It was another bright and sunny day at beautiful Bondi but I was a bit grumpy because my alarm woke me up. I'm the youngest trainee lifeguard in the blue so I have to prove myself to stay in the long run. The boys, and Jules, are like my brothers and sister. My best friends are Maxi, Jethro Jesse, Jackson and Jules. Hoppo can be intimidating when he wants to be but Deano and Harries tell me "it's only to keep you on the right track".

I got out of bed at 5.20, got dressed, ate and headed down to Bondi which, fortunately, is only a 10 minute walk from my house.

I walked into the tower and greeted Maxi, Jesse, Harries and Whippet, who are always early.
"Gonna be a busy one today lady and gentlemen"- Harries
"How come?"- yn
"Mayor election, always gonna cause a disaster"- Maxi
...
A few hours later most of the boys were scattered in buggies or in the tower. I was in the buggy with Maxi and Jesse down at backpackers (South Bondi) with Jethro in the tower alongside Harries and Deano, who intently watch to make sure I'm doing well. After a few minutes a hand went up, I stripped off the blue top, with my swimming kit on underneath, and started to paddle out the the person. The waves were building but I managed to get the person on the board. The rip was too strong so I needed to turn the board and head to the rocks to get out. As I paddled over to them, a huge wave threw me off the board and I slammed onto the jagged rocks of backpackers. The girl however, managed to stay on the board and glide back to shore. As soon as she realised I was gone she went to Jesse and Maxi in the buggy. Even though her English wasn't the best, the message got through.
"The lifeguard girl, is gone, wave, threw her off board"- Person
"Shit let's go, radio for Jethro to get the med kit and send Quinn down here too"- Jesse

I felt like time was moving at snails pace as I saw Maxi and Jesse running towards me. I was stuck on my side with the side of my face on a flat rock. I felt frozen. Numb. I could only just open my eyes but they closed again.

"Yn? Yn? Can you hear us?"- Jesse
I forced my eyes to open and I saw Maxi, Jesse, Quinn, Jethro and Deano around me.

"Hey there yn, where's the pain?"- Deano
I groaned in pain but I couldn't move.
"Yn tell us where the pain is if you can"- Quinn
"I can't feel below my neck"- yn
The boys all shared the same worried look as Quinn grabbed the spinal board.
"Okay Maxi hold her head. Guys, we're gonna line the board up behind her the. gently roll her flat and place a neck brace on. Yn were gonna give you the green whistle through an oxygen mask, so just take deep breaths"- Quinn
I couldn't respond without pain so Jesse helped put the mask on my nose and mouth. Maxi held my head gently as the boys lined up the board. I couldn't feel anything when they rolled me but I knew I was in pain. Deano put on the neck brace then it was a joint effort to lift the board and carefully walk to the tower without slipping. Once inside the tower Jackson came over with a new green whistle mask and changed it for the old one. The paramedics arrived, so Quinn explained what they'd done and what had happened. I'd regained some feeling in my hand and Maxi was the nearest one next to me so I carefully reached out and grabbed his hand.

"It's alright now, they're gonna look after you and tomorrow, we're gonna come see you"- Maxi
"Come with me"- yn
"I'm sorry but I have to work yn"- Maxi
"Please. I'm scared"- yn
"Okay, I'll talk to Hoppo"- Maxi

He let go of my hand, walked over to Bondi Pavilion but just as the paramedics started wheeling me to the ambulance, Maxi jogged next to me and told me he could come with me. It was a massive weight off my chest knowing that he'd be with me as he's one of my best friends in the blue.
