West Side Story AU

"Y/N! Come on! We're going to the club!" Your group of friends leaned on the counter and watched you as you gave Jimmy, the cook, the next order.
You sighed, "Guys! Seriously! I'm working here!"
"Y/N, seriously!" Your best friend, Y/BFF/N, whined, "You're always working in this lame diner!"
"Hey!" Jimmy exclaimed, "You know, as the owner, I can kick you out, right?"
"Sorry, Jimmy!" your friends hollered.
"Sorry, guys! We're understaffed and it'd be rude to just leave Lance and Cameron here to take over."
"Uuugggghhh! Why do you have to be such a nice person?!" Your other friend, Y/F/N, asked.
The door to the diner opened and a rush of wind flew by. The napkins that you left on the counter to reset empty tables flew around and all fell onto the floor. "Aw man!" You yelled as you rushed over to clean up the mess ignoring the group that walked in. As you were quickly picking up the napkins, a pair of hands came into view helping you. You looked up to see Poe Dameron, the local mechanic. His eyes met yours and he flashed his famous heartwarming smile.
"Hey there, Y/N."
You smiled back, "Hey, Poe." You stood up as Poe continued picking up the napkins, "Y-You really don't have to do that. I got it."
He finished picking up the remaining napkins and handed them to you, "There, now you don't have to deal with them."
"Thanks."
"Y/N!" Your friends sang. You groaned and pinched the bridge of your nose. Poe chuckled.
"I'll serve you and your friends in a bit."
Poe bit his lip, "No rush. Take your time. I get how your friends are."
As you walked over to your friends, they were all whispering and giggling. You stood in front of them, "What?!"
"Oooouuu, Poe Dameron was talking to you." Y/BFF/N teased.
"Stop it. Don't start. Don't any of you start." You pointed at them, "If you're not going to order anything, please leave."
"I don't know. I kinda want to see how everything plays out between you and Poe."
"Nothing is going to play out." You handed them menus and walked away. You stopped Cameron and asked her to take your friends' orders. She happily obliged and you made your way to Poe and his friends. You handed out menus, "Hey, there everyone!"
Everyone smiled and greeted you. You loved Poe's group. They were always so funny and joyous.
"Working hard, Y/N?" Snap Wexley asked.
"Always am, Snap!"
"That's what I like about you! You're so ambitious!" Snap exclaimed.
You giggled, "Oh really?"
"Yeah! Poe and I were just talking about you the other day too. Well, Poe did the talking. I just listened to him go on and on abou-OW!"
Poe smirked, "Sorry, was that your leg I accidentally kicked?"
Snap glared at Poe and handed you back the menu, "I'm sure you know what all of us want by now."
You nodded, "The usuals?" Everyone nodded.
You wrote down everyone's orders and was about to walk away until Poe spoke up, "Oh! Y/N! Extra sugar in my lemonade, please? I like things extra sweet." He winked at you and blushed a bit. You wrote down his requested and quickly left giving Jimmy the orders.
"Oh my God! Poe winked at you!" Y/BFF/N whispered loudly, "He's so into you!"
"Stop! He's not!"

Poe watched as you and your friends argued and laughed. He was too focused on you that he didn't know that Jessika was talking to him until she hit his shoulder.
"OW! What was that for!" Rey and Finn laughed as Poe rubbed his shoulder.
"Damn, Poe. You're practically drooling over her!" Snap stated with a big smile on his face. Everyone around the table nodded.
"Shut up, guys."
"Why don't you ask her out?" Finn asked.
"You know exactly why! I don't have the money! You know the shop doesn't pay us very well. I'm trying so hard not to eat out much because I still have to help my dad out with the rent! Times are getting tougher. Y/N deserves to go on a date to a fancy restaurant. She deserves to be treated like royalty! And I can't give that to her!" Poe slammed his head on the table frustrated.
"Is everything alright?" Poe heard your voice and immediately sat up straight.
"Huh? Oh yeah. Just remembered about how much homework I still have to do."
You laughed, "I hear ya." You handed out the drinks with Poe's being last, "Extra sugar for the sweetest guy I know." You chuckled as Poe's face lit up, "Your food will be out in a couple more minutes." Everyone thanked you and you were happy to see your friends getting ready to go, which meant they can no longer tease you about Poe.
