CHAPTER TEN

||delicate||

" is it cool that i said all that? 'cause i know that it's delicate "

***

After Olivia had ultimately decided to join her two friends for a meet-up with kids from their school at a lake, they promptly grabbed their swimsuits and walked over, past the 'White Way Of Delight' as Anne had named it.

When they had made it there Ruby was waiting in front of a pond.

"Olivia, Anne, Diana, glad to see you here." Ruby smiles at the trio and they repeat the action back. "Everyone is over there by the waterfall." She points to behind the tree line where there's shouting and laughing.

"A waterfall? In Avonlea?" Anne asks, her mouth gaped open.

"It's a thing only a few have the pleasure of knowing." She smiles. The four of them walk past the weeping willows and towards the school kids who are jumping into the water and sitting on the rocks next to the waterfall. When you first walked past the trees you were met with a roaring, cascading, sideways river of water. To every side, there were trees on the banks but the left of the water there were rocks with teenagers sitting on them, some eating food, others talking loudly.

"This is absolutely mesmerizing." Ollie gapes as she looks around.

"It's usually a tradition for the kids to come down here once or twice before winter." Diana informs her and she nods her head.

"I hope you all brought your swimsuits." Charlie says as he and Moody step forward with smiles on their face.

"Diana made sure we did." Anne nods and Charlie looks to Olivia.

"C'mon, I'll show you around." The brunette follows the boy and Diana gives her a wink before she shakes her head and turns around.

"So how have you been?" Charlie breaks the silence as the two walk to the edge of the rocks that overlook a small pool of water.

"I'm alive." She jokes and he lets out a hearty laugh.

"So, here is where you jump into the water. If you prefer not to jump, just over to the right is some sand that leads straight into the lake." He states. "Would you care to join me for a swim?" He asks, taking off his sweater and undoing the buttons of his shirt.

Olivia's eyes widen and she looks away, cheeks red with embarrassment. "I think I'll sit this one out, thanks." She smiles at him.

"Suit yourself." He shrugs and runs off the rocks into the water, landing right next to Moody and Billy.

"Wow, I didn't think you'd actually come." A deep voice says from behind her and she turns around to see Gilbert.

"Trust me, it wasn't my idea." Olivia laughs coldly.

"Well if it makes a difference, I'm glad you came." He says softly, sending her stomach into a whirling mess.

'Why am I like this?' she asks herself.

"I'm sure you are, I mean, I'm amazing." she jokes and a moment of silence passes between them before they both start laughing.

"You know, I don't know very many things about you." Gilbert says, stepping forward. "Care to indulge me in what Olivia Fontaine is like?"

"She's the youngest in a family of four and she was born in France." Ollie shrugs.

"Really? I couldn't tell by your last name, Ms. Fontaine." Gilbert chuckles and she rolls her eyes. "Tell me more about her."

"She's a troublemaker who made her family move four times." Josie steps in, glaring at Ollie. "Not to mention her father drinks like there's no tomorrow and the only reason why her mother won't leave him is because she has no one else to go to."

"I'm sorry, Josie. When did my personal life become any of your business?" Olivia snaps at the blonde.

"When you wouldn't listen to me, that's when." She sneers, taking a threatening step forward. "Ever since you arrived in Avonlea, you've brought nothing but trouble. But then again, that's just a normal day for you, right?" Every step that Josie takes, Ollie takes one in reverse.

"In fact, I have a good idea. Why don't you just go back to where you came from?" The Pye girl finishes, shoving Olivia's shoulder. She stumbles backward, tripping off the end of the rocks and falling into the water.

Her dress pulls her down as she tries to push herself up but it's no use. Olivia never learned to swim. She never lived near any body of water so she found no use in it. Regret creeps into her veins as she wishes she would've asked her brother to at least tell her what to do because as she sinks farther into the pond, mostly because of her dress but also the force of the waterfall above her.

She kicks her legs and flails her arms but she has no luck. Not until a pair of arms wrap around her body and pull her back up above the surface. She immediately gasps for air, choking on the water that found it's way into her lungs.

"Shh, it's okay." The person who saved her whispers and she looks to see Gilbert. Her savior.

He carries her bridal style onto the bank where she sits on the sand, coughing.

"Ollie!" Anne calls to her friend as she and Diana rush to her. "Are you okay?"

Olivia nods, briefly looking at them before landing her gaze on the boy who stands to the side of them. They follow her gaze to the dripping Gilbert Blythe and Diana rushes to him and gives him a hug then turns back to Anne.

"We should go get you a jacket." The Barry girls says, dragging Anne away.

"You alright, miss?" Gil asks her, sitting down to her right. She feels a weight on her shoulders and notices he put his jacket over her shoulders.

"You know, that was the first thing you ever said to me." She says, turning her head to look at him properly. "You saved me then from Billy Andrews and now you saved me from Josie Pye."

"Well, more like I saved you from the water." He teases and she punches his arm.

"Just take the compliment, Blythe."

"Fine, considered it accepted." He smiles. "Can we be friends now?"

"I appreciate what you've done but that still doesn't mean I've forgiven you for what you called me." She sighs. "It's hard to forgive someone once they've said nasty things about you. You insulted my intelligence and called me a ditz. That's not something that easily forgiven in my book."

"I know and I'm sorry, but it's okay," He shrugs, looking ahead. "I'll wait for you. You're worth waiting for."
