After two months of vacations, finally, the second year of Monsters University begins for April, Randall and the Oozma Kappa. It's the start of the first day of the year, and the campus is starting to fill itself with many monsters. It's getting real full of people. A bus is driving in front of the academy and stops. The door opens up. A few students climb out and among them, one of them, one you know now since a bit of time, has joined them out of the bus. That same monster, is none other than April Slyther.
She hasn't changed a bit since the beginning of the holidays. Apart from now starting to wear a bun more often and have two small braids on the sides of her head. She likes to wear her hair like that. She wanted to change a bit. She feels excited today. After all those trips around the world, she finally comes back to the academy. And she kind of missed her friends. The Oozma Kappas, the lessons.... Johnny. She did miss him a lot somehow. As she enters the campus, she immediately walks to the dorms building with her bags in hands and back, at least until someone working there stops by to get those bags and offer to bring them up to the dorm. There, to the dorms, she gets back the keys of her old dorm back, since she had to give them back before the holidays would start. Then she walks up and unlocks the door, entering inside and packing her affairs up inside, almost like the dorm was before. Only few new objects are there and few less, like photographies or books. As she finished, April stands still in front of her dorm and looks at it, arms crossed. She breathes in and then out, with a smile.
"Hello again, old room.", she says, having a little moment of nostalgia.
She then starts walking out of her dorm with her school bag and her books packed in it. She walks out of the dorms and marches towards the scare building. That's when she suddenly gets startled by a-
"ROAR!"
April jumps, turning around with a yelp and her arms covering her face in defense. But she then realizes who that monster who scared her was. And that he isn't alone. They were laughing at her reaction when he scared her.
"Don! You guys!", she exclaims happily.
"In person.", says Don Carlton back, "Good to see you again, dear April."
April is standing right in front of the Oozma Kappas in person. And everyone is happy to be seeing each other again after so long.
"Good to see you too.", answers April.
"Ready to start this horrifying brand new year?", asks Art to her, confidently.
"Oh heck I am.", she answers.
"Well, let's get going then."
So now they are walking together to the Scare Building. And while that, they start chatting.
"So, how have the holidays been to you all?", April starts the conversation.
"Pretty good. Me and my mom have organized a week to go to an attractions park.", Squishy says.
"Oh that's great. I suppose you were there just you and her?"
"Actually Don was with us too.", Squishy deadpans.
"Huh? Really?", April asks, surprised.
"Yep. Me and Ms. Squibbles have become a couple since the end of the Scare Games event.", Don admits, smiling contently, "It was so much fun at this park. We've bought all the photos taken on the many attractions. I'll have to show it to you one day."
April stares shocked by this sudden revelation.
"Well, I've honestly stayed at home all holiday long. Just chilling and relaxing. And having fun. Like true holidays.", Art continues on the conversation, putting apart the subject of Don's relationship.
"And we've travelled to Ingria for two weeks.", says Terri.
"And two weeks in Roassia. I wasn't up for Ingria so we made a deal.", says Terry.
"What about you?", Squishy asks April.
"I've travelled all holidays with my family to.... let's say almost everywhere.", she answers.
"Wow, interesting.", says Don, "That reminds me of when I was your age. I really wanted to travel everywhere around the world, just like you did. I wanted to discover many things and get to know new people. I had a need of change from my comfort zone and so I...."
Don is monologuing around his past while April, at a moment, spots Johnny Worthington not far away with his fraternity companions. She smiles when she looks at him. He was walking with the guys with bags in hands towards their house. When the others were chatting and not paying attention Johnny has started looking around himself, searching for someone. And then he spots her too. He forms a peace sign with two fingers and heaves it up in the air as a greet to her, smirking. April waves to him, returning the greet.

Finally they all enter in the building, walking through the big classroom to get to their seats. April sits behind the Oozma Kappa, on the third seat floor to the right side. They wait for the lesson to start and sort out their books. April notices, as she looks at the entrance of the building, Randall entering in. She frowns sadly, knowing how it goes on between them. And then behind him, there are a few new monsters entering in too.
"Either didn't succeed last semesters, or have been admitted recently....", she thinks in her mind.
Those new students sit down on the left side of the very front seats. Randall has taken a seat to the back. April is intrigued by them. But she stops staring at them and looks back to her own books. As soon as the room was filled with the Scare majors, Professor Knight steps in the classroom. He walks to the blackboard and has clapped his hands together, looking at all the students surrounding the room on their seats.