"Have fun working, Y/N. Especially since You-Know-Who-"
"JUST GO!" You laughed as your friends waved good-bye and left the diner.
The door opened again and in walked the First Order, the rich kids that lived in your town that looked down on anyone who wasn't like them. Their parents worked in the business district of the town, therefore they thought they owned everything. Some said that they were even trying to get rid of the current mayor of the town.
They sat down at a table some feet away from Poe and his group. You saw that Cameron and Lance were busy serving other tables, so that meant you had to serve them.
"Hello, there. How may I help you all today?"
"Do all of your products come locally or are they imported?" The ginger and head of the group you know as Hux asked.
"They come locally. We like to help out our local farmers." You saw Hux and the rest of his group scowl.
"Do you have anything that isn't served in grease?" a tall blonde young woman, you knew as Phasma, asked.
Nope. You were not going to deal with this. No, no. Not today Satan. You smiled and nodded, "We have salad, soups, sandwiches, steaks, fish and pasta. If you actually read the menu, you would know that." the tall, black haired, young man you knew as Kylo Ren, snickered. Phasma glared at him.
He shrugged, "What? It was funny."
"That's enough, you two." Hux gave them a warning glare. He sighed and stated his order. The smaller of the three, Mitaka, said he'd have the same thing. Phasma ordered as well glaring at you. Kylo smiled as he gave you his order. You nodded jotting it down and taking back their menus.
"The audacity of that girl." Mitaka retorted.
Kylo scoffed, "Well, Phasma was being incredibly rude."
"I was simply asking a question." She gritted through her teeth.
"Ren, are you actually defending that waitress? She's beneath us."
"It's best to be nice to our servers. You never know if they spit in our food or poison our drinks." Kylo replied messing with his napkin. Truth is, he was always fond of you. The times he came in here, whether he was alone, with his parents, or with the Order, you always had a smile on your face. You were kind and talked to everyone. But since you were in the middle-class, Kylo didn't stand a chance. He'd be belittled by the Order, but sometimes...he thought about what it would be like. You hold you, kiss you, watch your chest rise and fall as you slept next to him. He wanted to give you the world. He wanted to shower you with jewelry, treat you to fancy dinners, travel with you. He had the money to do it, but would you ever let him?

"The food was mediocre and the service was terrible. Honestly, Ren, I'm never letting you choose a place to eat again. Let's go." Hux threw down the money on the table and stood up readying himself to leave. Kylo noticed that the remaining change would not be a sufficient amount for a tip.
"You guys go ahead. I'll meet you at Mitaka's."
"Why?" Phasma asked.
"I'm going to give an ear full to the management. Let them know how a real business should be run."
"You've come to your senses! Very well. See you in a bit." With that, Kylo watched as his friends left the diner. He watched as you approached the table sighing.
Kylo leaned forward as you gathered the empty plates, "I apologize for their attitudes."
You were taken back, "Y-You're apologizing?"
Kylo looked confused, "Yes. And you're surprised because?"
"Because the First Order never apologizes for anything. They treat people like with like we're the scum on the bottom of their shoe."
"For what's it's worth, I don't think you're scum."
"Oh, uh, thanks." Kylo stood and handed you a tip. Your eyes widened at the amount: $50. Usually people would give you a couple of bucks or, at most, a twenty, "Woah, what's this for?"
Kylo shrugged, "For your hard work. I come here often enough to see that you're determined to get your job done. You also deal with a lot of people like Hux. I admire you for that. You never let them get to you. You're always smiling."
You couldn't believe what you were hearing. Kylo Ren, second in command of the First Order group, is actually complimenting you, "How is it, that you've been in here so many times and this is the first time we've spoken to each other?"
"Well, I do have a reputation to maintain." He smirked.
You scoffed, "Right. Kylo Ren shouldn't be seen by his colleagues talking to some middle-class scum. Got it."
"That sounds a bit harsh."
"Because that's exactly how it is."
"Hey! Y/N!" You look to see Snap waving over for you.
"I need to go. Thank for the tip." You murmured and walked away. No way was Kylo going to let your first encounter with him end like that. He followed you over to Poe's table.
Before you could ask if Poe and them needed anything, Poe spotted Kylo, "Well, well, well. Look who it is. To what do we lower class folk owe the pleasure?" He stood up, "You know, you and your group got a lot of nerve coming in here after everything you all have done."
