[Everything deserves a happy ending, and today I thought that I will give you comrades one!]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No one's POV
It's been decades since your death, and let me tell you, the Onceler never forgave himself. He never met another woman, was never interested in finding another one, he just wanted you back. He sat alone in his cottage, regretting everything he had done, he wish he could turn back time, but that was impossible. Everyday he stared at the word the Lorax had left him, "Unless" thinking about what it meant. And today, he saw the opportunity to make a change...
Onceler's POV
Recently, this boy has been visiting me to know about trees, why? I don't know, maybe it's a girl. I would do anything for the woman who I love, anything to get her back... it's been many years, living with regret, boiling with guilt, drowning in loneliness.
"Hellooo? You there?" Ted shouted from outside, I snapped out of my thoughts and looked through the wooden planks which boarded the window.
"Ah your back! Watcha got there?" I asked, wedging my arms through the planks to motion to him. He lifted up a bag full of marshmallows!
I could've squeeled like a little girl, that's if I wasn't old, had weak lungs and a raspy voice. I brought down the whisper-ma-phone, which he poured the marshmallows into. I slurped it all up and chewed, Ted stared in awe and laughed. I finished eating
"Thank you Ted! Now, where did I lead up to... Ah yes!-"
Flashback
It was a few days after (y/n)'s funeral, my mind was fuzzed and I couldn't get any work done. Knowing that I didn't have the woman I love next to me made my heart rip itself into a billion pieces, especially since that her death was all my fault.
I slammed my head onto my desk in anger as my mind tortured itself with memory's of her, they kept on coming and coming and COMING! My hands pulled at my hair as tears flowed down my eyes
"Please.. stop it! BRING HER BACK PLEASE!" A puddle of tears formed on my desk.
My eyes widened as I heard a knock at my door, I rubbed my puffy eyes with my green gloved hands
"Give me a second!" I hollered as I tried to sort myself out. After a few seconds of heavy breathing and mental preparation, I called the person in. My control freak mother walked in with a smile on her face
"Hello Oncie! So... Business has been a little slow recently, and since you ran out of the very important meeting" I rolled my eyes at the way she emphasized 'VeRy iMpOrTaNt' "they pushed back the date due to circumstances. Do you think you can... You know..." I gave her a stern look, waiting to hear what she had to say.
"Forget about (y/n)?"
My eye twitched and anger erupted from me, I shot up and glared at her
"What the fuck do you mean? Do you not understand?! I LOST THE WOMAN I LOVED, MUM! I DON'T CARE ABOUT THIS BUSINESS ANYMORE. I. WANT. HER. NOTHING ELSE!" My breathing was heaving, my fingers digging into my desk so I can control myself
She gulped
"Yes, I- I know! But, she's gone! She's out of your way, you can get so much done! You don't have to waste money on her pointless med-"
"SHE WAS NEVER IN MY WAY, I DIDN'T WANT TO STOP PAYING FOR SOMETHING SHE DESPERATELY NEEDED, BUT SOMEONE WOULDN'T GET OFF MY BACK! NOW. GET. OUT." I growled, she gave me an offended look and turned around, leaving my office.
I sighed in annoyance and stroked my fingers through my tangled hair, and laid backwards into my chair. I groaned as I heard a certain voice coming from the balcony
"So how are things?" The Lorax asked sarcastically, I spinned my chair to face him
"What are you doing here?"
"Happy yet? You feel that hole deep down inside you? Or do you still need more?" The Lorax growled
My eyes widened in anger and I marched over to him
"Look, if you've got a problem with what I'm doing, why haven't you used your quote, unquote "powers"to stop me?" The Lorax looked up at me, with pain in his eyes
"I told you, that's not how it works."
I chuckled "right, I forgot, you're a fraud. I need you to get out, now." I gestured to the stairs, the Lorax jumped down from the ledge and looked up at me
"Why? Do I make you uncomfortable? Remind you of the promises you made? The man you used to be? Or the woman I tried to protect from you?"
