In the school building, Marinette met up with her at the stairway.

Alya: Hey.

Marinette: Hey. So, how was everyone's King's Day yesterday? *Some answered great. *

Alya: Nora got the crown. I was hoping to get it this year.

Marinette: Aw, there's always next year.

Alya: Hopefully.

Mylene: I got a crown this year.

Rose: That's great, Mylene.

Alya: What about you, Marinette?

Marinette: Bridgette got the crown; my grandparents came and well... something happened.

Alya: What happened?

Marinette: My Nonna came by, she gave us gifts.

Alix: Gifts like that?

Marinette: Well Marin a motorbike as a belated birthday present, Bridgette a coupon for a free body piercing, a makeup and hair coupon for me, and an abseiling coupon for Timmy.

Alix: Sound like bad gifts.

Marinette: The others said otherwise about how it's dangerous, not safe for any of us.

Alix: Oh.

Marinette: But things were all good again after they were all akumatized.

Alya: What happened? What made them akumatized?

Marinette: Do I have to get into details about that?

Alya: You don't have to tell us if you don't want to.

Marinette: Thank you.

Chloe: Just typical. After what happened yesterday with that old man, I'd figured that it was Dupain-Cheng's grandpa. Such an old brute.

Lila: Hmm... you don't say. *Chloe rolled her eyes in annoyance. *

Chloe: I want her to suffer, but no matter what I do. It always backfires badly!

Lila: That's the problem. You're always overthinking stuff, that's why it backfires. *She turned her head around and looked at Marinette, talking to her friends. * You need to study your opponents before making your move.

Chloe: Ugh, fine. But I want to see her suffer now.

Lila: All in due time. *She smirked evilly over at Marinette, and then the first bell rang meaning time to go to their first class. Outside of Luka's school, Luka parked his bike at a bike rack, he headed inside where he saw his friends by the lockers. *

Joshua: And that's when Chris just fell from a tree.

Christina: Is he okay?

Joshua: Yeah. Just had a minor fracture.

Christina: Wow.

Owen: Glad I don't climb trees much.

Luka: Hey.

Owen: Hey. Joshua just told us about the time his cousin fell from a tree.

Luka: Is he okay?

Joshua: Yeah. Just has a mild fracture on his left arm.

Luka: Ahh.

Amber: So, what did you do yesterday?

Luka: Well, it was Kings Day, so I had a galette with Marinette's family and my family.

Amber: Cool.

Christina: That's nice.

Owen: I tried one of the galettes, it was pretty good.

Luka: You could say that.

Amber: I just got the news that my Aunt Ruth is coming over.

Joshua: Sounds fun.

Amber: Not fun for me.

Joshua: How come?

Amber: My aunt is weird. She always shows her slideshows of her travels. That takes an hour. I fall asleep halfway. She makes us eat gross food and do chores.

Christina: Gross. Sounds like my parents when we go over our vacation photos.

Amber: We had a galette too. I got the crown this year. In your face Jason!

Joshua: Ha! *They saw the poster of the Peter Pan Play coming up soon. *

Amber: Heard there's gonna be an audition after school.

Owen: I'm trying out. Are you guys trying out?

Joshua: Nah.

Luka: Not this time.

Christina: I'll try it out.

Amber: Nope. *Owen signed up for the audition, so did Christina. *

Persephone: Step aside, losers. *Persephone, Asleigh, and Penelope smirked at them; they walked up to the bulletin board. *

Christina: Pushy much?

Amber: I figure you're auditioning too?

Persephone: What do you think, hippy? I'm trying out for the Tinker Bell role. *She signed her name on the roster. * See you after school, losers. *She walked away as her sister snickered and walked after Persephone. *

Christina: I was hoping they would do a Wizard of Oz play. She'll play the Wicked Witch and a house would fall on her.

Luka: (At least they're not worse than the Mean Girls Marinette told me about.)

In Ms. Bustier's class, Ms. Bustier wrote on the board 17th and 18th Century and underlined it.

Ms. Bustier: Okay, everyone. So far, we covered poetry topics and did a poetry test, which I graded over the weekend and handed back to you all before class ended. I have to say some of you have done well, while some of you can do much better and study poetry more.

Marinette: (Hope it's not me.)

