Getting Engaged.

To be honest, I'm not sure how military girlfriends and wives do it. I was dating a hockey player and there were times where he'd be gone for a week and I wasn't sure how to handle it. There were a lot of tears, a lot of time spent in one of his hoodies, and way too much cheesecake consumed. I wish I could say I got used to it, but it never got any easier throughout the time we were together.

It was late on a Thursday night when they got back from their Canada trip. Early Friday morning would be a better thing to say, I guess. Sidney had left his car with me while he was away, he said he wanted me to pick him up when they landed. Even though he knew how much I hated driving his car.

I had fallen asleep at nine but set an alarm for three in the morning so I'd be there on time. I had a problem with getting out of bed once I got comfortable and fell asleep. It wasn't the same without him though. Most days we got up at the same time to get to work but on the weekends I'd wake up at noon to him cooking. Sid always laughed at my ability to sleep in. We had been living together for a few months now, even though my parents didn't want me to. Coming from the strong religious background my family has, they didn't want me to live with Sidney when we weren't married. That may not have made my family happy, but I'm still their favorite daughter.

After putting a vest over one of Sid's sweatshirts and throwing some baggy sweats and my uggs, I got in his ugly range rover and turned the key. The remote start was a savior on night's like this. It was freezing outside. I turned the radio station to the Pulse and pulled out of the driveway. The driveway wasn't too long, but I was so tired it felt like it took hours.

I had arrived a few minutes before their plane landed. I got out of the car and leaned on the door, waiting for my boyfriend to walk over and we could go home to the nice warm bed. I had started dozing off when I felt Sid's soft lips on my forehead.

"Hey babe." I lazily opened my eyes and smiled. I was glad to see him. Sid wrapped his arms around me and it made these rough few days all worth it. He pulled away from me and smiled his half crooked smile. "I missed you." I said into his chest. He was so warm, I didn't want to leave his embrace.

"I know I'm warm and all, but can you look at me for a minute?" I lifted my face off his chest and looked into his hazel eyes. I'm sure I'm biased, but they were the prettiest eyes I've seen. "I wanted to wait until we went out to dinner tonight, I guess that's not happening. I've been in love with you for the longest time. I know it's going to be hard, but I know this is what I want. And hopefully what you want too." He grabbed something from his pocket and got down on one knee. "Will you marry me?"

The ring he had bought was unreal. I understand he has the money to buy something like this, but I hope he didn't think I expected this from him. I would have settled for a ring pop, I just know I wanted to be with him. I was so tired that I didn't realize the rest of the team was still standing by their cars, waiting for my reaction. I couldn't help the tears from rolling down my cheeks, I was speechless.

"I would love to spend the rest of my life with you, Sid." He took my hand and placed the ring on my finger before kissing me. I could hear his teammates clap and shout at us.

"Come on, babe. Let's go home." He lead me over to the passenger side of the car and opened the door for me. When we got back to the house, he carried me inside. We were both so tired, we crashed as soon as we hit the mattress.

"I love you," Sidney mumbled before falling asleep. I'd be waking up to his face for the rest of my life and I couldn't wait.
