Alice awoke with a start, she was glad to be away from her nightmare but what was awaiting her was much worse. She couldn’t feel her toes “What if they had fallen off because of the coldness of the night!” she thought but then she opened her eyes. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing, her whole body looked like a human jungle but then she saw that the things wrapped around her were moving. “It must be a dream, this can’t be real!” she thought but no matter how many times Alice closed and reopened her eyes, the vines were always there. Alice tried hopelessly to scream but the vines had already covered her mouth, her whole body felt completely paralysed and no matter what she tried she just couldn’t move. The only thing she was still able to move was her eyes, when she looked over at where she dropped the book there was nothing but a mass of vines. Alice remembered reading something about vines in the book before she had fallen asleep but she couldn’t remember what it had said. “If only she had listened to her grandfather,” Alice thought. He had warned her about the book, now it was too late.

She felt something piercing her skin; a trickle of warm blood was running down her wrist underneath the vines.

Alice felt something crawling in her veins and then suddenly, after being completely numb, her whole body was on fire but not like the normal kind of fire. The fire was not hot and scorching but like ice. It was like she was burning up from the inside, the pain was excruciating. Even though the fire inside of her hadn’t subsided or even died down Alice knew it was the end. The whole room lit up like a bright star in the sky and the vines started to close up the circle that was untouched, Alice felt as if there were another persons presence in her body. Then, as if someone had turned off the light, everything in Alice’s world went black.