"Good morning to everyone. Welcome back. To have come to this year's Scare 102, you have made proof of tenancy, determination and most of all, scare. And for that, I am proud of you all. But this isn't over. The show must go on for all of you. And I am expecting better performances than last year for every single one of you. I do not wish to be disappointed. And if I get disappointed, you better not try to figure out how the Dean would feel. All clear?", he starts, looking expectantly to the students.
Most students nod, gulping at what he said. Others stare a bit pale. And more others don't react.
"Good. Now, before we start, there are a few new students that I wish to introduce you to.", the professor sorts out a sheet of paper, and naming the students with a wave of a hand to them, "So, welcome to you, Mollie Murrow, Kenton King, Fanny Fritz, Frank Fritz and Bob Bulb."
Those nominated students all nod to the Professor with respect and greet, accepting the welcome.
"Well, now that this is done too, let us begin this semester with a new topic you should take as important if you want to be a great scarer; the approach.", Professor Knight introduces the new subject of the third semester, "You should know that when entering a child's room door, before you scare anyone, you should succeed to arrive to them first. You cannot, and I mean it, scare anyone by just being too far from the child. And you can't also do it if you get caught. This semester, you will be taught to how to approach a human child when entered in the room before scaring and without it hearing or spotting you. Take out your Scare books and turn to page 38."
As he says so, everyone takes their books out, for some of them who didn't get them out of their bags before, and turn them to the page assigned. April concentrates herself on what the Professor is teaching while everyone is looking in their books.
"Psst. Hey.", someone whispers out.
April heaves her head up and looks around to who is making those sounds. She then stops at the gaze of one of the new students sitting to the front right. She is a female monster with small round glasses. She has porcupine long hair and a round face with a small muzzle. She has hazelnut brown eyes and brown fur. She also has long arms and legs and a tiny stomach and torso. She has claws on her tiny hands and feet. She makes a sign with one of her hand as if writing something before merging her hands together as if praying and smiling awkwardly. April stares at her for a bit before understanding what she asked for. A pencil. She probably forgot hers. So she sorts out in her pencil case and sorts out a pencil she doesn't use at the moment. She elbows to a student next to her and hands them the pencil with a whisper.
"To the brown monster right to the front please. Pass it.", April doesn't know her name.
The monster nods and takes the pencil and repeats her action by telling the student next of him and passing the pencil. Every student concerned and called out does the same before the pencil arrives in the hands of the porcupine monster. She winks at her.
"Thank you.", she whispers out, smiling contently before turning her head back to her book.
April smiles internally. She doesn't know who that monster is, but for now, she does look pretty nice.
-
The first lessons have finished. Now the Scare Majors can take a small ten minutes break before the next lessons start. April has decided to stay nearby the Scare building, down the stairs, clutching against its wall. Like this she could clear up her mind a bit and empty herself of so many thoughts she has. That's when two people are walking towards her, one of them waving at her enthusiastically.
"Hey! Hello, there! Remember me?", she calls out.
April's attention is now turned to the voice of the female and she notices that it is the porcupine monster accompanied with another porcupine looking monster next to her. The other porcupine is taller than her and is male. His porcupine hair are shorter and he is slimmer than the other porcupine. He kind of looks biased and careless. But seeing the porcupine female she helped before in class, she smiles at her, waving back.
"Hello. You new in the Scare Program, am I right?", she asks.
"Yep. I'm Fanny Fritz and this is Frank, my twin brother.", she waves a hand showing him as she told his name, "By the way, thanks for earlier. What a clumsy being I am to forget such things like pencils."
The monster known as Fanny rolls her eyes at herself, before sorting out something from one of her school bag's pockets on her back. She then hands it over to April.
"Here.", she says.
"Oh thanks. You know you could have kept it until the end of the lessons?", April demands, taking the pencil back from the porcupine's hand.
"Well, before the next lessons start I will get back to my dorm to get my pencils I forgot. That's why.", Fanny smiles, "You know, it's nice to meet new people around here. And I am glad me and my brother met you."
April feels her heart warm up by that saying, surprised to be hearing such a nice thing and that this monster is rather nice.
"Gee, thanks. It's nice to meet you too, Fanny. I'm April Slyther.", she tells, contently.
Then Fanny turns to her brother, noticing he's been quiet. She frowns.
"Come on. Won't you say anything? That's not how we greet people.", she scowls lightly.
He shrugs, smirking ignorantly.
"If that's what you want.", he says, walking towards April and looking down at her, "Why hello there.... Angie is it?"
"Uh, April.", April answers a bit uncomfortable that he called her otherwise.
