Prisoner's POV Continued:
Chills crept their way through my body. I hear the faint sound of something breaking. When my eyes open, I look around to observe the area. It's dark and shadowy. The air was stagnant but I could feel energy, static- something coming from a nearby pole. It helped me locate the first obstacle and I even ran into Lucky. He smiled and quietly came over. When I looked at the machine I knew exactly what it was and how to work it. Ciphers weren't new to me but I was still rusty. Lucky was about to teach me what to do until he saw my hands delicately and swiftly work their magic. "Damn! I didn't know you could to that", he whispered. "Once we finish up here we should consider splitting. I hate to say that you're first time here but, strategically..." Lucky's face grew guilty. "Don't worry about it. I'll get as many done as I can, you just stay safe", I pat his shoulder and we finished up the cipher. Two ciphers later I was sneaking along the border of the west side. I came to a wall and found another cipher across the path. Just as I was about to cross I heard heavy mechanical footsteps off to my right. My heart starting beating harder and harder, I went back behind the wall just in time to avoid their field of vision. The shaking in my hands reminded me to watch my breathing, I was panting more than I thought. The figure was so close now. I stole a glance at who I was up against, it took me a moment to process the giant robot penguin before me. I'd laugh if the circumstances weren't so dire. Some engraving on one of the penguin's lower panel read: Guard 26, Bonbon, Manufactured by-
I threw my head back behind the wall, I couldn't bring myself to read the rest. It triggered a flashback anyways and my body reacted before my mind could keep up, "Fuck!" I covered my mouth. The penguin, Bonbon, snapped it's head back to look my way.
I popped up off the ground and sprinted as far down as I could, still keeping along the edge so that I don't endanger another survivor. "Fucking of course he helped make that thing", I thought to myself. "Of course that bastard slapped together some murderous robot! Why wouldn't a pre-death creation of his come back to haunt me? Worst of all..." I turned along the wall just in time to avoid the attack. I didn't realize how close it had caught up with me. Still running, I look over to see the lawyer watching me from behind another cipher. My instinct took over, my body made a complete U-turn and darted straight for the hunter. I couldn't let it get near anyone else, we were so close.
It did mange to hit me in the arm when I ran pass but the adrenaline overrode the pain. With Guard 26 still following close behind, I heard the welcoming sound of the lawyer's cipher being completed. One left to go.
I lost it eventually, ducking between a tree and an old shed/barn thing. When the coast looked clear I let myself slump against the shed, my breathe heavy and my chest pulsing. I could've sworn I was tired enough to fall asleep right then, but the sound of slight rustling grew nearer and a friendly face peered from the side of the tree. "Luca!", exclaimed Lucky. "Riley told me what he saw. Let's fix you up a bit".
"Lucky I'll be okay. There's only one cipher left, don't worry about me", I tried countering his ease but he went ahead anyways. "No Luca. I may have my cowardly moments but friends are something I fight for," His parental tone threw me. When he went to clean off the cut we heard the exit doors sound off. "I'm really sorry about this-" Lucky placed the entire towelet on my cut then wrapped it up. My jaw clenched, I sneered and hit the shed a few times with my other arm, trying to cope with the stinging. "It's okay", I heaved. He helped me up and we looked around for any sign of a safe escape. He pointed far south from where we were but I couldn't see anything. "How can you tell where it is?" I inquired. "Eventually your eyes will adjust to each map's layout and you'll be able to spot the bright keypad from yards away", Lucky assured. "We'll head that way since it's closest, but be watchful of the hunter camping out nearby".
"And the other two?", my voice was weary. He turned to me and grinned, "They'll be okay too. If they need us after the doors open then I'll just have to... Brave it and come back". Lucky stuttered that last bit. I think I get it. The hunter probably targets stragglers after doors open, its the final part on their agenda if they've failed to defeat us before hand. Which means the hunters must realize that kidnapping someone after exits open would guarantee one of us coming to the rescue. "Let's hope we all get out of here then", I comment.
Making our way towards the door I notice a sound of steam being released into the air. My heart pounds yet again. I yank Lucky by the sleeve and take him behind a nearby cipher stand opposite of the steam. We watch closely with hushed breaths as the penguin waddled in and out of view. There was a brief moment where Bonbon considered coming closer, heavy steps approaching could be felt on the ground. This was torture with the door being just yards away. I felt an urge like before when I guided the penguin away from Riley, and before I knew it I was on my feet running away from the exit. "Luca!!", I hear from behind me. Bonbon turned back to Lucky for a moment. It took a step forward so I threw a rock at it, suddenly I could feel a strange aura eminating from the robot, like someone threatening "don't test me". The penguin continued it's pursuit on me. As I fled I felt the same wind as I did in my vision with the detective. My fingers stretched out, the pointer finger remembered the light graze of touching that letter.
