It was the usually sunny afternoon on Cairnholm. There were few clouds and the sun was beating down onto the small island, warming up the air and drawing everyone to the beach. As most of the children made their way down to the sand and water, Hugh and I stayed behind, making lunch for our little picnic.
It was rare the bird allowed anyone to skip meals, it was the best (and only) time she could get everyone in the same room to announce news or to catch up. But lunch was her most flexible, usually everyone was busy during the day, at the beach or running around outside, meaning it was more difficult to get everyone to lunch at the same time. So lunch was usually dismissed as a fend for yourself type of deal, meaning the majority of our dates were lunch dates.
Packing up the last of our food, I closed the basket just as Hugh appeared beside me with a blanket.
"Ready to go honey?" He asked, assuming I was as he grabbed my hand. I nodded and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek before taking the basket and leaving the house, leading him to our picnic spot.
It was always the same spot. Further away from the house, opposite side of the island of the beach, and out of sight from anyone who might be looking out from the house. It was a rather small clearing between several trees and it over looked the water. It was quite a nice spot and the other children had no business over here, you couldn't swim on this side of the island so they weren't intrigued.
I helped Hugh lay down the blanket and we sat after, taking out the food we had packed and distributing it accordingly.
"This is such a beautiful spot." I commented, taking a bite of my sandwich. Hugh nodded and took a bite from his own, several bees flying off to go find flowers.
"A beautiful picnic spot, yes, but I like looking at the even more beautiful girl sitting across from me."
"Oh hush, you're such a flirt." I said, a light pink blush flushing across my face. He smiled as it did and continued eating.
For the most part, we just ate quietly, enjoying one another's presence. We didn't have much to catch up on. We lived in a time loop and for the most part, spent all day together so it's not like anything was new. Bees flew around, flying in and out of Hugh's mouth as he ate, a few buzzing near my own head. It's funny, I use to be afraid of bees and now I kiss a man who has them living inside of him.
Once finished with our food, I pushed the basket aside and laid back on the blanket only to be joined shortly after by Hugh. I reached down and held onto his hand, watching the clouds in the sky while tapping my fingers against his hand. The same few clouds blew over head as they did everyday. They didn't have much of a specific shape really, they never did. But Hugh liked to pretend they did and would always come up with an absurd shape.
"That one right there is very clearly a dolphin... a very short dolphin, but a dolphin." He told me as he pointed up to a cloud that was much more circular and stout than any dolphin I've ever seen. I gave a small laugh.
"A dolphin? Hugh darling, have you ever seen a dolphin? I'm beginning to think you haven't as this is the third dolphin shaped cloud and the two before this one looked nothing like this cloud." I told him, earning a laugh and a glance over to me.
"Are you judging my dolphin clouds?" He asked, cocking an eyebrow at me.
"Perhaps, I mean, I don't see how you can call every cloud a dolphin. I'm really starting to think you've never actually seen a dolphin."
"I will have you know that I HAVE seen a dolphin, thank you very much."
"Well you sure aren't reflecting that knowledge on your cloud-gazing abilities." I joked, laying on my side to look at him. "Because none of your dolphins were dolphins."
"My imagination must be more advanced than yours." He said, also laying on his side to face me "because I was showing you dolphins."
"Mhm... yes, yes, you keep telling yourself that."
"I will." He said, leaning forward and pressing his forehead to mine.
"Do you think kissing me will make me think that you are right? Because you're not." I said, he frowned a bit "I never said you can't kiss me though, you can still do that. In fact, I'd like it if you did that."
The frown on his face melted away and he moved a bit for a kiss. Happily, I returned the kiss and a few moments later he pulled away and smiled. I felt butterflies swarm my stomach, they did whenever he kissed me.
Laying on his back again, Hugh pointed up to a very thin and wispy cloud. With a laugh, he said "hey look another dolphin." Assuming it was a joke I looked up but to my surprise, it did have a vague dolphin shape. Suppose that kiss did make him right.

AN: hey! Look! An update? Yes. I have updated this story. And it's a Hugh x reader! I rarely ever see a Hugh one, I think it's because everyone pushes Hugh and Fiona so no one really thinks that other people have fictional crushes on him. Regardless, it's here! I hope you enjoyed the story. Also, are you excited for The Desolations of Devil's Acre? I definitely am but I am also really sad that the series is ending:( I wish it could go on forever but at the same time, I also can't wait to read whatever else Ransom Riggs conjures up! Stay peculiar!
Very Peculiarly Yours,
Mrs. Nullings
