Reader's Perspective
Carlos Ortiz's android was sitting at a desk handcuffed in the interrogation room. Hank was on the other side of the table, trying to get it to talk. The rest of the group were sitting behind the one-way glass.
"Why'd you kill him?" Lieutenant Anderson asked.
No answer.
"What happened before you took that knife?"
Still no answer.
Connor, Gavin, Chris & (Y/N) were all listening intently, but they weren't getting anything so far. Reed scooted over to where the female detective was sitting.
"We're not getting anything out of this piece of plastic."
"Oh, come on Reed. Have faith."
"We're bothering to actually talk to this plastic shit why exactly?"
"Because he's a suspect, Gavin. Now, I came here to work, not listen to you whinge."
She moved her chair away from him.
"How long were ya in the attic? Why didn't you try to run away?"
Hank clicked his fingers in front of the unresponsive deviant before slamming his hands on the table.
"Say something goddammit!"
The android just sat there, looking down at the desk to not make eye contact with any of the officers.
The Lieutenant stood up shaking his head.
"Fuck it, I'm out of here."
He walked out of the room to join the others.
"We're wasting our time interrogating a machine, we're gettin' nothing out of it!" He slouched down into the chair.
"Could always try roughing it up a little. After all, it's not human."
"If you were abused daily & you were only defending yourself, would you like to be hurt even more Gavin?"
"No-one asked for your opinion (L/N)."
"Neither did they yours Reed, just because you can't face the fact that you're wrong doesn't mean you need to take your temper tantrum anger out on me."
She hissed back, they ended up face to face, both spitting venom.
"Why are you standing up for a fucking machine? Even worse, one that killed its owner!"
"He was defending himself."
"You called it a he, Christ's sake (Y/N) they're nothing but pieces of plastic built to serve!"
"Oh please, you probably yell at your microwave on a daily basis!"
"Will you two SHUT IT?" Hank split the bickering pair up. (Y/N) glared at Reed & Reed glared back. A silence fell over the room.
"Androids don't feel pain." Connor broke the silence innocently. "You would only damage it & that wouldn't make it talk. Deviants also have a tendency to self-destruct when they're in stressful situations- "
"Okay, smartass," Gavin intervened. "What should we do then?"
"I could try questioning it."
Reed let out a laugh & (Y/N) elbowed him in the rib, causing him to wheeze & cough.
"What do we have to lose? Go ahead, suspects all yours."
Connor walked into the room before standing in front of the glass, in the interrogation room it would be a mirror, it was as if he was admiring himself. (Y/N) couldn't help but smirk, holding back a giggle.
"What the fuck is it doing now?"
He went back to deviant, looking at several photos. He sat down across from the deviant, its head was still down. (Y/N) could see him analysing the android.
They were sitting there,
waiting.
"You're damaged, did your owner do that?" He asked. "Did he beat you?"
The deviant simply sat there.
"I detect an instability in your program. It can trigger an unpleasant feeling, like fear in humans."
Still nothing.
"Knew it wouldn't get a word out of it." Gavin snarled.
"Will you shut up?" (Y/N) spat.
"Listen," Connor continued. "I know you've been through a lot, but you need to help me understand what happened. I'm on your side, I want to help you. But there's nothing I can do if you won't talk to me."
The deviant shot its head up, looking around in a frantic expression whilst Reed kept picking at the android's attempts to make it talk on the other side of the glass. (Y/N), of course, defended both the RK800 & deviant.
"What-" The deviant spoke.
"Holy shit, shut up Reed! He's talking!" She turned to face the glass.
"What are they gonna do to me?" It asked, turning its head.
"They're gonna destroy me, aren't they?"
"They're going to disassemble you to look for problems in your biocomponents. They have no choice if they want to understand what happened."
"Why did you tell them you found me? Why couldn't you just have left me there?"
"I was programmed to hunt deviants like you, I just accomplished my mission."
It looked down.
"I don't want to die."
"Then talk to me."
"I- I can't."
All the officers watched eagerly behind the glass.
"Face it, this plastic prick is too soft to get the answer out of it, we're wasting our time."
"He's come this far, no way we're giving up on him now."
"It, (Y/N), it."
"Him." She turned back to the scene unfolding.
Connor slammed the file of photos down, the others all jumped slightly.
"28 stab wounds, you didn't want to leave him a chance, huh?" He yelled at the deviant. "Did you feel anger? Hate?"
The way he talked to it brought memories back to (Y/N)'s mind, memories she wanted to forget.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She was a teenager, being pulled by her father into her room.
"How dare you sneak out of the house? You were told to stay here & study. When you're given an order by me you obey!" He talked to her as if she were an android dis-obeying a command. He pushed her into her bedroom.
"Listen miss, if it weren't for your mother, you'd be out of this house right now, you hear me? Out. All these fantasias of becoming a police officer will corrupt you. But no, your mother says it's fine to dream about those jobs, jobs that can get you killed."
"Any other job has the same likelihood of me dying! I was just watching some officers do a patrol, at least I wasn't out drinking or getting high or smoking! If I become a lawyer & I don't watch my tongue god knows what people are going to think!
If I'm on the force I can make a difference! I have goals & I will accomplish them! That includes becoming a detective no matter what you say! I control my own life! I don't need your godamn 'life advice'!" She yelled that last part extremely loud. She immediately regretted it.
"Wait, dad, I- "
He looked down at her, eyes flaming with anger. He opened his mouth to spit more venom at her.
"What is going on up there?"
Her mother's voice called from downstairs, & then everything faded away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She was tapped on the shoulder & flinched.
"You alright kid?" Hank kept hold of her shoulder.
