two weeks since Sanemi became a Pillar. Uzui and Himejima literally took him in to keep him in check, in case he went on a rampage.
"Are you heading toward the estate?" Uzui asked.
"Yes. I just returned from Yuna's house." Kanae answered.
Sanemi narrowed his eyes at the mention of the girl's name.
"How did it go?" Uzui asked.
"Oh, I didn't meet her. She's out working since morning. I only came to check on her aunt's condition." Kanae explained.
"Poor child... She has to work to keep her family alive." Himejima murmured as he shed a tear.
"Yes. Unfortunately, her aunt's condition isn't good. My medicine doesn't work on her anymore." Kanae sighed, looking vexed by the fact that she cannot help the girl.
"Anyway, I have to report back to Oyakata-sama. I'll be taking my leave now." Kanae smiled at the guys.
"Yeah, see you later." Uzui waved at her as she walked away.
"Come on, let's go. It's our turn now." Uzui said.
"What turn?" Sanemi asked, suspiciously eyeing the taller man. "By the way, is that girl's aunt sick?"
"Yes. We don't know what illness she's suffering from. Kanae has done what she could for almost five months. Looking that she couldn't even stand up by herself now, her condition is surely getting worse." Himejima said.
"Could it be because of her age?" Sanemi asked.
"But when I saw her, she still looks young." Uzui said, tilting his head as he recalled the day when he saw Yuna's aunt.
"So she works for her aunt? What about her mother? Her uncle?" Sanemi asked.
"They're no longer around. She lives with her aunt and her one year older cousin." Himejima said and Sanemi hummed, his thoughts about her changed a bit.
"You sure do know a lot about her." Sanemi said.
"Of course. This is what we call gathering informations flamboyantly." Uzui rolled his eyes as he walked into a small diner.
The three sat down together and ordered their food. They made small talk with each other as they waited.
"Here's your... orders."
Sanemi turned his head around and his eyes popped out.
"Well, good afternoon! Fancy meeting you here!" Uzui greeted the young girl in front of him.
Kisaragi Yuna didn't even glance at him. She placed down the trays of food she was holding. She ignored all of Uzui's words and left them.
"Damn it." Uzui mumbled.
"Are you guys crazy? How come you know about her workplace?" Sanemi asked in disbelief.
"We know everything about her. She works here every Monday to Friday from morning to evening. On Saturday, she helped the shops around the area. On Sunday, she works as a-"
"Stop that! You're literally stalking her!" Sanemi yelled.
"It is quite disturbing, but we can't help it. We have to do this for Oyakata-sama." Himejima said.
Sanemi shook his head at them. He ate his food, ignoring the two men across him. He glanced up at Yuna, who was talking with a man. The man gave her some money and she bowed at him.
"Where are you going?" Uzui asked when she walked past them.
"Now, why don't you sit down and have a small chat with us?" Himejima asked.
Yuna looked at them with a frown. With a long sigh, she sat down beside the table.
"What do you want to talk about? My answer will not change and I'm quite busy today." Yuna said.
"She's surprisingly cooperative today." Sanemi pointed out.
"As long as you don't come to my house." Yuna added.
"How's your aunt's condition?" Himejima asked.
"Bad." Yuna answered bluntly.
"I'm sorry we can't do anything for her."
"Why would you?" Yuna asked. "It's not like you know her or anything."
Sanemi stared at her in annoyance as Uzui spoke, "Well, is it wrong to help someone in need? Our friend, Kochou, has done a lot of things to help her, right?"
Yuna pursed her lips tightly, looking away. Sanemi noticed how her expression changed as if she's troubled by something.
"I have to go. Good bye." Yuna said as she stood up and walked away.
"Don't forget to join the corps!" Sanemi exclaimed.
"Looks like Shinazugawa's finally doing his job." Uzui commented.
"Well, it is Oyakata-sama's request." Sanemi said.
The three stayed to chat for a moment before leaving the place. Sanemi parted ways with Uzui and Himejima. He walked through the village, heading to his house. He saw people crowding in the middle of the street and decided to take a look.
"I don't have anything to sell to you!"
Sanemi peeked over a person's shoulders.
"But- You said yesterday that I can pay it later..." A familiar voice spoke.
Sanemi slipped in through the crowds and saw Yuna arguing with an older man.
"Well yeah, but business has been going down lately. How can I guarantee that you're going to pay later? You haven't even paid your debts yet." The man said.
Yuna stared at him with clenched fists, anger building up inside her chest.
"Weren't you the one who said that I can take the meds as long as I work for you?" Yuna asked.
