chapter one
new.
Christina hummed lowly, a vibration in her empty chest. Her eyes were closed, but her mind was wandering. It was the first time in a few months that everyone was just sitting, relaxing and waiting.
Bella was due to wake up anytime now. Edward had stayed upstairs waiting for his wife; while everyone else surrounded the first floor. Rosalie was cuddling Renesmee, rocking her back and forth as she slept in her arms. Alice and Jasper were cuddled on the couch, the former going through different magazines while Jasper watched TV with Emmett. Jacob was snoozing against the foot of the chair, while Seth entertained Annie by playing with her action figures and dolls. Carlisle was sitting by Christina's feet— them being on top of his lap— rubbing his fingers gently up and down Christina's bare shin. Christina was cuddling Greyson close, him sleeping on her chest and she sung lowly to him.
They were worried. Worried about the growth of both babies. Renesmee was growing just slightly faster than Greyson was; but Carlisle concluded that it was probably because Renesmee had more human than vampire, while Greyson had more vampire than human. Since Renesmee's parents were full of each, she is fifty percent of both— but Greyson was a mystery to them still.
Christina has mentioned Bella's theory about how she could be some percentage of human due to her vampire power— it not allowing her to change fully. Carlisle took it into consideration, but he agreed it would make sense that Greyson gained humanity from her. They concluded that he was probably seventy percent vampire.
That also brought up the conversation of immortal children, and the worry that came with it— but Greyson had a conscious. He knew what he was doing, and he's never bitten anyone. Unlike Renesmee, who finds it hilarious to bite Jacob randomly. It was a surefire way of finding out she wasn't venomous— they all agreed that Greyson could be.
The other difference between immortal children and Greyson was that he was growing along with his cousin. Renesmee looked to be about eight weeks old now, with Greyson right behind her looking like six weeks old. They were only born three days ago.
Both babies liked to live off of blood more than formula. Grayson would do it every once and a while to please his parents, but Renesmee was stubborn. Christina would chuckle as Edward and his daughter would go back and forth in the way that Renesmee could— a hand on Edward's face and a sour look to both of them.
Annie was also very helpful with the babies. She loved to help get them dressed in the morning, and she would take turns holding one or the other while they slept. Greyson absolutely adored his older sister (though at the rate that he was growing, they weren't sure who was going to be older than who). Annie didn't question their increased growing, and maybe it was because she didn't realize it yet. She knew that they were different than she was, but she didn't ask any further questions after that.
Edward said that she was trying to put it together in her head before asking questions. That made Christina amused at how independent she was trying to be— but she was also worried. She didn't know how to explain immortality to a six year old. Annie knew that there was a difference between the wolves and the family— she's seen Seth's wolf more than the mother would like her to. Annie knew that Seth and Jacob were special but a different kind of special than her mother and father. One was warm to the touch, and the other ice cold.
Christina and Rosalie would make sure to put the blood in colored bottles for the babies, and whenever they could get them to drink formula, they'd put it in the clear bottles. It was just one more way of trying to hide the truth for a little bit longer.
"It's time," Alice spoke up, coming out of a vision.
Christina popped open her eyes, meeting them with Carlisle as the hummingbird heartbeat upstairs settled into nothing— much like hers did a couple months ago.
Jasper, Emmett, and Carlisle got up from their seats, and walked near the stairs. A precaution just in case Bella decided to go rampage and attack whoever was around.
Christina continued to run her fingers up and down Greyson's back as she sat up more on the couch. She rested her back against the arm of the chair. Greyson made a noise of complaint from the movement, making the mother's lips twitch.
Edward and Bella were having a very soft conversation upstairs, making Christina's shoulders relax only slightly. Bella seemed to be in her right mind and conscious of who she was and who Edward was. It was a good sign.
"Renesmee," Bella breathed out.
"She's incredible," Edward answered— Christina could hear the smile on his face.
"Where is she? I want to see her."
The men tensed as they prepared themselves to hold off Bella as Edward called out, "wait, wait. You need to get your thirst under control."
The footsteps paused upstairs as Bella registered Edward's words. "But I don't—"
"Don't worry," Edward answered. Everyone listened to their footsteps move closer to the south side of the room, where the windows were located. "It's easy. Instinctual."
