"May his soul find peace and in Lord's name we pray, amen," the priest bowed his head as he finished his prair. Towers stayed silent. Most of them tried their best not to look at the coffin displayed with beautiful flowers and a portait of him.
It was his identification photo but blown up. It was the only recent photo they had of him. Even then, it still brought smiles to the mourning towers whenever they stared at it. Scout always had the most goofiest grins.
Commander couldn't even bare to even look at it. He was dressed in his black commander attire, much like everyone else here. Medic sat next to him, tightly holding his hand and stroking her thumb against him.
She wore a knee length black dress with a black cardigan. Over her face was a decorative, black veil. Many of the other medics were wearing the same as she was. Funerals weren't new to any of them, but the death of such a young man was stabbing at everyone.
Commander couldn't bring himself to see the coffin buried however. So after the service, he and Medic instantly went to his office.
They had wasted a whole two days. A whole two days because one of those things out there took away their Scout. Commander didn't know what to feel. Anger and grief clouded his mind.
"Commander. I have.. his bag. Perhaps it would be a comfort to see what he left?" Medic offered as she carried in the deceased tower's bag.
Commander looked up from his desk and stared at the bag. The bag he packed for Scout. It wouldn't hurt to see what was left. Medic unzipped the bag and placed it on the desk, stepping back to let Commander look inside.
He first pulled out the water bottle. It was nearly halfway finished. At least he was keeping hydrated. Snack wrappers littered the inside. The candy he had secretly packed was found. Commander found comfort in that Scout got to have some candy before his demise.
Then he found the box of colors he packed. They were a new box when he put them in, but they were opened now. Commander gasped, there was at least one drawing in here.
Commander dumped the contents out on his desk and shuffled through the empty paper. "Commander? What's wrong?" Medic asked, stepping over to him.
He ignored her as he shakily lifted the drawing to his eyes. It was a drawing of him and Scout at the range. They were shooting pistols at empty soda cans. Scout was shooting one off the fence in the drawing, just like he did nearly a week ago.
Commander slumped back in his chair and stared. His heart ached and his eyes were hurting. Never had Commander had anyone enjoy his company so much. Not even Medic liked to be around him as much as Scout did.
Sighing and putting the picture down, Commander began to think about what Scout's life could of been like. Perhaps he would have been a great squadron leader. He would of been teaching the newer generation of towers. That was ripped away.
"Commander. You are hurt. Maid is still willing to take over your duties. Please sleep for a little bit, you haven't slept in the past two days," Medic begged him.
Commander thought about it. It was true, he hadn't had a wink of sleep since learning Scout was dead.
However, Medic wouldn't leave him alone about it. "Fine.. but.. could you stay with me for a bit?" he was a bit afraid to ask. Medic stared for a moment. She was surprised by the request.
"Uhm, of course. Come on, let's get you to your own bed," Medic took Commander's arm and helped him up. She walked him to his room, keeping him up. Commander was mostly dead weight, he was exhausted.
Medic could only imagine the bags under those sunglasses. Pushing open his door, Medic got Commander to lay in bed while she went back to close the door.
"Please.. lay with me," Commander begged. Medic was once again surprised. Never had he been so needy for physical affection. Medic would remember how he would scream at her for even looking at him. The memory was funny as she purposely just kept on staring at him for a whole hour just to piss him off.
Pushing aside the memory, Medic went back to him and climbed into bed. Commander wasn't exactly quick about placing his head on her lap, but he wasn't slow about it either.
"Sleep. Please, you're in pain. You'll get sick if you don't," Medic began to gently stoke his head. Her gentle touches worked instantly as not even a moment later Commander was out.
She huffed as she relaxed herself, "Sleep well. You deserve it so much." Medic decided that she wasn't going to move for a while, so she too fell asleep with Commander.
"Hello? Is anyone there?" Commander called out. He was in a lush, golden meadow. The grass was tall, barely coming up to his chest. The sound of windchimes twinkled in the steady wind, but there was none in sight.
Commander walked through it, turning and craning his head to see if he could find anything. The sky was a brilliant white, no blue in sight.
As he walked, he must of tripped over a rock as he stumbled forward. When he looked back to see what it was, he saw it was a pistol. It was the kind that was usually given to scouts.
Commander looked up from it and lightly gasped. Scout was behind, only a couple of feet away. His back was turned to Commander.
"Scout! Scout, I'm here! I'm right here!" Commander called as he attempted to jog over to him.
Before he could of gotten an arms length away, two giant figures rised from the tall grass. They were titans.
They both had green skin and black hoods. One wore an eyepatch while the other... the other was Gravedigger. What was Gravedigger doing here?
"Are you sure you are willing to do this? You will have no memories of who you were. They will be your enemy," Gravedigger asked as he placed his hand down in front of Scout.
Commander watched, confused. When he tried to run forward again to pull Scout away, chains shot up from the ground and bound his wrists, ankles, and throat.
He tried to call out, but the chain around his neck choked him. Scout wasn't paying attention. He was currently thinking.
"S-Scout!" Commander choked out as he tried to fight the chains. Then, Scout turned around to look at Commander directly.
He was different. His cap was gone and his eyes were glowing red, much like the two titans in front of him. Commander watched as Scout turned his whole body to face him.
"Will I never have my memories back? Even after I die?" Scout asked, still facing Commander. Gravedigger was silent for a moment. "No. You won't. I heard that you were brave though."
Commander watched as Gravedigger turned to him. They could see him, but they refused to say anything. Scout blinked, then he decided to finally say something to Commander.
"Thank you for teaching me how to tie a double knot!" Scout said with a smile. Commander tried to stop him, but the chains were yanking him back.
Helplessly he watched as Scout climbed onto Gravedigger's hand. The last thing be saw was Gravedigger lifting him up and turning away, carrying Scout into the unknown.
Commander woke up, gasping for air. He jolted upward and sat up in his bed, breathing heavily. Feeling around his neck, he winced at the dryness. How long ago was it since he last drank some water?
"What's wrong?" Medic got up sleepily. She had stayed with Commander the whole time. "I had a dream... Scout was there. So was Gravedigger.. and some other titan with an eyepatch," Commander began to describe it.
He rubbed his face and groaned into his hands. Was it even real? Looking over at his alarm clock, he noticed it was eight in the morning. He usually got up at six.
"You hadn't slept in two days. You slept a pretty good sixteen hours," Medic leaned over to him and placed her head on his shoulder. That gave Commander some questions.
"Were you sleeping with me the whole time?" Commander asked. Medic went red in the face and slapped him down with a pillow. "I-I didn't want to wake you up! I gotta get to work!" Medic slipped out of the bed, put on her heels, and quickly left.
Commander laid there, pillow on face. He didn't know what to feel. Medic never acted like that. She would usually twist one of his fingers until he said "uncle".
His mind quickly wandered back to that dream he had though. It seemed so surreal. Perhaps he could ask one of the titans, they might have an answer.