My teeth clenched
"You know what? You can just shut your mustache! My conscience is clear! I have done nothing illegal, I have my rights, and I intend to keep on biggering and biggering and turning more truffula trees into thneeds" the Lorax fell backwards into the ground.
"But (y/n)'s-!"
"And nothing is going to stop me!" I finished, my face turning concerned as me and the Lorax look to the right.
Where the last tree, on (y/n)'s grave, was chopped down. My mouth fell agape, remembering that I told my employees to not cut that one down.
"That might stop you..."
Flashback end - time skip
I finished the story and Ted stared at at the wasteland in shock
"So this is really all your fault. You destroyed Everything.." I nodded grimly
"Yes, and each day since the Lorax left, I've sat here regretting everything I've done. Staring at that word 'unless' a-and wondering what it meant. But now I'm thinking.. well, maybe you're the reason the Lorax left that word there." Ted looks up at me, stunned.
"Me? Why would he leave that for me?" He asked
"Because unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better." I looked to the side, wiping my tears "it's not..." I got up, glancing at the old picture of (y/n) and I, picking up the last seed I found next to (y/n)'s grave and tossing it down to Ted.
I told him what to do and where to do it, he gave me a determined smile and walked over to his scooter, turning it on.
"I won't let you down!" He called out and drove off, I looked at (y/n)'s grave
"I know..."
Time skip
It's been a few hours after Ted left, sitting and waiting to watch the sky go back to blue, and the air to clear. I stared at the picture, my thumb traced over (y/n)'s face, I sighed and looked out between the wooden planks, my mouth fell open as the sky was turning. I heard singing in the distance, which was coming from Thneedville. I grabbed my axe and swung at the wooden boards, I lean out the window as I listened to the singing. I smiled as tears began to well up in my eyes.
"Thank you, Ted.."
After a few days since then, truffula trees began to grow everywhere again. I opened the door and stepped outside, I inhaled the fresh air and sighed in satisfaction. I began to water the trees outside of my house, humming a little tune in the process. I heard something as a shadow cast over me, looking up and watching a swomee-swan glide down and quacking.
I smiled, knowing that everything was back to normal... Nearly. A bright light loomed over me, I was confused and looked into the sky again, my heart pounding as he came back. I stared at him in awe as he flew down and landed softly on the rock he left decades ago. I laughed, unable to control my joy and engulfed him in a hug. He hugged back
"You've done good beanpole, you deserve.. what was once lost." He pulled away and looked behind me, I stared at him confused and turned around. (Y/n) stood there with a smile...
She looked as beautiful when I first saw her, her (e/c) eyes where full of colour again, her face smooth and untouched, she looked so fragile but beautiful - like a flower, which would fall apart at the slightest touch. She wore white silky robes, which framed her body like a goddess, and her (h/c) (h/l) hair flowed in the wind like a waterfall.
I shakily stood up, and slowly walked over. My hand caressed her cheek and she smiled, I hugged her tightly as tears trickled from my eyes. Her arms around my neck and she giggled softly. After a few moments, I turned to the Lorax and smiled
"Thank you.."
"That's not all beanpole." The Lorax grinned, I looked at him confused and then back at (y/n), she held out my hand and I looked at it, noticing the wrinkles were gone. I placed my hands on my face, feeling that my beard was gone! I laughed out of joy
"I'm young again!" My voice even sounded younger! I grabbed (y/n) by the waist and hoisted her up and twirled, we laughed and cheered together and the Lorax watched with a smile on his face.
I put her back down, still laughing slightly and turned to the Lorax, who walked up to us. I lifted him up and held him like a baby, (y/n) giggled as he kicked around
"Cmon, pancake time!" I exclaimed and held (y/n)'s hand, while holding the Lorax in my other
"Ooh I've missed your pancakes Oncie.." (y/n) sighed, looking into my eyes lovingly
"And I've missed you, I love you (y/n).. please don't leave me again.." tears at the brink of falling from my eyes.
"Don't worry Oncie, I won't..
I promise..."
[Shit a lot of this was pointless, especially when Onceler and Ted were talking but yknow, I hope you enjoyed this <:)]
