Ivory's POV

I looked at Atticus, shocked. My pair had to watch his parents die in front of him...?

"After that, Carmen and I moved to California. We thought just two teenagers in that big city could blend in easily, and we were right. After a year,we sarted our own lives. I got a job as a life guard during the day, and at night, I waitered at one of the most expensive restraunts in LA. Tips were good, and I lived alone. But all I did was breath, I wasn't living. Until two years ago, when Carmen told me about this place. Now, I avenge my parents everyday, and I stop it from happening to others," He says, giving me a lopsided smile.

"So that's what you were doing when you found me?"

"Yep, we got some intel that the Exotasi were looking for someone in New York so I was sent to gather more information, and I happened upon you on your little date," He said, his tone only half teasing. I rolled my eyes.

"Never going to let me live that one down, are you?"

"Nope."

There was a knock at the door and Carmen came in, the smell of food wafting from her hands.

"I come bearing gifts," She promised, a grin on her pretty red lips.

"How's little bird taking the news?" Carmen asked, handing Atticus a burger.

"I am fine, thank you," I said, gritting my teeth. "I speak perfect English, Atticus doesn't need to translate for me."

Carmen wordlessly threw a burger at my face, which I barely had time to dodge. I glared at her, but she ignored me.

"Carmen..." Atticus warned.

"What? I was just offering her food," She blinked her big eyes innocently.

"She's a vegeterian, Car."

I blinked at him, surprised. Then smiled. He remembered.

Carmen looked at him,and then back at me and she became silent.

"It's ok. I think I have something you can eat in the kitchen, Kitten," Attie said, standing up from the couch and leaving towards the kitchen. I was tempted to follow him, but Carmen's eyes met mine as she sat in Atticus's freshly vacanted seat.

"I never really thought Atticus would find a pair," She mused. "He's 23, after all."

"I never thought I'd have one either. I'll be twenty soon," I stated softly.

"Do you have a pair?" I asked her.

She looked at me funny.

"No."

"How old are you?"

"22."

"Oh."

It was quiet after that, uncomfortable until Atticus came back in. He handed me a cup of greek yogurt and some toast.

"I wasn't prepared for a vegetarian roomie," He smiled charmingly. I accepted the food, gratefully with a small grin of my own.

"Well, I'll let you two love birds be," She finally decided, standing up. Atticus nodded at her, and she left. I peeled open my yogurt and slurped it without a spoon. Atticus watched me intently, so I looked up at him questioningly. A grin broke out on his face as he took me in. He leaned forward as I looked at him, confused, and licked my upper lip. I blushed bright red at the feeling of his warm, wet tongue and jolted away from him. He laughed at my reaction before settling comfortably against the comfy couch.

"Well don't look so surprised, Kitten. You'll be dealing with much more than that from me," He spoke, relaxed.

I gaped at him.

"Atticus!"

He looked unabashed.

"And this is why I'm not sleeping in the same room as you."

He laughed heartedly, maybe the first genuine laugh I had made from him.

"You will be in the same bed, nevermind room, as me. You are mine, Kitten."

I ignored him and slurped on my yogurt.

"So who do you think they were looking for?" I wondered, thinking back to our previous conversation.

Attics sat in thoughtful silence.

"The Exotasi? I know it was a recessive. I just don't know who or why," he finally admits.

"What are Exotasi?"

"That's the government. The evil part anyway."

"There's a good part?"

"Well... there's a neutral part I guess," he relented, rubbing his neck. I could feel my eyes drifting shut. Now that I ate something I felt exhausted, like I'd  been weighted down with bricks. Before I knew it, I passed out on the couch, vaguely listening to Atticus as he switched on the TV.