"That was back then. Who would've known that my business will go rock bottom? And I don't need your help anymore so you can stop coming here now."
Yuna's eyes were full of disbelief.
"The girl's at it again." Sanemi heard one of the people said.
"I can't believe she's working her ass off at such a young age. She must've had a hard life."
"Isn't she working too hard though? Even watching her makes me tired sometimes."
"I know."
Sanemi frowned at them. They knew the girl was in trouble, but why didn't they help her?
The man turned around and walked into his shop.
"Please wait!" Yuna ran up to him and grabbed his arm.
"Fuck off!" The man swung his arm toward Yuna, sending her petite body away.
Yuna was thrown away, falling a few meters away from the man. She groaned when her head collided with the grounds. Pushing herself against the grounds to stand up, a drop of red liquid fell down from her forehead.
She clenched her fists as vein popped out on her head. Her teeth were clattering in rage. She stood up and turned toward the man.
Her eyes widened when she saw a white haired man standing in front of her, as if he was shielding her from the older man.
"What's your business, boy?" The man asked.
"How can you hit a little girl?" Sanemi asked, glaring at the man.
"What does it have to do with you? Don't butt into other people's businesses. I won't hesitate to hit you." The man spat and Sanemi scoffed.
"Let's see if you can actually land a blow on me."
"Why you-"
The man went to punch Sanemi's face but Sanemi effortlessly grabbed his hand. Sanemi single handedly flipped the man over and he fell to the grounds.
Everyone who was watching gasped at the scene.
"Damn it!" The man cursed with a flushed face, full of embarrassment.
"How much is it?" Sanemi asked. The man didn't understand what he meant.
"How much is the medicine?"
The man grumbled as he stood up. He walked into the shop and came out with a bottle of pills.
"Do you have the money for it?"
"Do I look like I don't?" Sanemi rolled his eyes at the man. The man shoved the bottle to Sanemi harshly, earning a glare from him.
"On second thought..." Sanemi mumbled as he rummaged into his pockets after taking the bottle.
"I'll pay for her debts too." He said as he took some money and threw them toward the man.
The man's jaws dropped as he gathered the falling money on the grounds, telling everyone to screw off and not to take his money.
Sanemi turned around to look at Yuna, whose blood trickled down from her forehead to her cheek and chin. Seeing how she was glaring at him, Sanemi's concern for the girl vanished in a second and he clicked his tongue in annoyance.
"What's with that look? You want me to poke your eyes or what?" Sanemi said harshly. "After all that troubles I went through to help you..."
Sanemi held the medicine out to Yuna, but she didn't take it.
"What do you want from me? Do you want me to join the corps?" Yuna asked.
"Isn't that what I've been doing for this past week?" Sanemi asked back.
"Is that why you did that?"
"What? Giving this to you?" Sanemi raised the bottle. "Do you have any reason to help people in need?"
Yuna's glare vanished. She stared at him in shock.
"I just happened to see you in trouble, that's why I decided to help. Seeing that no people have any conscience at all..." He muttered the last words.
"... Then what do you want from me in return?" Yuna asked.
"Nothing really."
"Stop being a hypocrite. People always ask something in return everytime they help me." Yuna said.
Just by those words, Sanemi could imagine what she has been through.
"Then joining the corps might be a good idea, so I can finally do something good for Oyakata-sama." Sanemi said.
Yuna snatched the medicine from Sanemi.
"Anything but that." She said.
She turned around and walked away, leaving Sanemi.
"Huh. What a fucking rude girl." Sanemi mumbled as he stared at Yuna's small back. Then she suddenly stopped and turned around, surprising Sanemi.
"Thank you."
With that, she walked away.
Sanemi kept staring at her as she disappeared. He ruffled his snow colored hair, sighing. He walked back to his house, mind wondering about Yuna.
Yuna, who has arrived at her house, entered the main room. She sat down beside her aunt, who was coughing violently.
"Oh, Yuna... You're back..." The older woman managed the utter between her coughs. "What happened... to your head...?
"I fell down earlier. It's not a big deal." Yuna said as she gave her a pill and a cup of water.
"You bought a new one... Where did you get the money from? That man sells medicine in ridiculously high price." Her cousin, Hiroto, asked with suspicion.
Yuna frowned at his question.
"You didn't steal it again, didn't you?" Hiroto asked.
"I would have if it wasn't for him..." Yuna whispered.
"Who?" Yuna was cursing his cousin and his good hearing inside her mind.
"Nobody." She answered.
"... A kind nobody..."
