Elise smiled wide when heard keys jingling at the front door and knew Natasha was finally home. She had been waiting for what seemed like forever. The anticipation was killing her.

But then the front door slammed closed and her smile drained.

"Well that doesn't sound good." She mused and waited for Natasha to walk into the apartment.

"Hi." Natasha grumbled when she turned the corner.

She didn't dare look Elise in the eye. She knew she couldn't do that just yet.

Elise kept her eyes trained on her girlfriend. She knew from the beginning there was a good chance this wouldn't work out but she tried to remain optimistic.

"I'm assuming this is a no?" Elise asked cautiously as Natasha shuffled closer. Her shoulders slumped and her head down.

She didn't respond to Elise's question but instead took a seat across from her and rested her chin on her arms. Still not looking into Elise's eyes.

Elise's heart melted a little. She was discouraged too but seeing how much Natasha cared was endearing. It only consolidated her love for this girl.

"Babe, this isn't the end of the line. There are more out there." She soothed and reached for Natasha's elbow to rub it softly.

Natasha didn't react. She just let Elise comfort her.

"Maybe it wasn't meant to be." Elise tried to make up for it.

Elise herself thought this was the one. She couldn't help but feel sad it didn't work out.

"It WAS meant to be, El." Natasha said in a defiant tone.

"I thought so too, babe..." Elise stood from her chair to go to Natasha's side and give her a hug but before she was able to do so, Natasha's arm came up between them and placed something on the counter...

A bottle of champagne.

Elise stopped. Her arms still extended for an anticipated hug as she was just a step away. Now she paused and stared at the bottle on the counter. And then slowly, she let her gaze travel to Natasha.

"...We- we got it?" She asked softly, nearly a whisper. Only now noticing Natasha might be playing her.

Natasha finally let her eyes meet Elise's. She nodded up-and-down.

"We got it." She whispered in response and prepared for Elise to crush her in a hug.

She didn't have to wait long.

...

Natasha held the bottle in her hand and a huge knife in the other. She stood in the center of the kitchen, facing Elise. Both of them with huge smiles on their faces.

"Just do it already." Elise nearly whined as the anticipation had her on edge.

Natasha smoothly sliced the top off the champagne. It was one of her hidden, special talents and she so rarely got to use it. She made it over to the glasses in Elise's hands before a drop could spill.

She placed the bottle on the counter after pouring and held her glass up to Elise's.

"To us... for finding 'the one'." She smiled.

"To us... for being new home-owners." Elise grinned back as they clanked their glasses together and took a sip.

...

They finished their glasses and Elise poured another for both of them. They wanted to celebrate a little longer.

Natasha took this chance- when Elise was happy and excited- to try something. It was worth a try.

"And here's to finally getting a dog!" She playfully raised her glass up again.

Elise shook her head and laughed as she walked over and gently grabbed Natasha by the cheeks.

"You were doing so well." She joked in an endearing voice as she moved Natasha's head side-to-side before letting go.

"Worth a try." Natasha shrugged and stole a kiss from her girlfriend before she pulled away.

The dog thing could wait. She had all she needed right here, right now.