Kylo scoffed, "You and your kind are nothing but a nuissance. We're trying to make this city great. You and the rest of your kind are nothing but soiling this land. I mean, look at you." He gestured to Poe's tattered mechanic uniform,"You can't even eat in public without bringing in dirt and grease."
Poe immediately shot up and stood chest to chest with Kylo. You immediately came in between the two, "Hey! Hey! Settle down, guys! Come on. We don't need any drama in here."
"Y/N, him and that First Order." he said with disgust, "Are the reason we are struggling to get by! The mayor is trying to help us and what are they doing, trying to replace them with one of their no good businessmen, Snoke!"
"Snoke is wise and powerful! The mayor and the New Republic have done nothing to help save this city! Snoke will clean up the mess that the Republic and your little Resistance group has made!"
"Alright! That's enough!" You began to push Kylo back, "I believe it's time for you to go."
"But he-"
"Kylo, please."
Kylo sighed, "I'm sorry. Maybe, when you're not working, we can have a proper conversation."
"Fine, but please, just go."
You walked back to Poe and heard him ranting, "Seriously! The nerve of them! You saw them when they walked in! They hate us only because we're not rich like them! And they treated Y/N with so much disrespect! Oh, just one day, just wait. I'll beat them to a pulp."
You couldn't help but smile. Poe was always so passionate when it came to defending people. You knew he would happily die defending your honor.
"Alright. Settle down, tough guy. He's gone."
"Why was he talking to you anyway, Y/N?" Rey asked.
"Well, he was apologizing. Hux was being an ass, so he apologized on his behalf. He also tipped me really well."
Poe scoffed, "Probably because he felt bad for you. They see us as charity."
You shook your head, "He said it was because he always sees me working hard."
"I call bullshit. Listen, Y/N, you need to be careful around Ren and the rest of that First Order group. They hate people like us." You nodded knowing better than to argue with Poe, "Anyway, when's your shift over?"
"About a couple minutes."
"Great! I'll walk you home..if that's okay with you."
"Yeah! Sounds good!" Inside your heart was fluttering.
"Alright guys. You go ahead. I'll wait for Y/N to get off." Everyone nodded and waved good-bye to the both of you. Poe handed you his card to pay for the food. He followed you to the cash register, "So, Y/N, what are you doing after you get off of work?"
"Probably just gonna go home, watch some Netflix, and enjoy my time with Ben and Jerry." You chuckle to so yourself.
"Aaaww. Why don't I join ya?"
You look at him a bit surprised, "What?"
He shrugged, "Yeah, why not? Better to have company right?"
"Uh, yeah. I mean I guess if you're okay with that. But don't expect too much. I'm sure you'd get bored of me within in the first five minutes."
"I'd never get bored with you." He said softly. You couldn't help but feel tingly inside.
"I-um-thanks." Poe continued to stare at you with a smirk on his face, "I'm just gonna go clock out, get my things, and we can leave."
"Perfect."
When you went to the back room, you had to fan yourself. Poe Dameron was, honestly, too good for you. You felt like you didn't deserve someone like him in your life. You were also incredibly surprised that he's taken an interest to you. Or maybe he didn't? Maybe he's like this with everyone. Yeah. That's probably it. He can't be interested in you. No, sir. You can only dream.
When you and Poe left it was a bit chilly outside. Lucky you, you only brought a thin cardigan. You crossed your arms as you walked. The sun was still high in the sky, but you could see grey clouds rolling in. You hoped that it didn't rain on your way home. That would suck.
"So how's work treating ya?"
"Great! I love the shop! Han is a great boss. Makes it hard to believe that Kylo Ren is his son."
Your eyes widened, "Woah, what?"
Poe nodded, "It's true. Kylo and I, well, previously known as Ben, we used to hang out at kids. My mom worked for him and all that. So it just really bugs me how he's now with the First Order group thinking he's all high and mighty, when he started off like us." Poe kicked a small rock in his path and watched it tumble to the side.
You two walked in silence. You honestly didn't know what to talk about. You were always awkward when it came Poe. He's was just so..perfect.
Mitaka's servant answered the door when he arrived.
"They're in the meeting room, sir." The butler announced.
Kylo nodded and made his way down the hall to be greeted by two mahagony doors. He turned the knob and pushed the door open. Several people were seated at the long wooden table. At the head, sat Snoke.
"Ah, my apprentice. At last. Now time to get down to business."
