Once Adrien and Marinette had entered her room, the two sat down on together on the pink sofa bed as they often did during Chat Noir's late night visits to her house. Something about this, however, was no where near as comfortable as those visits.
"... Are you disappointed it was me?" Adrien finally asked in a near-whisper voice after several awkward minutes of silence.
"What was that?" Marinette asked, still without looking up at him.
"Are you disappointed? That I'm Chat Noir?" he said again, this time in a much clearer voice.
"Disappointed? Why, no! Why would I be disappointed that the smart, handsome, caring boy from my class who I had actually had a huge crush on since the beginning was also the funniest, daring, most loving partner I could have ever wished for?" Marinette suddenly covered her mouth with her hands as if she had said something she shouldn't have.
It took Adrien a few seconds of silence to fully comprehend what her words had meant. Partner? Could that mean that Marinette was Ladybug? Once he thought about it carefully, it began to make sense. Not only were the two never seen together, but Marinette was his only classmate yet to be akumatized. After realizing that he had been staring off into space thinking for a few minutes too long, he decided it was best to talk to Marinette about it. It was then that he noticed she was in tears. He tried to put his hand on her shoulder to comfort her, only for her to flinch away.
"Just leave me alone! I know you're disappointed that I'm her, so just don't do anything! You can leave, and you'll never have to see me again!" Marinette exclaimed, tears streaming down her face.
"Princess, wait!" Adrien grabbed her hand to prevent her from walking away. When she had turned around in surprise, he took her other hand and stepped closer to her, intertwining his fingers with hers. "I would love you no matter who you are, my lady," he whispered in her ear.
"Adrien, I-"
"I was a fool for not realizing I had fallen in love with you as Marinette earlier on, and I couldn't be happier that the brave and confident hero I had loved from the beginning was also the girl who could see past my looks and riches and love the real me," Adrien explained as Marinette wrapped her arms around his neck, crying onto his shoulder.
"Adrien," Marinette let out a laugh-sob. "Mon chaton."
"My lady,"
"I love you."
And, in that time and place, it didn't matter that the world's fate relied on them. It didn't matter that they had a math test next Tuesday. Nothing else mattered. The two heroes needn't think of anything else in this short moment of pure happiness and love in each other's warm embrace.