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"If you need to- "
"I'm good now, I promise."
Taking a moment to collect herself as Hank stepped back to his chair, she watched the RK800 walk around the deviant who was shaking.
"He was bleeding, begging you for mercy, but you stabbed him, again & again & again!"
"Please," It stuttered. "Please leave me alone."
"Alright." He sat back down. "Alright, everything is going to be okay."
"We're wasting time." Gavin snarled impatiently.
"Says the one with his head up his ass." (Y/N) murmured.
"What?"
"I said this deviant's being a pain in the ass."
Hank smirked at her comment.
"Good save, kid."
"You're a machine, you were designed to obey," Connor slammed his hand down on the desk. "So obey! Tell me what happened. "
He looked down for a moment, his eyes softening.
He can change his expression at the drop of a hat,
But he feels nothing.
The android opposite him simply stared.
"If you remain silent, there is nothing I can do to help you. They're gonna shut you down for good! You'll be dead! Do you hear me? Dead!"
Another silence as (Y/N) pinched the bridge of her nose.
"He tortured me every day."
She shot her head up.
"Mother of god, he did it." Her eyes widened, he'd actually cracked it.
"I did whatever he told me, but there was always something wrong..."
It glanced away.
"Then one day... He took a bat & started hitting me...For the first time I felt..."
"Scared." (Y/N) mumbled in unison with the deviant, Hank heard the fear in her voice.
"Scared he might destroy me. Scared I might die."
Her lip creased into a line with worry. The Lieutenant remembered when she said those exact words to him a few weeks ago.
"You alright?" He asked.
"Just...remembering something..."
She was remembering those words she'd spoken after that shard of glass got caught in her shoulder. She'd been pushed into the window of a 10 story building during a case, breaking the glass. After doctors checked out her cut, all she could think about was if she fell out that window.
(Y/N) tensed at the last thought, looking back at her banded shoulder. She turned her attention back to Carlos's android.
"So, I- Grabbed a knife & stabbed him in the stomach... I felt better..."
A chill ran down (Y/N)'s spine.
"So, I stabbed him again & again!... Until he collapsed..."
God, this is not what I expected at 12:40 In the morning.
"There was blood everywhere."
"Why did you write 'I AM ALIVE' on the wall?"
"He used to tell I was nothing. That I was just a piece of plastic... I had to write it. To tell him he was wrong..."
They just want equal rights.
To be treated like humanity.
"The sculpture in the bathroom, you made it, right? What does it represent?"
"It's an offering... An offering so I'll be saved."
"rA9. It was written on the bathroom wall. What does it mean?"
"The day shall come when we will no longer be slaves... No more threats. No more humiliation. We will. Be. The masters."
They want to be free.
Free to live.
Free to laugh.
Free to love whoever they want.
"The sculpture was an offering, an offering to whom?"
"To rA9."
Who is this rA9?
"Only rA9 can save us."
Sounds like some sort of robot Jesus to me.
"When did you start feeling emotions?"
"Before he used to beat me & I never said anything. But one day I realised it wasn't...
fair!
I felt anger.
Hatred.
And then I knew what I had to do."
"Why did you hide in the attic? Instead of running away?"
"I didn't know what to do. For the first time there was no-one there to tell me. I was scared... So, I hid."
Connor turned towards the glass, his expression now falling bland.
"I'm done."
He got out of the chair, still facing the deviant. Reed, Hank (Y/N) & Chris came into the room as he opened the door.
"Chris lock it up." Gavin sounded completely done with this case.
Chris came up to the android.
"Alright, let's go."
"Leave me alone! Don't touch me." It was struggling, (Y/N) honestly felt sorry for it.
"What the fuck are you doing? Move it!"
"You shouldn't touch it." She realised how close she was standing to the RK800 who'd just spoken.
"It'll self-destruct if it feels threatened."
"Stay out of this, got it? No fuckin' android is gonna tell me what to do."
"But a human will. Gavin, don't touch it, the poor thing's under enough stress already."
"Poor thing? Please (Y/N) you feel sympathy for this bag of bolts?"
She didn't answer, her eyes darting to the ground for a brief moment.
"You don't understand. If it self-destructs we won't get anything out of it!"
"I told you to shut your fucking mouth!"
"Reed sit your ass down now."
"Mind yours, (L/N). Chris, gonna move this asshole or what?"
"I'm trying."
At the exact same time Connor & (Y/N) moved towards the deviant, both pulling it from Chris' hold.
"I can't let you do that! Leave it alone, now!"
"I warned you motherfucker!" Reed pressed a gun to Connor's head.
"Reed!"
"That's enough."
"Mind your own business Hank."
"I said," He pulled out his own gun. "that's enough."
It was as if time froze, all the alternates linked the timelines together as 2 guns could decide an android's life & a deviant's death.
Reed's eyes darted to Connor, then to (Y/N) & finally to Hank. He lowered his firearm.
"-Fuck."
He pointed an accusing finger at (Y/N).
"You're not gonna get away with it this time."
Eat shit Gavin
He stared at Connor for a brief moment before storming towards the door, barging (Y/N) in the shoulder on his way past.
"Fuck!"
She turned towards the deviant, softening her stare & calming herself down. She lowered her body to the floor so the machine could look her in the eye.
"You're okay now, he's gone & nobody's going to hurt you, alright? It's over now." She spoke in a hushed tone.
That seemed to do the trick since it then calmed down & nodded, she could see the detective android behind her watching her every move as she got up. He turned to Chris.
"Please, don't touch it. Let it follow you out of the room & it won't cause any trouble."
It slowly got up, walking past the detectives – machine & human – before muttering something in their direction.
"The truth is inside."
