Then, when I was 29, I was put on a mission that would change my life.
I was called to the bridge of the helicarrier, the new SHIELD base that I now lived on that was a massive flying helicopter carrier, for an unknown reason and on the way, I bumped into Barton.
"You were summoned too?" Barton asked in his normal jokey tone.
"Yeah," I said with a slight smile below my hood, "I thought I had April off but apparently Fury has other ideas."
"Same here, I was going to spend some time with Laura and the kids."
"Oh, how are the munchkins?" I asked with fondness.
"They're good, Lila just turned three." He smiled at the mention of his kids.
"And I missed it? Damn it. I'll have to come with you to the farm at our next break."
"It's a date." He confirmed as we headed into the bridge and over to Fury at his command center.
"There you two are." He sounded annoyed even though we were speed walking to get there quickly, "I have a mission for you both." He handed us both a tablet and we began flicking through it as he explained the mission, "You'll both be heading to a research facility in the desert of New Mexico to guard and keep an eye on the research going on there regarding the Tesseract." I looked through the given information and found a picture of a glowing icy blue cube that radiated a pale blue smoke like a big cube of dry ice.
'It's kind of pretty... Meaning it's incredibly dangerous.' I nodded as I skimmed through some of the information on it, confirming my suspicion.
"Agent Barton will be in charge, so you'll report any information gathered to do with the mission," he explained, looking at Barton, before looking at me and continuing, "And Agent Morgan will be your back up." I'm always backup but I don't mind, I hate being the center of attention and being in charge does that to you.
"Understood sir." Barton confirmed in a formal tone, completely different to his casual jokey one he talks to me with.
I nodded before asking my question, "When do we leave?"
Fury looked at me before answering, "First thing tomorrow so go pack and read through the information pack." We both nodded and walked out off of the bridge.
"Finally, I'm getting off of this flying hell machine." I whispered into Barton's ear as we left which made him laugh and I could feel Fury glaring at us, so I nodded to Barton and teleported to my room, wanting to get out of Fury's sight as soon as possible.
'I can't wait to see my new room at the facility.' I thought to myself as I pulled my bag out from under my bed and started packing some clothes inside.
'We're going to be residing in some remote facility in a desert of New Mexico, what could go wrong?'