Ms. Bustier: I want to discuss the Great Age of Monarchy through the years 1648-1789. Before we get started, I want to tell you what happened during the 17th and 18th centuries, that way you can spot the difference between those centuries. Consider this a little side note. In the 17th century, Europe engaged with the rest of the world through trade, exploration, and colonialism, from the Ottoman Empire to Spanish America, to the Dutch in southeast Asia. The 18th century was a period of intellectual, social, and political ferment. This time is often referred to as the Age of Enlightenment, for it was in the 18th century that the ideas of the previous 100 years were implemented on a broad scale. Write that down, please. *They all write down the first thing she wrote down and look up ahead. *

Alya:(This is gonna be boring.)

Ms. Bustier: Better take notes, everyone. This might be helpful for your next test coming up soon. *They get their notebook pencils and pens out, Ms. Bustier clears her throat and starts writing on the board as she talks. * By the 17th century there was already a tradition and awareness of Europe: a reality stronger than that of an area bounded by sea, mountains, grassy plains, steppes, or deserts where Europe ended, and Asia began— "that geographical expression" which in the 19th century was to see as counting for little against the interests of nations. But of course, in the two centuries before the triumph as a force, Europe exhibited a greater degree of unity than appeared on the mosaic of its political surface. With appreciation of the separate interests that Bismarck would identify as "real," there were diplomatic, legal, and religious concerns that involved states in common action and contributed to the notion of a single Europe. And then there was King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden, he saw one aspect when he wrote: "All the wars that are afoot in Europe have become as one." *She underlined that quote. * Who can tell me what he meant by it? *No one raised their hands for that. * Okay, I'll tell you all. His quote means that a European identity took shape in the work of Hugo Grotius, whose De Jure Belli et Pacis, which was a plea for the spirit of law in international relations. In the year 1625, that's also on the Law of War and Peace.

Alya: (So much to learn about the 17th century.) *In the bakery, Tom opens the oven gets a batch of baked croissants out of the oven, and places them on the table. *

Tom: Croissants are done, now to put in the cookies and muffins. *He put one pan of cookies in the oven and one pan of muffins in the oven next. Then, Sabine came back, and she saw Tom working. *

Sabine: The dogs have been walked.

Tom: That's good. Now we can work. *Sabine goes to the door, flips the closed sign to open, and unlocks the door. Then when she headed to the counter, some people started coming into the bakery, standing by the counter. *

Sabine: Good morning, what can I get?

Male customer: Just a chocolate donut, please?

Sabine: Okay, one chocolate donut. *She put in the total. * That'll be 1 euro, sir. *He reached into his wallet, pulled out 1 euro bill, and handed it to Sabine, she opened the register and put the money in, grabbed a small bag and put a chocolate donut inside, closed up the bag, and handed it to the customer. * Here you go, sir.

Male customer: Thank you. *He takes his bag and leaves the bakery, then the next customer walks up to the counter. *

Sabine: Hello, ma'am. What can I get for you?

Female customer: Hello. I would like 2 croissants, please. *Sabine put in the total. *

Sabine: That'll be 2 euros. *She reached into her purse, got out a 2 euro bill, and handed it to Sabine, she put the money in the register, got another bag put two croissants in the bag, closed it up, and handed it to her. * There you go, ma'am.

Female customer: Thank you. *She took her bag of croissants and walked out of the bakery. Then, another customer walked up to the counter. *

Sabine: Hello, sir. What can I get for you today?

Male customer: A jelly-filled donut, please? *Sabine put in the total. *

Sabine: 1 euro, sir. *He reached into his pocket, pulled out his wallet and got out a euro bill, handed it to Sabine, then she got another bag and put a jelly-filled donut inside, and closed it up. * Here you go, sir.

Male customer: Thank you. *He takes the bag and leaves the bakery. *

In school, Ms. Bustier went over the last bit of the 17th-century lesson.

Ms. Bustier: And to finish it off, Europe engaged with the rest of the world through trade, exploration, and colonialism, from the Ottoman Empire to Spanish America, to the Dutch in Southeast Asia. The intellectual sphere saw the scientific revolution and the early enlightenment, as witnessed for instance in the work of Galileo, Spinoza, and Descartes. *She underlined the final three words, and she faced the whole class. * Hopefully this will help you all understand the 17th century. What time is it?

Max: It's 8:25, Ms. Bustier.

Ms. Bustier: Thank you, Max. We have about 10 minutes until class ends. In the meantime, I have your poetry tests graded, so I'll pass them all back to you all. *She held the stack and handed them back out. * Very good, Adrien. You seem to know poetry very well.