In a blink, the couple was gone and into the woods, letting everyone go back to their original spot.
Greyson opened his eyes and looked up at his father as he moved back towards the couch. The newborn gave his father a smile, a pleading glint in his eye.
Carlisle held his hands out; Christina easily placed Greyson in Carlisle's arms, and watched them walk into the kitchen with a giggle.
"Momma." Annie came jumping over as she took Greyson's spot in her arms. "When is Aunty Bella gonna be better?"
Christina had to tell Annie that Bella was sick to avoid her sneaking into the office. Christina was sure that Annie put two and two together already and was comparing this time to the time Christina was 'sick'.
"Soon, baby."
Annie smiled excitedly as Carlisle came out of the kitchen with two colored bottles— one for Grayson and one for Renesmee. The little girl in Rosalie's arms opened her eyes as soon as the blonde grabbed the bottle out of Carlisle's hands. Renesmee held her hand to Rosalie's cheek, making the blonde laugh.
"No, it's not formula," Rosalie reassured.
Carlisle stood in the corner of the room and fed his son as Christina got up to help Seth entertain Annie— the poor wolf barely able to keep his eyes open from his last patrol.
"Get some rest, Seth," Christina shooed him away.
"No, I'm okay—"
"I don't remember leaving an option." Christina raised an eyebrow towards the young wolf. He visually gulped before taking the spot on the couch the mother was pointing at. As soon as Seth laid down to close his eyes, Christina smiled softly and turned back to Annie.
Carlisle chuckled at his wife's mothering instincts, making her turn around with a familiar gleam in her eyes. He felt the fire, that being around Christina brought, flutter in his stomach. He gave her a wink before looking back down at their son.
He was a perfect combination between Christina and himself. He has Christina's green eyes, which Carlisle was more than happy to see; he missed seeing the familiar green look up at him. He has Christina's nose, but Carlisle's smile. He has Carlisle's face shape, and blond hair— but it was darker than his own from Christina's interference.
He was perfect; but not in the way that his vampire side made him out to be (even though it did). He was perfect in the way that he viewed Annie as well. Carlisle was bias when he looked down at his children— but he was sure every parent was.
Everyone's eyes looked up as they heard Edward and Bella arrive back. Jacob stretched shortly before hitting Seth's leg as he walked by to go outside. Christina scoffed as she had finally managed to get Seth to sleep; but the kid was wide awake as he followed his alpha.
"You're still here," Bella muttered as she looked at Jacob, Seth running into the woods behind him to catch up with Leah.
Christina was mindful of what was going on outside, she knew that this was Jacob's test— but it meant more to him this time than it did when he did his test with her. She knew that Carlisle would be able to protect Greyson as she watched over Annie— who was the most at risk. The rest of the beings that had humanity were half, of not more of something supernatural. Annie was full human.
"So are you," Jacob answered. "I didn't expect you to seem so you." He paused. "Except for the creepy eyes."
Christina chuckled remembering how much she hated the red eyes. She was sure Bella was the exact same.
"I would keep my distance for now," Bella warned as Jacob took a step forward.
"It's safer for the babies to see how you do with me first," Jacob explained.
"Since when do you care about Renesmee and Greyson?" Bella asked, suspiciously.
There was a second's pause, making Christina chuckle. She knew that Edward would wait until Jacob explained how he imprinted on Renesmee to her— it just made it all the more funny to Christina.
"All right. Take a whiff."
A step was made forwards along with a pause, and everyone in the household stood still.
"Well, I can see what everyone's been talking about," Bella muttered. "Jake, you really do stink."
Everyone chuckled, Rosalie and Emmett more than others. Christina got up from the floor as everyone prepared for Bella to come inside the house. Jacob and Seth entered first; the youngest and Christina sharing a smile as he walked closer to her to help protect Annie.
"Annie, when your aunt comes inside, don't run up to her, okay?" Christina explained lightly.
"But why?"
"Because she's still in pain," Christina said as she picked up her daughter, Seth stepping in front of them both as Carlisle moved closer to her as well. "And you don't want to hurt her. Let her come to you first."
"Okay, Momma."
Everyone held their breath as Bella and Edward walked up the stairs, pausing as they reached the top. They all watched as the newborn backed up a space closer to Edward.
"Welcome back," Christina joked.