"Whatever.", he mumbles quietly, "Frank Fritz here. I'm surely new here, but don't judge me by it. I am the scariest monster you are looking at right now. Just wanted to tell you this, otherwise if anytime there will be a performance in class, you would be terrorized. Just admiration is enough for me. Please and your welcome."
April stares blankly at him. She couldn't believe what she just heard. What was that all about? Fanny gasps and frowns more, outraged.
"Frank!"
"What? It was the best introduction of myself. You can't blame me for that and you know this sister.", he says.
"Well if you say that you are the best in class, then why don't you show everyone in a scare class as performance?", April suggests, raising an eyebrow up still confused of his behavior.
"But naturally missy. What a great idea you got. Some girls are clever here on Monsters University. Right sis?", Frank teases Fanny who is becoming red on her face of shame and of anger, "Well then, I don't think there is need of my presence here anymore, so I'll be going off and let you girls chat. Toodles."
He shuffles her sister's head harshly before walking away, whistling. Fanny huffs.
"And to think I pleaded him to make a better impression of himself....", she grunts before walking to April, "I am really sorry April. He's mostly like this and doesn't for once even try to be nice and humble."
"Don't worry, it's not the first time I met guys like him.", April assures before shaking her head out of those thoughts about Frank's attitude, "Anyway, welcome to Monsters University. You know, I can't wait to be studying with you in class. You'll see, the program is rather cool."
"Thanks.", Fanny smiles, "Me and my bro are probably the youngest in class, but that because we did study so hard and in the end, we've been rewarded with a year less of study at MU."
April's jaw dropped.
"Really?", she asks.
"Yeah. Well, I kind of found hard at first to believe I could have afforded myself so much advance in studies like this.", she chuckles awkwardly.
"Well, well. I can see that there's a newbie with you, ey Rookie?", calls out someone.
April and Fanny turn to who said this and so they notice someone walking towards them. April smiles contently, knowing who that is.
"Hey Johnny.", she says, "This is Fanny Fritz. She's a new student in the Scare Program. And Fanny, this is Johnny Worthington the 3rd. President of one of the MU's fraternities."
"Precisely Roar Omega Roar fraternity.", Johnny says with a smarmy look.
"Worthington? I know that name. Your grandfather has been one of the best scarers of Monstropolis and beyond.", Fanny thinks out.
"Indeed. Terrifying right?", he says proudly, acting like he usually does with most people on MU, "Anyway, I need to talk privately to Slyther over there, so excuse me missy."
He wraps an arm behind April's back and pushes her away to talk in a corner privately. April looks behind her as she's being dragged away, seeing a confused Fanny staring at them go. April smiles awkwardly at her and waving at her, signing her that she's sorry and indicating to Fanny that he is a bit like Frank. Which makes Fanny snicker and nodding that she understands, walking away to the dorms to get her pencils.
After noticing that they are less surrounded by people and away from Fanny, Johnny starts talking.
"So, you changed a bit since the holidays, am I wrong? How you been, missy?"
"I didn't change THAT much, did I? I'm pretty fine actually, nice of you to ask that. You?", she asks back.
"That doesn't matter. Holidays?"
"They were pretty nice actually. Well, I did kind of miss you a bit I have to admit.", she giggles.
"Aw how cute.", he says softly, "Well, since you seem to be feeling good and having had great days, and that you so missed me greatly, then I should be trying to propose something."
April now looks curiously up to him.
"Propose?", she asks.
"Yeah.", he now lets go off her and walks in front of her with arms crossed, still wearing his smarmy smile on, "I have thought that since it's been so long since we have seen each other or talked, I thought that, you know, maybe this evening we could hang out somewhere?"
April's eyes widen of surprise.
"Just you and I. There won't be my pals to bother you around, don't worry.", he shakes his hands aside, assuring her, "The cantina's not always the best place to eat something tasty, so let me make you try some other place. We could buy ourselves something there and then we could hang out through the streets, or elsewhere if you got better ideas."
April doesn't know why, she kind of had a feeling she could see him have loosened a bit off his smarmy look and kind of looked lightly embarrassed, even though he surely is doing his best to hide it. But that idea, it kind of looks nice. And she's kind of surprised that he was even proposing this. She is surely free right after the lessons, but how come Johnny is parting off from his fraternity pals more just to hang out a bit with her? Maybe during the evening, she could be talking about it with him. But otherwise, she thinks that she could enjoy his company after all this time they haven't seen each other. She grins up at him and nods.
"Ok, sure.", she answers.