I turned my head to see what progress Lucky was making, he appeared stressed as hell but halfway through. I did some quick math in my head and decided it was better to stall than to run back once the keypad code was implemented, an unlocked door doesn't mean it'll open very quickly after all. A broken piece of wood caused me to trip, the high speed carried me over into a poorly executed front roll, adding more pain to my arm injury. This time I couldn't see myself recovering very easily. Guard 26 loomed over me now ready to strike. The impact of the fall caused my migraine to return and, though I was used to this in prison, I wasn't looking forward to a giant robot being the one to kick me while I'm down. Accepting whatever was about to take place I just tried convincing myself that it's better to experience this now before I'm caught off guard later. I cough, my chest hurts from running and the fall. Bracing for impact my eyes shut and my arm shields my face, but suddenly Bonbon just... Stops. In an instant, the four of us survivors are back in front of the manor. I look around confused as hell but Lucky hugs me from nowhere. "You dumbass!", he says, "You didn't have to do that, I could've helped you out. I could've even taken the hit for you". My brain is still comprehending what just happened, "Lucky, why are we back here? Did I do something wrong? Actually, is ev-"
"Remember how Marge had trouble getting in the match earlier? The same thing probably happened to Bonbon. It's rare but it does happen. Not usually in the same match day but I suppose there's nothing impossible about it". Lucky paused for a moment, he suddenly got a frustrated look on his face. "You go get proper medical attention. I'm going to have a word with whoever didn't follow through on the backup plan".
"Please don't be mad at them", I insisted. "It was my idea to join in her place. At the very least don't blame anyone else in the group. The only person that was okay with me going in there was Murro". His eyes would've cut the window if they could. "Of course he was. He always claims his hog is more important than us. I understand loyalty to those you hold dear, absolutely. But placing innocent lives below an animal that doesn't face our dangers is irresponsible, it's even selfish". He had anger in his waddle as he approached the front doors, meanwhile Mr.Riley and I followed behind the seer.
From that day on, Lucky had taught me a lot of valuable information for going into matches. He applauded my maneuvering and agility, but he told me that no one would hold it against me if I wasn't able to save them. That was a tough thought to hold on to, but after a couple games I understood what he meant and how it wasn't actually impacting my morality negatively. He also taught me that I'm contributing plenty to the manor just by doing my best. This was really nice to hear, it even gave me my inventive drive again. I developed a system where we can see each other's injury status and communicate our progress from far away, as well as see exists and ciphers from a distance. Everyone seems to like it, we use it to this day. I've grown so much since my first day here, everyone else has, too. Once in a while I've been able to show around new recruits, plus the friendships I've had with everybody is something I never thought I'd have. Despite the nights where I still question if I deserve all this, things seem to be staying this way regardless.
BONUS BEFORE Y/N'S POV-
The Photographer's POV:
It's been some time now since that lanky fellow joined the group. I'm still trying to understand my fascination with him but... He's caught my attention on more than one occasion. There's something so unrefined about his strategy, more unrefined than usual. As a noble figure I really shouldn't waste my time. If he's so interesting though then perhaps he's worth it after all? Possibly even a threat? Not yet, not until he's on the same level as the veterans. Training under the Lucky Guy's wing does give him some advantage, but he can't get too comfortable now, not after that day with Guard 26. Speaking of- "Have you found anything suspicious in that bird?" I ask. "Hardly", remarks Luchino, "but you should probably be asking the man with an entire hidden lab to inspect the robot penguin". My eyes roll, "Yes, I know. You're not the one I wanted to ask in the first place. Burke is preparing for his match tomorrow so you, petty Biologist, are the closest we have to shuffling around in this bird until he's available again".
"You know a robot penguin is probably not going to have accurate anatomy to a real penguin, right?" said Luchino. Joker lifted from his chair, "I'm telling you, the Count just can't count!" His laugh nauseated me.
"Je suis vraiment coincé avec vous les genes".
"Oh come now Joseph, don't be like that", chimed Queen Mary. "What do you need to inspect Guard 26 for anyways?"
"All of you know what happened when that prisoner arrived, correct? Guard 26 malfunctioned that day- they probably thought it was a missconnection, but we know better. Something about him haulted Guard 26 in it's tracks," I was getting a bit flustered. The others started to notice just how invested I was. Each present hunter was now staring at me, but I demanded serious attention. "I'm not saying he's a threat or anything yet but we still mustn't underestimate him".
"*Disconnection".
"What?" I looked at Leo.
"You said 'missconnection' when you meant 'dissconnection'", Leo stated. Antonio snickered, causing Joker to cackle. I was seething.
Someday I'm going to understand that new boy. After Burke's night, I'll formally introduce myself.