Adrien: Thank you, Ms. Bustier. *He looked at his graded test paper, an A+. *

Ms. Bustier: Very well, Sabrina. *Sabrina looked at her paper. * Try to do better next, Chloe. *Chloe looked at her paper, she got a C-. *

Chloe: Typical. *She balled up her paper and put it aside. Ms. Bustier handed the last of the test papers to the rest of the students and walked back down to the board. *

Ms. Bustier: Listen, everyone. Literature is part of life, whether it's on history or the name has traditionally been applied to those imaginative works of poetry and prose distinguished by the intentions of their authors and the perceived aesthetic excellence of their execution. I will allow retakes on Friday if you're not satisfied with your score. You can do better if you want to pass my class and be able to graduate on time. Any questions? *Soon, the bell rang. * I'll see you all tomorrow, we will discuss the 18th-century lesson tomorrow. *Everyone gathered their stuff and headed to the hallways. *

Alya: I thought I did well on the poetry test. Not bad on a B+. What about you?

Marinette: An A+.

Alya: Wow. You're pretty good. Probably should've asked you for help on that.

Marinette: Maybe next test we'll have a study date.

Alya: Sounds like a plan. *They stopped at the lockers, started getting their science stuff, and headed to Ms. Mendeleiev's class. Amelia lends Carlie and Samantha some gum. *

Amelia: Glad our detention is over.

Samantha: And glad everyone is cool with us.

Carlie: What do we do with Chloe?

Amelia: Can't sink to her level. But we'll handle her when she's out of options.

Samantha: What do you mean "out of options?"

Amelia: You'll see soon enough. Let's go to gym class. *They head to the school gymnasium. Then, in Ms. Mendeleiv's class before the final bell rings for the next class to start, Juleka tells the others her relatives are coming over this weekend. *

Mylene: Sounds nice.

Alya: Maybe we'll come by for a visit and you'll introduce us to them?

Juleka: Yeah. (Just hope their last visit won't be too awkward. Especially for Marinette. Hopefully, she'll be okay with this.) Marinette?

Marinette: Mm?

Juleka: You'll be... okay seeing them again? You don't have to if you don't want to.

Marinette: I'll think about it.

Juleka: Okay.

Marinette: (If that Sylvia girl lied about getting better, I'll have to skip it.)

Then, Zoé and Sabrina were talking as they stopped at Ms. Mendeleiev's class.

Zoé: Sabrina, can I ask you something?

Sabrina: Yes?

Zoé: How did you and Chloe become friends?

Sabrina: I'm not sure. I can't remember. I guess I was just young and naive as a young girl.

Zoé: Really? Was always this mean to people? I know she's my half-sister, and I don't fully know her much.

Sabrina: I guess I didn't know what a friend was supposed to do.

Zoé: No wonder she called you a "patsy." *Sabrina got tears in her eyes at that. *

Sabrina: Can we talk about something else, please?

Zoe: Of course, sorry.

Sabrina: Thank you.

Zoé: But, hey. If you feel like talking, the others are here for you.

Sabrina: When I'm ready, I'll let you know. Need any help with algebra, social studies, or languages?

Zoé: Just a little rough on Social Studies. Mr. Howards said my academic is slipping a bit and I need a tutor. *Sabrina beamed. *

Sabrina: If you have any homework, let me do it for you, new friend!

Zoé: Sabrina. You don't have to do that. I can do my homework. But you can help me if you want.

Sabrina: Right, got it. (Must show her I'm not a Patsy) Then consider me your social studies tutor!

Zoé: Great. Think we start after school?

Sabrina: Great! See you in the library at 1500 hours, new friend!

Zoe: 1500 what?

Sabrina: It means 3 pm.

Zoe: Oh, sure! *They waved to each other, and Zoe went to Mr. Tenny's math class and Sabrina went inside Ms. Mendeleiev's class. Chloe and Lila heard their conversation and scowled. *

Chloe: How dare they talk to each other? And more importantly, why does my soon-to-be best friend again talk to my stupid half of a sister? It's a rule.

Lila: Perhaps now is the time for a quick change of plans?

Chloe: Not this time. Maybe when the time is right. *They both walked into Ms. Mendeleiev's classroom when the final bell rang for the second class to start. *
